Best Low-Cost VPS for a 24/7 YouTube Internet Radio Stream

For a 24/7 YouTube radio stream, choose a VPS by its monthly outbound transfer first. Compare listed plans, size the workload, and follow a practical FFmpeg setup checklist—or run an uploaded-video stream from the cloud.

For a low-cost, self-managed 24/7 YouTube internet radio stream, start with a Linux VPS running FFmpeg and choose the plan by its included outbound transfer—not its headline price. A single audio-led stream with a static image or simple loop needs less compute than a desktop OBS setup, but it still sends video continuously. A plan with too little monthly transfer can become a false economy.

If you would rather not maintain a server, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops from the cloud at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. For a DIY VPS, the examples below are provider listings, not tested rankings or endorsements.

What to compare before choosing a VPS

For an internet-radio stream, the VPS is not just a place to run FFmpeg. It must have enough outbound data allowance for continuous video, enough CPU and memory for the chosen workflow, and a network route that reaches YouTube reliably. You also need to be willing to secure the stream key, configure automatic restarts, and monitor the stream.

  • Outbound transfer: estimate monthly egress at your target bitrate, then compare it with the plan’s included allowance and overage policy.
  • CPU and RAM: a simple static-image FFmpeg loop is lighter than OBS with animated scenes, browser sources, or multiple streams. A VPS guide’s 2026 starting recommendations are 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM for a static FFmpeg loop, 4 vCPU and 8 GB for 720p OBS scenes, and 6 vCPU and 12 GB for 1080p OBS with browser sources. These are that publisher’s suggested starting points, not universal minimums or benchmark results.
  • Location and network: choose a region with a suitable route to YouTube and test the actual stream from that VPS; location alone does not establish performance.
  • Operations: check whether you can use a service manager, access logs, monitor resource use, and recover the process when it stops.
  • Total cost: account for tax, IPv4 charges, and transfer overages where applicable. Provider plan terms can change, so confirm them at checkout.

How much transfer does a 24/7 stream use?

At a constant bitrate, transfer use is predictable. YouTube Help’s published H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. If those bitrates run continuously for 30 days, the video transfer is approximately 1.94 TB and 3.24 TB respectively, in decimal units, before protocol overhead. These are calculations from the bitrate and duration, not figures published by YouTube.

  • 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
Video bitrate Approximate transfer in 30 uninterrupted days Practical implication
6 Mbps About 1.94 TB before protocol overhead A plan capped at 500 GiB is not enough for a continuous stream at this rate.
10 Mbps About 3.24 TB before protocol overhead A 3 TB allowance is below this estimate, before overhead.

Leave room for audio, protocol overhead, restarts, and any other traffic on the VPS. Providers may express allowances in TB or GiB, which are not identical units. If the stream’s bitrate varies, calculate using its sustained average and keep a margin rather than planning to consume the entire quota.

Hostinap USVPS1 Hostinap’s listing, accessed in 2026: $5/month, 2 vCPU, 3 GB ECC RAM, 10 GB SSD, 3 TB transfer, 1 Gbit port. Its listed transfer allowance is above the 1.94 TB estimate for 6 Mbps over 30 days, but below the 3.24 TB estimate for 10 Mbps, before overhead. Confirm current terms at checkout.
Hostinap EUVPS1, Germany Hostinap’s listing, accessed in 2026: $12/month, 1 vCPU, 4 GB ECC RAM, 60 GB NVMe, unmetered traffic, 1 Gbit port. The provider advertises unmetered traffic; verify the applicable terms and suitability for continuous streaming. The listed single vCPU may be a constraint for heavier encoding workloads.
DigitalOcean, as reported in a secondary comparison StreamNeo’s July 2026 comparison reports a $4 plan with 500 GiB transfer and a $12 plan with 2,000 GiB. The reported 500 GiB option is below the 6 Mbps monthly estimate; the 2,000 GiB figure is close to that estimate and does not include overhead. Confirm current details with DigitalOcean.
Amazon Lightsail, as reported in a secondary comparison StreamNeo’s July 2026 comparison reports a $7 Linux bundle with 2 TB transfer. That reported allowance is close to the 6 Mbps estimate and below the 10 Mbps estimate before overhead. Confirm current details with Amazon.
Hetzner CX23, as reported in a secondary comparison StreamNeo’s July 2026 comparison reports €5.49/month in Germany or Finland after a June 2026 price adjustment, excluding IPv4 and VAT. The comparison does not state the included transfer allowance here. Check Hetzner’s current pricing, transfer rules, VAT, and IPv4 charges before comparing it with a transfer-heavy workload.

