How to Stream a Prerecorded Video to YouTube—and When to Use a Premiere

YouTube Premieres and FFmpeg encoder streams are different workflows. Here’s how to schedule a true Premiere or send a prerecorded file as a live stream.

To create a true YouTube Premiere, upload the finished video in YouTube Studio, schedule it, and select Set as Premiere. FFmpeg cannot create that upload-based Premiere; it can instead send the video as a real-time encoder feed for a YouTube live stream. Choose the Premiere workflow for a scheduled watch page and shared viewing experience, or the FFmpeg workflow when you specifically need an encoder-originated live stream.

Premiere or live stream: choose the right workflow

Workflow Use it when What you do Key limitation
Uploaded-video Premiere You want YouTube’s scheduled Premiere page and shared viewing experience. Upload the video in Studio, schedule it, and select Set as Premiere. YouTube’s Premiere guidance says Shorts, 360/VR180 videos, and output above 1080p are unsupported. YouTube: Create a Premiere
FFmpeg encoder live stream You want the prerecorded file sent to YouTube as a live encoder feed. Set up an encoder event in Live Control Room, then send the file using its stream URL and key. This is a live stream, not the uploaded-video Premiere feature; test the local FFmpeg build and event setup. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder

These are separate YouTube workflows. A live stream may play a prerecorded source, but it does not become a true Premiere just because the source is a finished video.

How to schedule a true YouTube Premiere

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and upload the finished video.
  2. Enter the video details and proceed to the visibility and scheduling options.
  3. Choose Schedule, set the date and time, and select Set as Premiere.
  4. Share the resulting watch page so viewers can set reminders and join the live chat when the Premiere begins.
  5. Check YouTube’s current Premiere format limits before scheduling: Shorts, 360/VR180 videos, and output above 1080p are not supported according to YouTube’s Premiere help page.

FFmpeg is not needed during this Premiere. If this scheduled upload is what you meant by “YouTube Premiere,” use this method rather than an encoder command.

How to send a prerecorded file as an FFmpeg live stream

1. Create an encoder event and get its credentials

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented in its live-stream setup guide.
  2. Copy the event’s Stream URL and Stream key from Live Control Room. The key authorizes an encoder to send the feed; treat it like a password. If it is exposed, YouTube documents how to reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
  3. Use the RTMPS URL provided for that event when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP; do not substitute a guessed endpoint or reuse credentials from an unrelated event. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

2. Run FFmpeg with the event’s URL and key

Replace the input filename and the destination with the values from your own Live Control Room. Keep the real key out of public screenshots, logs, and shared shell history.

ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

This is a starting template, not a command verified for every FFmpeg build, input file, or YouTube event. FFmpeg documents -re as reading at the input’s native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which lets output proceed in real time rather than racing through the file. Its documentation includes real-time RTMP examples using -re, H.264, AAC, and FLV. See FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg protocol documentation.

The example uses H.264 video and AAC audio in an FLV container as a broadly applicable starting point. YouTube’s current encoder guidance also lists HEVC and AV1 video options; use them only if your installed FFmpeg supports the codec and the selected ingest mode accepts it. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before changing codecs.

3. Check the preview, then launch from Live Control Room

  1. Start FFmpeg early enough to establish the connection and inspect the incoming preview.
  2. In Live Control Room, check that both picture and sound are present.
  3. Click Go live when ready. Starting FFmpeg supplies the feed; it does not replace the Live Control Room launch step in YouTube’s scheduled encoder workflow. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
  4. Monitor the stream’s audio, video, and health during the event. YouTube recommends testing beforehand and checking the preview before going live. See YouTube: Create a live stream on mobile or webcam.
  5. When finished, end the event through YouTube’s controls and stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

Settings that affect the stream

Use YouTube’s current encoder table for the exact resolution, frame rate, and bitrate combination you intend to send; do not copy a high bitrate without checking the source and the upload connection. YouTube’s guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings because supported settings can change.

  • Match output to the source: Select a resolution and frame rate the video can actually provide. Set bitrate according to YouTube’s current table for that output.
  • Use a stable connection: The upload connection must sustain the outgoing stream. YouTube recommends testing and checking stream health rather than assuming the connection is adequate. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
  • Keep event credentials private: The URL and key belong to the specific event. Reset an exposed key through Live Control Room; do not put a real key into a reusable example. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
  • Check codecs in your installation: Not every FFmpeg build necessarily includes libx264. The available encoder depends on the build installed on your system, so check its encoders and test the exact command and source before the event.

Troubleshooting

FFmpeg connects, but YouTube shows no preview

Confirm that the destination uses the Stream URL and key from this event, that the event is open for an encoder feed, and that FFmpeg has not exited with an error. Wait for the preview and inspect Live Control Room before selecting Go live.

The command reports that an encoder is unavailable

Your local FFmpeg build may not include libx264. Check the encoders available in that installation and use a codec supported by both the build and the selected YouTube ingest settings. Test the exact source and command before the scheduled event.

The picture or sound is missing

Check the source file’s streams and confirm the command can decode them. Inspect the incoming preview for both image and audio before launching; if you change mapping or encoding options, test again with the same file and event type.

The stream stutters or drops

Check Live Control Room’s stream health and whether the upload connection can sustain the selected output bitrate. Revisit YouTube’s current encoder settings for the resolution and frame rate, then run another test. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than relying on a setting copied from another creator. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.

The event plays too quickly or ends before the scheduled duration

Make sure the command includes -re before the input. FFmpeg defines it as reading at native frame rate for real-time output. Without real-time pacing, a file can be read faster than its intended playback duration. See FFmpeg documentation.

Copyright and channel eligibility still apply

Using FFmpeg does not change YouTube’s rules for the content you broadcast or the channel that broadcasts it. Make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization policies before scheduling. A prerecorded file being sent through an encoder is still content published on YouTube; the workflow alone does not establish that it is eligible for monetization.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo is for prerecorded video streams to YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
