In OBS, enable Automatically Reconnect, then set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. OBS increases the wait between attempts by doubling the retry time, so the delay is not a promise that every attempt will happen at the same interval. A retry count of zero disables reconnecting. There is no documented universal best value: choose a delay and retry limit that fit the interruptions you expect and how long you want OBS to keep trying.
Configure OBS to reconnect
- In OBS, open the reconnect settings. Turn on Automatically Reconnect.
- Set Retry Delay to the initial wait before retry behavior and set Maximum Retries to the number of attempts OBS should make. The precise panel location can vary by OBS version.
- Choose values based on the likely duration of an outage and how long you want OBS to continue trying. Do not treat Retry Delay as a fixed interval: OBS documents that retry time doubles on each attempt. Setting the retry count to zero disables reconnecting.
- Once configured, verify that the stream is live in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
These settings control OBS’s attempts to reconnect to its streaming service. They do not guarantee that YouTube will keep a particular broadcast available or recover it after every outage.
Check YouTube’s broadcast settings separately
OBS reconnect controls and YouTube broadcast lifecycle controls do different jobs. YouTube stream keys tell the encoder where to send its feed, while the broadcast’s Auto-start and Auto-stop options govern whether the encoder can start or stop that broadcast. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
For a scheduled broadcast
If OBS stops sending and you want it to resume the existing scheduled broadcast, do not end the event. Also review whether Auto-stop should be off: an OBS-published YouTube streaming guide warns that Auto-stop prevents reconnecting to continue the broadcast after the encoder stops. Confirm the event’s status in YouTube Studio after OBS reconnects; the available documentation does not specify a universal reconnect window or guarantee recovery for every event state.

What to expect from the retry settings
- Retry Delay: sets the starting wait for retry behavior, not necessarily the interval for every attempt.
- Maximum Retries: limits how many attempts OBS makes; zero turns reconnecting off.
- Increasing waits: OBS says retry time doubles on each retry to avoid overloading services. The documentation does not prescribe a best starting delay or retry limit for a YouTube playlist stream.
- YouTube event state: a successful OBS reconnection does not itself establish that YouTube will preserve or resume the same broadcast.
OBS’s output reference describes retry behavior, but neither it nor the YouTube guidance establishes a universally correct setting or a guaranteed duration that a broadcast can survive offline.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not resume
- OBS does not try again: check that Automatically Reconnect is enabled and Maximum Retries is not zero.
- OBS keeps waiting between attempts: remember that the retry time doubles on each attempt. Check that the configured retry limit gives OBS enough attempts for the outage you are trying to tolerate.
- OBS reconnects but the broadcast is not live: inspect the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, including Auto-start and Auto-stop, and verify the stream key. OBS’s connection status alone does not confirm the YouTube event is live.
- The scheduled event appears to have ended: do not assume OBS retries can revive an ended event. Check its state in YouTube Studio and create or configure a broadcast as needed; the cited guidance does not establish a universal recovery window.
