You can broadcast a recorded music theory course as a YouTube Live stream by sending its video and audio through an encoder connected to YouTube Studio. The encoder or playback setup—not YouTube itself—must handle looping and recovery, so test both before relying on a continuous broadcast. First make sure the channel can livestream, then configure and test the feed, check course rights, and plan separately for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio.
- A recording or playlist of course material, plus an encoder or hosted service that can play it into a live stream.
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the settings you choose.
- Rights to the course’s music and other included material, including any excerpts, sheet music, images, backing tracks, and guest or student contributions.
YouTube says first-time livestreaming should be enabled at least 24 hours before the planned broadcast. Allow for that lead time and verify your channel is ready in Studio before announcing a start time. YouTube’s guidance on setup and readiness is in Create a live stream with an encoder and YouTube for Artists.
Set up YouTube Studio and your course feed
- Open the Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Choose to create a stream or schedule one. YouTube supports encoder streaming for software or hardware encoders.
- Copy the stream connection details. Use the stream URL and stream key shown in Studio in your encoder. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the configured stream. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the connection in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Load the course recording or playlist. Configure your playback and encoder arrangement to send the intended video and audio. Set the desired repeat behavior in that arrangement; do not assume YouTube will loop a prerecorded file for you.
- Run an unlisted test before publishing. Check the Live Control Room preview, narration, musical examples, slide changes, chapter transitions, and whether notation is readable on a phone-sized screen. Let the recording reach its end and observe what happens; also test a restart and, if practical, an interruption and reconnection. YouTube for Artists recommends testing an unlisted stream.
- Start the scheduled stream deliberately. Once the preview and stream health look right, click Go live in the Live Control Room for a scheduled stream. Keep monitoring stream health after launch.
YouTube explains how to connect and preview an encoder feed, but does not prescribe a particular application or guarantee that a prerecorded course will loop or restart continuously. Those behaviors depend on your chosen playback and streaming setup, so validate them in the unlisted test.
Choose encoding settings your connection can sustain
Use a representative course segment—including narration, notation, and any musical playback—to test the actual signal. YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into formats for different viewers; your encoder still needs to send a stable feed. In its published recommendations, YouTube gives these video bitrates for 1080p at 30 frames per second:

| Video codec | YouTube-recommended bitrate for 1080p30 |
|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can maintain the stream. YouTube also recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Check the current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, test your upload connection, and select settings your setup can sustain.
Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That means one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete replay. Keep a local archive recording, publish the course separately as an on-demand video, or plan shorter sessions with deliberate restarts and an archive workflow. YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive; see its live-stream archive guidance.

Clear rights before broadcasting
The channel operator is responsible for having the necessary rights to material in a livestream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; if it detects material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A licence alone may not prevent a disruption: YouTube says a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for licensed third-party music to be used without an interruption.
For a music theory course, check permissions for full recordings, song excerpts, backing tracks, sheet music, artwork, images, and contributions from guests or students. Educational intent does not by itself establish permission. YouTube for Artists advises coordinating with a label or distributor when planning to use copyright-protected music; review its live-stream guidance and YouTube’s copyright rules for live streams before broadcasting.

Understand monetization and audience expectations
Being able to livestream does not automatically make a channel eligible to earn money from it. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreams and expect monetized content to be original and authentic; repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible. A creator-produced course may provide educational value, but no general rule can predict the outcome of an individual channel review. Check the current YouTube channel monetization policies and treat monetization as conditional on program access and policy compliance.
YouTube for Artists reported that over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That platform-wide figure is context, not an audience forecast for a particular music theory course.

Pick a setup that fits your course
A local software encoder is a practical do-it-yourself route if you have a computer that can run the playback and encoding workload, and you are willing to keep it and its connection running. A hardware encoder is optional, not a baseline requirement; YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary and recommends choosing a method for the use case. A hosted cloud service can keep playback running without a home computer, but confirm that it supports the course files, repeat behavior, recovery, quality, and monitoring you need. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists software and hardware encoder paths and a browser-based 24/7 cloud service; it does not establish vendor pricing or compare providers.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded recording or playlist live; it does not stream from a camera. Upload the course, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
