YouTube has no bhajan-specific rules mode; these are the standard live-chat controls. The steps below reflect YouTube’s help pages as accessed on October 3, 2026; menu labels may change.
Choose rules that fit your chat
Different controls address different problems. Start with the least restrictive setup that handles what you actually see, then adjust it if spam or disruptive messages persist.

You can enable slow mode and subscriber-only chat together. Moderation level, blocked words, and message holds are separate tools: they address potentially inappropriate or unwanted content rather than who may post or how frequently.
Set channel-wide message filters
- In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community moderation → Content controls.
- Under Messages in your live chat, choose a moderation level: None, Basic, or Strict. Basic holds messages YouTube identifies as potentially inappropriate; Strict holds a broader range. YouTube does not prescribe one level for bhajan channels.
- In the blocked-words list, add terms you do not want in chat. YouTube says messages containing or closely matching listed words are blocked.
- When Basic or Strict moderation is on, review held messages and choose whether to show or hide them. If you take no action, held messages remain hidden. YouTube cautions that its system is not perfect.
Keep the blocked-word list focused. Devotional vocabulary, transliterations, and multilingual messages can resemble unwanted terms or be caught by automated moderation. Review held items and revise filters if legitimate messages are being suppressed.

Set participation limits and slow mode for the stream
- Open the stream in Live Control Room and select Edit → Live chat.
- Under Who can send a message, choose Subscribers to restrict participation to subscribers. If available, set the required subscription duration. Choose this when you need a participation barrier, and make the wait clear to viewers.
- To limit posting frequency, open the stream’s Edit → Customization settings, find Message delay → Slow mode, and enter the interval between messages.
- Save the changes and check the live chat to confirm the controls suit the stream.
Menu names can move as YouTube updates Studio. If a label differs in your account, look for the closest current live-chat or customization control.
Write a short, channel-specific rule message
Put a concise explanation where viewers can see it, such as a pinned chat message. For example: “Please keep chat respectful, avoid spam and unsolicited links, and keep messages appropriate to this devotional stream.” This is a suggested channel rule, not a YouTube bhajan policy or preset. Explain any subscriber wait before viewers try to post.

Arrange moderator coverage for an always-on stream
A continuous stream can receive messages while the channel owner is offline. Plan coverage for the hours you cannot monitor chat; this is practical advice for an always-on schedule, not a YouTube requirement.
YouTube distinguishes standard moderators from managing moderators. Moderators can remove messages, time users out, hide users, and review held items. Managing moderators have additional live-chat controls, but they cannot access YouTube Studio or Live Control Room to change the stream’s underlying settings. Assign people you trust and make clear which issues they should handle or escalate.

If chat is missing or unexpectedly unavailable
- The video or stream is made for kids: YouTube disables live chat for content set as made for kids. Check the audience designation before troubleshooting other settings.
- YouTube has turned chat off: YouTube may disable chat when stream content or chat violates its Community Guidelines. Check the stream’s status and applicable notices.
- A moderator cannot change channel settings: Managing moderators do not have access to Studio or Live Control Room. The channel owner must change those settings there.
- Legitimate messages are being held or blocked: Automatic moderation is imperfect. Review held items, reconsider the moderation level, and narrow the blocked-word list if it is catching devotional terms or transliterations.
