For a startup failure, first verify YouTube’s current RTMPS server URL, stream key and encoder support. For a later drop, use OBS logs, dropped-frame status and YouTube stream health to investigate upload stability, Windows software and the network path. The reviewed official guidance does not identify a special timeout rule for overnight playlists.
First identify when the timeout happens
People often call this an “RTMP timeout,” but YouTube recommends RTMPS, and a connection failure can also come from the network or encoder. Record the exact error and whether it appears before the stream starts or after it has been running.
- At startup: An error such as “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” points first to the configured server URL, protocol, stream key or the encoder’s RTMPS support.
- After startup: If OBS is disconnecting and reconnecting, inspect dropped frames, OBS status and logs, and YouTube’s stream health. Network instability or a bitrate beyond the connection’s reliable capacity can cause later drops.
Before changing settings, preserve the OBS log and note whether YouTube’s Live Control Room reports incoming data, an encoder error or a stream-health warning. That evidence helps distinguish a connection problem from a source or encoding problem.
Fix a timeout before the stream connects
Check YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and go to Stream settings.
- Reveal and copy the current RTMPS URL and stream key into your encoder. Do not assume a saved URL or key is still current.
- Confirm the server uses
rtmps, notrtmp, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s guidance says: “Both the protocol and the server should be rtmps, not just rtmp.” See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS. - If an SSL error persists despite a correct URL, YouTube suggests specifying port 443. Check the current YouTube instructions and your encoder’s fields before changing the endpoint.
Use the values shown for the active stream in Live Control Room rather than copying an endpoint from an old setup or another event. For protocol details, see Google for Developers’ Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Update and inspect the encoder
YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version. Check that OBS’s preview shows the intended source and playlist, look for encoder errors, and inspect CPU load. If you make a local recording, use it to check whether the source and encoding look and sound right. These checks help separate a source or performance issue from a failure to reach YouTube.
Fix a stream that starts and later disconnects
Check dropped frames and the network connection
OBS says intermittent disconnections and dropped frames usually indicate an unstable connection between the computer and ingest server, or a bitrate above what the connection can reliably sustain. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, choosing a suitable quality, and running a representative preflight while monitoring stream health. A headline speed-test result is only a starting point; it does not establish that upload capacity will remain stable throughout an overnight run.

For H.264, YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations include these configurations. They are encoder-setting recommendations, not statistics about connection reliability or guarantees against a drop.

Use the row that matches the actual resolution and frame rate, and allow headroom for network variation. YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when selecting bitrate. That is a general OBS rule of thumb, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of overnight stability. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published 2024-09-30, explains that too many dropped frames can lead to disconnection.
Test OBS network options one at a time
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Test Network Optimizations and TCP pacing. Keep a note of each change so you can tell which setting affects the result.
- Leave Bind to IP set to Default.
- If needed, test IPv4-only. If it does not help, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting, as OBS advises.
- Dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate during congestion, which may help preserve the connection, but it does not fix the underlying network problem and can reduce image quality.
Check Windows software, hardware and Wi-Fi
- VPNs, firewall or antivirus software, network “optimization” utilities and outdated network drivers can interfere with streaming. If you have evidence pointing to security software, test it temporarily and restore protection afterward; add an OBS exception only if the test supports that fix.
- If the PC uses Wi-Fi, try wired Ethernet. OBS describes Wi-Fi as potentially unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection; it does not specify a required cable type.
- Restart the modem or router and inspect the physical path, including cables, network cards, routers, switches and extenders.
- If the outbound connection remains unreliable after local checks, contact your ISP. YouTube’s Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream guidance also covers encoder, connection and ISP checks.
Rehearse before leaving the playlist unattended
Run a representative test with the same playlist, encoder, output settings and network path you intend to use overnight. Confirm in YouTube Studio that the intended stream event is configured correctly, including its auto-start and auto-stop behavior. Check stream health during the test and have a way to monitor or receive alerts while the real stream runs.

The cited YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish a special timeout caused by an overnight playlist or promise that a setting prevents every long-run disconnect. Treat a successful short test as useful evidence, not proof that the connection cannot fail later.
