Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a 480p YouTube live stream at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 4 Mbps with H.264 or 3 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Aim for about 20% more stable upload capacity than your chosen stream bitrate: that means roughly 5 Mbps available for a 4 Mbps H.264 stream, before other network traffic. For a looping video, OBS can repeat a single file with its Media Source’s Loop option.
Recommended bitrate and minimums for 480p
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists the following rates for 480p at 30 fps. These are encoder-to-YouTube ingestion bitrates, not guaranteed viewer playback rates.
| Codec | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
The minimum is a published encoder setting, not a promise of acceptable picture quality or a stable stream on a weak connection. If your connection cannot sustain the recommended rate, test a lower rate before relying on it for a long broadcast and assess the actual result.
How much upload speed you need
Use measured upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube advises leaving about 20% upload headroom. Applying that margin to the 4 Mbps H.264 recommendation gives roughly 5 Mbps of available upload capacity for the stream. Other devices, applications, or a backup stream need additional capacity, so the connection’s total upload must be higher if they are active.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a 3 Mbps AV1 or H.265 stream, the same 20% margin implies about 3.75 Mbps available for that stream. Treat these as planning figures, not guarantees: upload performance can fluctuate, and the cited guidance does not promise a particular visual result at a given minimum bitrate.
Encoder settings for a stable 480p stream
- Resolution and frame rate: Set 480p at 30 fps; YouTube’s cited 480p bitrate row is specifically for 30 fps.
- Codec and bitrate: Match the bitrate to the codec in use: 4 Mbps recommended for H.264, or 3 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
- Rate control: Use CBR.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Connection: Use RTMPS for YouTube Live, as YouTube recommends.
- Latency: Normal latency is a sensible starting point for a passive loop. Lower latency matters less when viewers are not interacting, and YouTube warns it can lead to more playback buffering.
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers. Your encoder bitrate is the rate sent to YouTube; it does not mean every viewer receives a 480p rendition at that exact bitrate.

Loop a video in OBS
Repeat one video file
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
- Select the video file you want to broadcast.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source settings, then apply the settings.
Repeat a playlist
For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS documents this option as enabled by default; the VLC Video source requires VLC.
Test before going live
- Check that stable upload capacity has the headroom for your selected bitrate and other network use.
- Test with audio and movement similar to what the broadcast will contain, rather than checking a static frame alone.
- Start a test stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube Help says to test before starting the live stream and to keep an eye on stream health.
- If the stream drops frames, buffers, or appears unstable, check competing network traffic and repeat the test. Lower the bitrate only if necessary, then judge the picture in the actual stream rather than assuming the minimum will look good.
Common problems and fixes
- Stream health warns about bitrate or connection: Confirm you are measuring upload, not download; check whether other traffic is using the connection; preserve the recommended headroom; and test again.
- The picture looks poor at the published minimum: Minimum values are not quality guarantees. Test the recommended rate if your upload supports it, or compare lower settings in a test stream before choosing one.
- The video stops instead of repeating: Confirm Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source and ensure VLC is available.
- Viewers experience buffering despite a healthy encoder setting: The creator’s ingestion bitrate is not the same as each viewer’s playback rendition. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream, and lower latency can increase buffering; use normal latency for a non-interactive loop.
Archive limit for long loops
YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a stream running longer than 12 hours will be archived, so do not rely on an archive for a longer loop.
