1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can use a Raspberry Pi as the host for an encoder that takes an internet radio feed, pairs it with a visual, and sends the resulting audio-and-video stream to YouTube Live. The essentials are a radio feed your encoder can read, a suitable visual source, a YouTube stream URL and key, and permission to rebroadcast the station and its music.
Before you start: confirm rebroadcast rights
A station URL that plays in a browser or media player does not grant permission to retransmit the station on YouTube. Confirm that you have permission from the station and the necessary rights for the music, territories, and any other material in the broadcast. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content; a match can lead to a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. Even where you have a licence, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and YouTube’s terms before transmitting.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi, operating system, and network connection that can sustain the encoder you choose. No minimum Pi model is established for this workflow, so check the chosen software’s requirements and test its resource use on your particular board.
- The station’s internet audio feed and its format details. Your encoder must support the feed and be able to reconnect if the connection drops.
- A visual source, such as a still image, visualizer, loop, or camera feed, to accompany the audio.
- An encoder that can combine the audio and visual input and send a YouTube-compatible stream. Raspberry Pi’s streaming documentation covers network multimedia streaming with rpicam-apps and libav, including audio support in suitable formats. It describes camera/network streaming, not this exact radio-to-YouTube setup; confirm that your selected tools handle your station feed and visual source.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours.
Set up the radio stream on the Pi
- Identify the station feed. Check the feed format and connection details with the station. Choose an encoder that can read that actual format and reconnect if the feed or network drops.
- Choose and prepare the visual. Decide whether to use a still image, visualizer, loop, or camera. The encoder needs to combine this with the audio to produce the video stream YouTube receives.
- Install and configure an encoder. Use software that supports the feed format, selected visual, and a YouTube ingest protocol. The exact audio input, codecs, and muxing settings depend on the feed and the software; Raspberry Pi’s general streaming documentation does not provide a tested command for this exact pipeline. Check the encoder’s documentation rather than assuming one command or setting applies to every station and Pi.
- Test before broadcasting publicly. Confirm that the encoder receives the station audio, combines it with the visual, and can sustain the workload on your Pi and operating system. Check that reconnect behavior is adequate for your connection.
Create the YouTube Live broadcast and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live. Create a broadcast or schedule one.
- In the broadcast’s settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it tells an encoder where to send the broadcast to your channel.
- In your encoder, enter the URL in its server or ingest field and the key in its stream-key field. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this connection step.
- Choose an ingest protocol supported by both YouTube and your encoder. YouTube documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL for encryption; select the RTMPS URL specifically if you want encrypted transport. HLS requires encoder support and has higher latency than continuous RTMP. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol documentation and RTMPS guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview in YouTube Studio. Verify both picture and sound. If the broadcast is scheduled, wait for the preview and then select Go live in Live Control Room.
Monitor the broadcast and end it cleanly
Keep YouTube Studio’s stream health and preview visible while you broadcast. YouTube’s ingest documentation lists health conditions such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. Investigate any warning in the encoder and feed configuration; the right fix depends on which input or output is failing. When you are finished, stop sending content from the encoder and end the broadcast in YouTube Studio as appropriate. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose an encoder by fit, not by a generic recipe
There is no single verified command or setting that fits every radio feed and Pi. Compare candidate encoders on the factors that determine whether your specific setup will work:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Support for the station’s actual audio format and reliable reconnect behavior.
- Ability to pair the audio with your chosen still, visualizer, loop, or camera source.
- Support for the YouTube ingest protocol you intend to use, including RTMPS if you want encrypted transport.
- Resource use on your particular Raspberry Pi model and operating system under sustained load.
- Monitoring and recovery features that help you detect and respond to a broken feed or dropped connection.
Troubleshooting
YouTube preview has no sound
Check that the encoder is receiving the station feed, that the feed format is supported, and that the encoder is including audio in its outgoing stream. YouTube identifies missing audio as a stream-health condition. Test the full chain before going public.
YouTube preview has no picture
Confirm that the encoder is combining the radio audio with a valid visual source. An audio feed alone does not provide the video component expected in this encoder workflow; check the preview for both picture and sound.

The stream drops or the station audio stops
Check the station feed and network connection, then determine whether your encoder can reconnect after an interruption. Monitor the stream health in YouTube Studio and test the recovery behavior before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.
YouTube reports a bitrate or frame-rate issue
Check the encoder’s output and its compatibility with the selected ingest settings. YouTube lists low video bitrate and frame-rate mismatch among stream-health conditions; adjust only after identifying the relevant output setting and verifying the preview again.

A copyright notice interrupts the broadcast
Stop and resolve the rights issue with the relevant station or rights holder. A publicly reachable feed does not establish rebroadcast rights, and a licence may not prevent an interruption unless the rights holder has also allowlisted your channel in Content ID.
