To reduce downtime, restore the connection, check OBS, and verify the live event in YouTube Studio; for recurring interruptions, address the specific failure point rather than assuming the stream will resume by itself.
What a router reboot interrupts
An encoder sends video to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. Those settings identify the connection; they do not keep it available when the router is offline. YouTube’s encoder guide explains how an encoder connects to a live stream.
When the router reboots, the encoder loses its route to YouTube. Once the network returns, OBS or another encoder may reconnect, but neither YouTube’s setup guidance nor OBS’s troubleshooting material guarantees that every 24/7 broadcast will resume automatically after every reboot. The router being back online is not proof that the public live event is active.
Recover the stream after connectivity returns
- Wait for the router to finish restarting. Confirm the streaming computer is connected and can reach the internet. If the computer is on Wi-Fi, reconnect it if needed.
- Check the encoder. In OBS, inspect its connection status and logs. OBS lists network instability and modem/router or other network hardware among possible causes of connection trouble, and recommends a wired connection for streaming. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
- Check the live event in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and inspect the event’s state and whether YouTube is receiving data. The event may still be live, waiting for data, or ended; the encoder and event status both matter. YouTube’s workflow is described in its encoder guide and live stream settings help.
- Reconnect or start the encoder if necessary. Use the encoder’s reconnect/start workflow, then confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed. Do not reset the stream key just because the router rebooted: YouTube documents key resets for key-specific problems, not as a routine network-recovery step (Manage live stream settings).
- Confirm the public playback. Once the control room shows incoming video and the event is live, check the viewer-facing stream. For a long-running channel, test this sequence during a planned maintenance window and record what the router, ISP connection, encoder, and event actually do. Recovery time and behavior depend on that setup.
Reduce the chance or impact of another interruption
Use Ethernet for the encoder computer
A wired connection can remove Wi-Fi instability between the computer and router. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming, but Ethernet does not prevent a router reboot or fix an ISP outage.

Identify which part of the connection is failing
Before buying equipment or changing settings, determine whether the interruption comes from local Wi-Fi, the WAN/ISP connection, router power, or the router itself. A backup only helps if it covers the failed part and the encoder/session recovers through the change. Compatibility and behavior depend on the router model, firmware, ISP, and stream configuration.
Consider dual-WAN only for WAN failures
Some routers can switch to a configured secondary WAN when their detection system identifies a primary-WAN failure. ASUS documents this behavior for supported configurations in its Dual WAN auto network detection guide (last updated June 2, 2025; model and firmware support vary). That does not establish continuity when the router doing the failover itself reboots.

Know what disconnect protection and RTMPS do
Restream’s disconnect protection can show configured fallback video to viewers during an encoder disconnect, but its availability is limited to certain plans and terms can change. It does not restore your local router or keep the encoder’s originating link online; check Restream’s setup and plan details.
RTMPS encrypts the encoder-to-YouTube connection using TLS/SSL, as YouTube explains in its RTMPS guidance. Encryption protects the connection; it does not prevent downtime.

A UPS is relevant only if a power interruption is causing the reboot and the router and necessary equipment are actually powered by the backup. It cannot prevent a deliberate or software-initiated reboot or an ISP outage. Without knowing the cause, router model, and equipment, there is no basis for recommending a particular backup device or replacement router.

If your 24/7 stream uses uploaded or prerecorded video, a cloud service can originate the stream without relying on a home computer and router. This is a different approach from repairing the local connection: YouTube’s encoder guidance includes cloud services for 24/7 prerecorded streaming, but that does not mean a cloud service fixes a router or ISP fault.
