1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo inspect an RTMP stream locally, run a local RTMP server, publish to it from your encoder, then open the server’s stream URL in a separate player. This lets you check the encoder-to-server path and inspect the picture, movement, and sound before configuring YouTube. It does not test your internet upload or prove that YouTube will ingest the stream successfully.
What a local RTMP test checks
A local server creates a private inspection point between your encoder and the eventual streaming destination. You can verify that the encoder publishes to the expected path and that a separate client can read the result. For a useful test, inspect both video and audio, composition, motion, continuity, and sound level.
MediaMTX is a ready-to-use media server and proxy with documented workflows for publishing from OBS or FFmpeg and reading with clients such as VLC, FFmpeg, and GStreamer. Its documentation covers Windows, macOS, and Linux; installation commands and firewall details depend on your operating system and software version. See the MediaMTX introduction.
Test the actual OBS output
- Start MediaMTX. Install and run it on the same computer as OBS, or on another machine reachable on your local network. Keep the test on a private network rather than exposing the server publicly.
- Point OBS at the local server. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose Custom… for the service, enter
rtmp://localhost/mystreamas the server, and leave the stream key empty. This is the local configuration in MediaMTX’s OBS instructions; use the path that matches your server configuration if you change it. - Start streaming from OBS. Use the scene and encoder settings you intend to use for the event, including representative audio and movement. The local test is most useful when it exercises the setup you actually plan to send.
- Open the stream in a separate reader. On the same computer, use
rtmp://localhost/mystream. On another device on the LAN, use the server computer’s reachable local address in place oflocalhost. MediaMTX documents RTMP readers including VLC, FFmpeg, and GStreamer in its RTMP client guide. - Inspect the result. Confirm that video appears, movement is smooth enough for the intended material, framing and overlays are correct, and audio is present at an appropriate level. Listen for missing channels, clipping, silence, or unintended noise.
Use FFmpeg to test the server with a file
If you first want to check the local server and reader without setting up an OBS scene, publish a suitable local video file with FFmpeg. MediaMTX documents this example:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream
Replace file.mp4 with the path to your file. The command loops it and publishes it as an RTMP stream; ensure the destination path and port match your MediaMTX configuration. Open the corresponding RTMP URL in a reader. This method checks the server/reader chain with that file, but it does not exercise OBS’s scene, capture devices, or encoder configuration. See MediaMTX’s FFmpeg publishing instructions.

Choose the test that answers your question
| Method | What it exercises | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Publish from OBS | The actual OBS scene and its local publishing configuration, as well as the server and reader. | You want to inspect the output you plan to send to YouTube. |
| Publish a file with FFmpeg | The local server and reader using a known input file; it does not test OBS. | You want to isolate initial server or playback setup. |
For viewing, VLC provides a visual playback check. FFmpeg can also read the stream in command-line workflows and save a copied sample for review; GStreamer is another documented reader. These are task-based choices, not a measured ranking. MediaMTX shows reader examples at Read with RTMP clients.
Check YouTube settings separately
When you move from a local test to YouTube, follow the current encoder guidance and the destination details shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The page says the ordinary Live Control Room workflow detects encoder settings automatically. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current details; the page has no stated publication date, and its settings may change.

Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single suitable figure for every stream. YouTube’s current table gives these H.264 recommendations and minimums:
| Video mode | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps, H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations for the specified modes, not universal minimums for every codec or stream. Check the current table before going live.

Test the YouTube path before an event
A successful local playback proves only that the local publishing and reading chain worked. It does not measure your internet upload route or establish that YouTube’s ingest is healthy. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, checking upload capacity with a speed test, doing a representative test before the event, and monitoring stream health while live. Its guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
When configuring a forward to YouTube, use the current destination URL and RTMPS details displayed in Live Control Room rather than copying an endpoint from an old example. MediaMTX notes that its documented YouTube URL was current when checked, and that the documented YouTube forwarding setup requires both an audio and a video track. See MediaMTX’s forwarding documentation. Keep your YouTube stream key private; the local OBS example uses an empty key, and YouTube credentials belong in the separate destination configuration.

Troubleshooting a local RTMP check
- The reader cannot connect: Confirm MediaMTX is running, the server and reader use the same path, and the selected port is available. If the reader is on another device, use the server’s LAN address rather than
localhost; check local firewall rules for the configured port. - OBS will not publish: Recheck the custom server URL and path, and ensure the local service is listening. For the documented MediaMTX setup, the OBS stream key is empty; do not substitute your YouTube key for the local test.
- Video appears but audio does not: Check OBS’s audio source, mixer levels, and track selection, then test again with audible material. A local reader can reveal missing audio before you try a YouTube forward; MediaMTX’s documented YouTube forwarding setup expects both audio and video.
- The FFmpeg sample fails: Verify that the input file path is valid, FFmpeg can read the file, and the RTMP port and path match the running server configuration. The sample command’s
1935port andmystreampath must correspond to your setup. - The local test works but YouTube reports problems: The local route does not include public internet upload or YouTube ingest. Recheck the current RTMPS destination and encoder settings, test upload capacity, run an event-like destination test, and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to loop continuously, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a local inspection server: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and does not replace a local preview when you need to inspect an encoder before sending it to YouTube.
