As an illustrative DigitalOcean calculation, one shared vCPU, 2 GiB of memory and a 25 GiB boot disk costs about $19.95 for a 730-hour month before any bandwidth overage, tax or music-rights costs. At a constant 4 Mbps, the VPS sends about 1.296 TB of data over 30 days. These are calculations from published rates—not a tested minimum configuration or a universal monthly price.
What makes up the monthly cost?
A VPS runs the process that sends one continuous stream to YouTube. The main costs are compute and disk, plus any outbound transfer beyond the provider’s included allowance. Your audience’s playback is a separate delivery path: YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple formats, so the VPS transfer estimate does not multiply with viewer count.
Compute and disk: an illustrative DigitalOcean calculation
DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation, last verified in 2026, lists rates of $0.0158219 per shared vCPU-hour, $0.0040411 per GiB of memory-hour and $0.000137 per GiB of boot-disk-hour. Applying those rates to one shared vCPU, 2 GiB of memory and a 25 GiB disk gives:
- One shared vCPU: $0.0158219 per hour
- 2 GiB memory: 2 Ă— $0.0040411 per hour
- 25 GiB boot disk: 25 Ă— $0.000137 per hour
- Total: about $0.02733 per hour, or about $19.95 for 730 hours
This is arithmetic from published unit prices, not a listed bundle, endorsement or benchmark proving those resources are sufficient. Actual needs depend on whether your setup copies already encoded media or re-encodes it, as well as the codec, resolution and frame rate.

Outbound transfer: check the allowance before estimating overages
DigitalOcean says each Droplet plan has an outbound-transfer allowance pooled at the team level; the included amount depends on the plan. It lists additional outbound transfer at $0.01/GiB. Check the selected plan’s current allowance and billing terms before adding an overage estimate. The transfer rates and prices can change, and taxes, region and currency treatment also affect the bill.

Use the stream’s sustained ingestion bitrate to estimate data sent from the VPS to YouTube:

Bitrate in Mbps Ă— seconds in the month Ă· 8 = megabytes sent. Divide the result by 1,000,000 for decimal terabytes (TB). These figures exclude a small margin for protocol overhead and reconnects.

The 6 Mbps and 10 Mbps recommendations are from YouTube’s encoder guidance for those specific H.264 formats, not universal settings. Choose a bitrate suited to the resolution and visual complexity of your actual stream. A lower bitrate reduces transfer, but calling the lowest number adequate for every stream would be misleading.

Which stream settings affect VPS cost?
The sustained bitrate is the clearest driver of outbound transfer. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds; it recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP.
For compute, the important distinction is whether the VPS simply passes through encoded media or encodes it in software. Re-encoding can add CPU demand, and the workload varies with codec, resolution and frame rate. No specific VPS size has been benchmarked for this workload here, so test the actual stream on the intended instance and watch both server load and YouTube’s stream health before relying on it continuously. YouTube recommends testing the intended audio and motion before going live.

Do you pay for each viewer’s YouTube playback bandwidth?
Not as VPS outbound transfer in this estimate. The VPS uploads the stream to YouTube; YouTube handles delivery and transcoding for viewers. Audience size can matter to your channel in other ways, but it does not turn this one VPS-to-YouTube upload into a separate VPS transfer for every viewer.

Music rights can be a separate, material cost
YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has all necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights involving artists, record labels, publishers (including public-performance licenses) and other royalty participants. This is YouTube’s contractual language, not legal advice for every jurisdiction. There is no universal licensing fee to add to a VPS estimate: cost depends on the repertoire, territories, rights holders and license.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn the creator, and interrupt or terminate the stream if the material remains. Even if you have a license, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist to help prevent interruptions.
Permission to use music is not a monetization guarantee
Copyright clearance and YouTube Partner Program eligibility are separate questions. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams, and says repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. Creator Music tracks are for long-form videos, not live streams; its help guidance also reports paid licenses being phased out beginning in August 2026. Do not treat Creator Music as a blanket licensing solution for a live study music stream.
How to compare VPS providers without relying on headline prices
Compare the details that determine your actual monthly bill, rather than choosing on an advertised entry price alone:
- Monthly compute cost, instance resources and whether your encoding workload fits them
- Included outbound transfer, how it is pooled, and the overage rate
- Region, currency and tax treatment
- Whether billing continues while a server is powered off
- Availability and reliability terms relevant to a continuous stream
Recheck current plan prices and bandwidth terms before buying. For example, Hetzner announced price adjustments for new orders across its cloud plans and dedicated servers at every location, effective 15 June 2026; older headline prices may therefore be stale.
