To change which prerecorded video plays at a specific time while your YouTube broadcast stays live, schedule the change in your playout system—not in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s scheduled-stream feature sets an upcoming broadcast and watch page; an encoder or cloud playout service supplies the video feed. OBS can loop or shuffle a playlist, but its official documentation does not establish a built-in clock-time scheduler for selecting a particular video.
First decide what you mean by “schedule”
- Set a future broadcast start time: Create a scheduled stream in YouTube Studio, then connect an encoder to send the feed.
- Rotate videos in sequence: Configure a playlist in the playout software to play items in order or shuffle them, and loop if needed.
- Switch at a specific time: For example, play video A at 9 a.m. and video B at noon without ending the broadcast. That requires a clock-time scheduling or automation layer in the playout system. YouTube Studio’s scheduled broadcast feature does not schedule those changes inside an already-running feed.
These are separate tasks: YouTube manages the broadcast and its audience-facing watch page; the encoder or playout system determines what viewers see.
Schedule an upcoming broadcast in YouTube Studio
If the broadcast itself should begin later, use YouTube Studio to create the scheduled stream. YouTube’s encoder guide explains that the encoder still has to send the feed: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Open Manage, then choose Schedule Stream.
- Create a new stream or reuse settings, then set the upcoming broadcast details.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s live control room into your encoder.
- Connect the encoder and confirm that the preview shows the intended video and audio before the scheduled start.
YouTube supports auto-start and auto-stop settings; when enabled, these can allow the encoder to start or stop the broadcast. Scheduled streams also give viewers an upcoming watch page and the option to set reminders. This schedules the broadcast, not a particular video change within its feed.

Use OBS for a playlist or a single video
OBS can provide the outgoing program from media files, but a playlist and a timed schedule are different capabilities. OBS’s official documentation describes media playback and playlist controls; it does not establish native clock-time selection of a particular playlist item or scheduled scene changes.
Play one media file
Add a Media Source to a scene and select the file you want to play. This is suitable when the scene should show one video. To change the video at a particular time while keeping the broadcast live, you need a separate, verified scheduling or automation method to change the source or scene.
Rotate or loop a playlist
Add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist. OBS documents loop and shuffle controls, so you can play a repeating ordered sequence or a shuffled rotation. A playlist does not, by itself, establish that a particular item will begin at a specified clock time.

Send the OBS program to YouTube
Connect OBS to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s live control room. Check the YouTube preview before going live, and verify that the intended scene, video, and audio reach the feed. OBS composes scenes and sources into the program sent by the encoder; YouTube receives that program rather than selecting the playlist content.

For exact clock-time video changes, add a scheduling layer
If your requirement is “show this documentary at 9 a.m., then switch to another at noon,” identify a playout or automation system that can trigger the required source, playlist item, or scene at those times. The official OBS documentation reviewed here does not verify a built-in clock-time scheduler or a specific plugin recipe, so do not assume that a basic OBS playlist will meet that requirement.
- Confirm that the system can select the specific video or scene at the required time—not merely play a sequence or shuffle.
- Check how it handles the transition, playlist end, missed trigger, and restart after a connection interruption.
- Test the schedule against the clock and time zone you intend to use.
- Preview the output and monitor both audio and video before relying on the schedule unattended.
Choose local or cloud playout
| Approach | What it can do | What you must verify or manage |
|---|---|---|
| Local encoder such as OBS | Play media files; OBS’s VLC Video source can use a playlist with loop and shuffle controls. | A computer must run the encoder. A specific clock-time change needs a scheduling method not established by the cited OBS documentation. You are responsible for monitoring and recovery. |
| Cloud playout service | Can keep prerecorded video playout off a home computer. YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre and Upstream as examples of cloud-based tools for 24/7 playout. | Check each provider’s current scheduling capabilities, terms, price, and availability. Those details are not established by YouTube’s guide. Test preview, monitoring, and recovery behavior. |
| StreamNeo | Runs an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos in the cloud; supports looping and playlists, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. | StreamNeo facts provided here do not establish clock-time selection of a specific video. If exact time-of-day switching is essential, confirm the capability before relying on it. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For an always-on YouTube stream built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo keeps playout in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

Test and monitor before leaving a stream unattended
- Preview the outgoing feed in YouTube’s live control room and confirm that the expected video and audio are present.
- Check that the stream is accessible as intended and that scheduled changes occur at the correct time.
- Test recovery behavior if your playout setup offers a way to do so, rather than assuming a dropped connection will resolve itself.
- Monitor audio and video quality. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.”
- Plan for the archive limit: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is a platform threshold, not a recommended duration, and does not establish automatic archiving for longer broadcasts.
Troubleshooting common scheduling problems
The YouTube watch page is scheduled, but the video has not changed
You scheduled the broadcast, not the content within its encoder feed. Set the video change in the playout or automation system, then confirm the encoder is still sending that output.
The playlist plays, but the desired video does not start at the set time
A playlist’s order, loop, or shuffle controls do not establish clock-time selection. Use a playout system with a verified timed trigger, or revise the plan to use a simple sequence if exact timing is not essential.

The scheduled stream starts without the intended feed
Check that the encoder is connected with the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and inspect the live control room preview. Confirm that the intended media source or scene is active.
The feed stops when the local computer is off
A local encoder depends on the computer running. Keep it powered and the encoder connected, or use cloud playout if you need operation independent of a home computer.
The video changes but audio is missing or wrong
Check the media source’s audio routing and monitor the outgoing YouTube preview. Test each scheduled item and transition, not just the first video.

A long broadcast has no automatic archive
YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not assume the same behavior for a longer broadcast; plan how you will preserve any recording you need.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before scheduling prerecorded documentaries or other videos, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream both their video and audio on YouTube. A scheduled broadcast or an always-on loop does not grant those rights. Review YouTube’s applicable policies and permissions for the material you intend to use, and test the final feed before it goes public.
