In OBS Studio, add an ordered set of audio or video files with the VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, and keep the source active in your live scene. That repeats the playlist, but OBS does not document gapless transitions between separate files. If uninterrupted audio at track boundaries matters, prepare and audition the program as one continuous file, then test its end-to-start loop before broadcasting.
Choose the right OBS playback method

OBS’s VLC Video source documentation describes playlist support and Loop Playlist. Its media sources documentation covers Media Source and its single-file loop control. The two approaches are playback choices, not different levels of guaranteed stream reliability.
Set up a repeating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC before configuring OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS after installation if VLC Video is not available as a source.
- Create or select the live scene. Add a source using Sources → + → VLC Video.
- Add your files in the intended order. Check the list from top to bottom; leave shuffle off if the station needs a fixed sequence.
- Enable Loop Playlist. This tells the source to restart after it runs out of media files; it does not add a crossfade.
- Keep the source active. If you use multiple scenes, inspect the source’s visibility behavior. OBS documents options to continue, pause, or stop playback when a source is not visible. Choose the behavior that fits your scene changes.
- Test before going live. Play the complete playlist locally, listen at every track boundary, and wait for the final file to return to the first. Adjust the show or playlist if you hear a break.
OBS’s documented controls support repeating a playlist, not a promise of sample-accurate transitions or recovery if the playback computer, source, or internet connection fails.
What “without gaps” means in practice
Looping and gapless playback are different problems. Loop Playlist restarts the source when the playlist has run out of media. It is not documented as a crossfade or a guarantee that separate files will meet without silence. If you need continuous sound, a practical option is to assemble the program into one continuous audio or video file with suitable editing or playout software. This is an operational recommendation, not an OBS guarantee: listen through internal edits and the end-to-start loop point before using it on air.

Also distinguish playback gaps from a broadcast disconnect. Repeating media does not ensure that YouTube stays connected if the computer or network fails. The setup above does not provide documented failover for those outages.
Do not use HLS settings to fix song boundaries
HLS is an encoder-to-YouTube delivery method, not a track-editing feature. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP because it sends media in segments. Its HLS setup instructions specify a 1–4 second segment duration and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; the HLS ingestion guide describes segment and playlist requirements. Those settings concern how the encoder sends media, not whether adjacent songs sound continuous. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output, but changing ingestion protocol does not remove gaps already present in the program.

Clear the music rights before broadcasting
You are responsible for having the rights needed to broadcast every track, including applicable music rights. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content and may be interrupted or terminated if identified material remains. For licensed music, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID to avoid interruptions. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and Terms of Service.
- A track being online or marked “free” does not by itself establish permission for a live radio stream. Check the license for your specific use.
- YouTube says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content, so it is not a general live-stream music clearance.
- YouTube’s copyright-safe music guidance points to public-domain works or music used with permission and advises checking the terms for the intended use.
Troubleshoot common problems