For a straightforward one-stream setup, Hostinap’s listed US plan is notable for its stated 3 TB transfer allowance at a low listed monthly price, but that does not make it a verified best performer. A static-image FFmpeg loop is a different workload from OBS scenes, and provider specifications do not establish real-world CPU consistency, uptime, or support quality.

Set up a static-image radio stream with FFmpeg

This approach assumes you have a lawful radio audio source accessible from the VPS and a static image to use as the video signal. YouTube Live requires a video signal for this audio-led workflow; a static background image or pre-rendered visual loop can provide it. The requirement is described in a technical how-to, rather than in official YouTube policy text.

  1. Choose the VPS and confirm transfer. Calculate egress for your target bitrate using the estimates above, and check the plan’s current transfer and overage terms.
  2. Prepare the inputs. Put a suitable image on the server and confirm that the audio feed is reachable from it. Use media and artwork you have the rights to stream.
  3. Create a YouTube live event and obtain its stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the stream and copy the stream URL and key shown for that event. Use RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends it. Treat the key as a password; do not paste it into public logs, scripts, or support posts.
  4. Configure FFmpeg for a representative test. Combine the image input with the audio URL, encode the video and audio using YouTube-supported codecs, set constant bitrate (CBR), and use a two-second keyframe interval. Select a resolution and bitrate your VPS can sustain and that match your intended broadcast. YouTube’s published guidance recommends 6 Mbps H.264 for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30; those are recommendations, not mandatory settings for every stream.
  5. Send the feed to YouTube over RTMPS. Use the event’s stream endpoint and key, then check the incoming preview and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Do not treat a running FFmpeg process as proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  6. Run it under a service manager. Configure the process to restart after an unexpected exit, keep logs from growing without limit, and arrange monitoring that alerts you if the process or incoming stream fails. Automatic process restart does not by itself verify that the audio, video, or YouTube connection has recovered.
  7. Test before broadcasting continuously. YouTube Help advises testing before going live with audio and video motion similar to the real stream and monitoring stream health. Check that the audio is audible, the visual signal is present, the bitrate is stable, and the VPS has enough CPU, memory, and transfer headroom.

FFmpeg is generally a better fit for a fixed loop without interactive scenes. OBS can be easier to configure visually, but a headless VPS needs a desktop session and more resources for scenes and browser sources. Treat any provider’s resource suggestions as starting points and validate your own workload.

Reliability, stream keys, and music rights

  • Keep credentials private. A stream key lets software send a broadcast to your channel. Restrict who can read it, avoid exposing it in command histories or logs, and rotate it if you suspect it has been shared.
  • Recover at both layers. A service manager can restart FFmpeg after a process failure, but it cannot establish that YouTube has accepted the feed again. Watch YouTube’s stream health as well as server-side process and network monitoring.
  • Check rights for the music and territory. The cited technical guide warns that Content ID can mute, interrupt, or monetize streams. Confirm rights with relevant rights holders and check licensing rules that apply to your repertoire and territories; the guide is not legal advice.
  • Do not infer provider reliability from plan specifications. Listed CPU, RAM, transfer, and port speeds do not prove uptime, CPU consistency, or support quality. Test a representative stream and assess whether the provider’s recovery and support arrangements fit your needs.

Cost notes: VPS versus cloud-managed streaming

A VPS can have a low monthly sticker price, but the real cost includes any IPv4 or tax charges, transfer overages, storage, and your time configuring and monitoring Linux. A transfer allowance that is too small can make an apparently cheaper plan unsuitable. Compare the complete cost for your bitrate and workflow rather than comparing base prices alone.

Common VPS streaming problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube shows no incoming video Incorrect event endpoint or key, an inaccessible input, or FFmpeg failing before it sends the output. Check the event details, input access, FFmpeg logs, and YouTube’s stream-health panel. Keep the key private while correcting it.
Video arrives but audio is missing The audio feed may be unreachable, silent, or mapped incorrectly in the encoder setup. Test the audio input independently, inspect FFmpeg output, and include real audio in the preflight test.
Stream health is poor or the feed disconnects Network instability, insufficient VPS capacity, or an encoding/output configuration that the server cannot sustain. Check CPU and memory while streaming, inspect network and FFmpeg logs, then test a lower workload or a more suitable plan. Confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming feed.
The process stops and does not return No service-level restart policy, a repeated configuration error, or a host/server failure. Review service-manager status and logs, correct the underlying error, and verify the configured restart behavior with a controlled test.
The broadcast is muted, interrupted, or monetized A rights claim or other music-rights issue may be involved. Review YouTube notices and contact the relevant rights holders or licensing authority for the territories and repertoire involved.
