Keep your encoder connected to YouTube and change the media playlist inside OBS. The stream key and server URL connect OBS to YouTube; an OBS VLC Video source holds the list of files. Do not stop the encoder output to make an ordinary playlist change. Preview the result and monitor audio and video, since neither YouTube nor OBS promises that editing a live playlist will be gap-free.
What “playlist” means here
This guide concerns the list of media files an encoder plays during a YouTube livestream—not a playlist on YouTube, and not YouTube’s HLS ingest playlist. In OBS, the playlist lives in a VLC Video source. VLC must be installed for that source to be available. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
The YouTube connection is a separate layer: OBS sends its feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key. YouTube says to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream, so keep the existing encoder output running while changing the media source. [YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder]
Replace the playlist without ending the stream
- Keep the current YouTube stream and encoder connection in place. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, leave the current stream running. Do not reset or replace the stream key for a routine change to the files being played. The key and server URL direct the encoder feed to YouTube; they are not the media playlist. [YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder]
- Use a VLC Video source in OBS for multiple files. If one is not already in the scene, add a VLC Video source and select the media files for its playlist. Install VLC first if OBS does not show the source. OBS documents playlist support for VLC Video; its ordinary Media Source is for an individual file. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
- Edit the source’s playlist while OBS continues streaming. Open the VLC Video source properties and change the playlist items there. Keep the encoder output active throughout. OBS documents playlist and playback controls, but does not specify a guaranteed live-edit sequence or whether the current item will restart when the list changes; behavior may depend on how the source is edited and the software version. Do not promise a seamless transition.
- Check the program output and YouTube preview. Confirm the intended video appears, then listen for audio and watch for freezes, black frames, or unexpected playback. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream audio and video quality. [YouTube Help: Tips to improve your live stream]
- Keep monitoring after the edit. Do not leave the stream unattended until you have confirmed that both picture and sound are correct. YouTube’s general monitoring guidance does not constitute a promise about the behavior of a particular OBS playlist edit. [YouTube Help: Tips to improve your live stream]
Choose the right OBS source
| Need | OBS source | Relevant behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one video file | Media Source | Its Loop option repeats that file after playback. |
| Play several files in order or shuffle them | VLC Video | Supports a media playlist, loop and shuffle controls, and visibility behavior settings; requires VLC installed. |
OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated 2022-01-11, lists Media Source video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. It describes VLC Video’s Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default, along with options for what happens when the source is not visible. Defaults and supported formats can vary with software changes, so verify them in the installed OBS version if they matter to your setup. [OBS Project: Media Sources]

Do not confuse an OBS playlist with YouTube HLS
YouTube’s HLS playlist is part of the ingest protocol: it describes video segments sent to YouTube, not the sequence of program videos in OBS. YouTube’s HLS requirements include TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. These are protocol-side requirements, not OBS media-queue settings. [YouTube Live Streaming API: HLS ingestion]
YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers segments rather than a continuous stream, and that HLS is intended for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. This distinction matters only if you are choosing an ingest protocol; it does not determine how to replace a playlist of media files in OBS. HLS also disables the Ultra low-latency option. Protect a long-running program with a local recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a valuable or long-running program, keep a local recording or archive backup rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive. [YouTube Help: Archive live streams]
Troubleshoot the playlist change
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC, then check the source list again. OBS requires VLC for VLC Video support. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
- The live stream ended: Check whether the encoder output was stopped. YouTube says stopping the encoder’s content ends the stream; a playlist change itself is not a reason to stop the output. [YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder]
- The new playlist appears blank, frozen, or out of order: Inspect the VLC Video source’s playlist and playback settings, then check OBS program output and the YouTube preview. The official OBS documentation does not specify how every live edit affects the currently playing item, so verify the actual output rather than assuming a particular restart or transition.
- There is no audio or the picture is wrong: Monitor both in OBS and in YouTube’s preview after the change. YouTube advises checking stream audio and video quality. [YouTube Help: Tips to improve your live stream]
- The archive is missing: Check stream duration. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, making a local recording important for long programs. [YouTube Help: Archive live streams]
