YouTube Studio supplies the ingest details. AzuraCast’s documentation does not describe a native YouTube video destination or a complete, supported end-to-end recipe, so treat the encoder setup below as a workflow to configure and test for your own station.
What you need—and which AzuraCast audio to use
The encoder needs two inputs: an AzuraCast audio stream and an image it can keep displaying. It packages them as one audiovisual stream for YouTube. This is different from sending an audio-only radio mount directly to YouTube, which does not provide the video signal a live broadcast needs.
If AzuraCast AutoDJ is playing
Use the station’s public listen URL or mount point as the encoder’s audio input. AzuraCast’s AutoDJ uses Liquidsoap to produce and manipulate station audio, while the broadcast frontend distributes it to listeners. Available mount points can differ in format or bitrate; use the URL shown for your own station rather than assuming every mount is interchangeable. See AzuraCast’s documentation for station details.
If a DJ is broadcasting into AzuraCast
The station audio heard by listeners remains the input to the downstream encoder, but first confirm that the DJ’s broadcast reaches AzuraCast. Use the connection information for your station, not example hostnames or credentials. AzuraCast documents compatible broadcast software connecting to Liquidsoap. If a reverse proxy blocks broadcaster connections, its encoder guidance advises using the server’s direct address for broadcaster software.

Choose where the encoder will run
Run the encoder on a computer or server that can stay available for the duration of the broadcast and reach both the AzuraCast audio URL and YouTube’s ingest endpoint. This is a practical requirement of the workflow, not a specific hardware requirement published by AzuraCast or YouTube.

- A machine you already have may be enough if it stays on, has stable outbound bandwidth, and can reach the station stream.
- An always-on server is an option if a local computer cannot reliably run the encoder. Consider uptime, bandwidth, access to the audio URL, and how you will protect the stream key.
There is no need to buy dedicated streaming hardware for the software workflow described here. The important constraint is that the encoder process must keep running and maintain its connection.
Combine the station audio and still image
Use FFmpeg or another compatible encoder with one input for the station’s audio stream and another for the still image. Configure the image input to repeat continuously, encode a continuous video stream, and send both video and audio to the YouTube ingest address for the broadcast you selected in YouTube Studio.

The following is a configuration sketch, not a tested, ready-to-run command. Replace the placeholders and adapt options to your installed FFmpeg build, the actual audio format of your station mount, image dimensions, and the current YouTube settings. Consult the FFmpeg manual for option syntax.
ffmpeg -re -loop 1 -i /path/to/station-image.jpg -i "STATION_LISTEN_URL"
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This example uses a 720p30-oriented video rate and a two-second keyframe interval at 30 frames per second. It assumes an FFmpeg build with the named encoder available, an image suitable for the output dimensions, an audio input that FFmpeg can read, and an RTMPS ingest address in the format supplied for your broadcast. You may need to scale or pad the image to the chosen output size and adjust input options for the station stream. Do not copy the placeholder URL as an actual ingest address or replace it with a key in any public example.

For a production setup, verify that the image is continuously producing frames, that the stream’s audio is mapped to the output, and that your command exits visibly on connection failure rather than appearing to run while YouTube receives nothing. FFmpeg option behavior can depend on input type and build; validate your actual command with a private or unlisted test broadcast.
Set the YouTube Live encoder profile
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live broadcast and copy its ingest address and stream key into the encoder’s private configuration. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Its current Help guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, no longer than four seconds. Check the live YouTube encoder settings before configuring a broadcast, because platform guidance may change.

| Setting | Illustrative choice | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported video codecs. |
| Video resolution and frame rate | 1280 Ă— 720 at 30 fps | A practical example for a static visual; choose an output your encoder and connection can sustain. |
| Video bitrate | 3 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30 | YouTube Help’s recommended value, current page accessed 2026; not a required rate for every channel or connection. |
| Higher-resolution example | 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 | YouTube Help’s recommended value, current page accessed 2026; use only if the encoder and uplink can sustain it. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s listed encoder guidance. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four; at 30 fps, a two-second GOP is 60 frames. |
| Audio | AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube Help’s recommended stereo audio bitrate and sample rate, current page accessed 2026. Confirm the source and output channel layout. |
| Ingest transport | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the ingest details shown for the selected broadcast. |
These are platform recommendations and an illustrative SDR profile, not guarantees of the best result for every station. Set a video bitrate the encoder’s outbound connection can sustain with room for audio and network variation. Recheck YouTube’s settings page rather than treating the figures as permanent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Start the encoder and verify the broadcast
- Prepare the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Select or create the live broadcast and obtain its ingest details. Keep the stream key private.
- Confirm both inputs. Make sure the encoder can read the station listen URL and the image file. For a DJ feed, confirm the DJ is connected to AzuraCast and the station output is audible.
- Start the encoder privately. Launch the configured FFmpeg process or compatible encoder, then wait for YouTube Studio to recognize the incoming stream.
- Inspect picture and sound. Confirm the still image appears, station audio is present, and the audio remains continuous and in sync with the video.
- Check stream health before going public. Review YouTube Studio’s status and notices, then select the intended broadcast before starting it publicly. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the eventual stream and monitoring stream health.
For a static image, there may be little visible motion, but the encoder still needs to send a continuous video signal. Test reconnection behavior as well: if the encoder or either network path drops, confirm how your chosen software behaves before relying on the broadcast.
Static image or now-playing information?
A fixed logo or cover image is the simpler setup: the encoder repeats the same visual while the station audio continues. If you want track title or artist details, AzuraCast exposes a now-playing JSON endpoint that is updated every few seconds. That endpoint supplies metadata; it does not create a YouTube overlay. A separate overlay or rendering process must read the metadata and draw it into the video stream, which adds implementation and failure points.
Troubleshoot common failures
- No audio reaches YouTube: Check that the listen URL is reachable from the encoder host, that the selected mount is correct, and that the encoder maps the audio input to its output. If the station itself has no generated audio, inspect AzuraCast’s Liquidsoap and station logs.
- The encoder cannot connect to AzuraCast: Recheck the server address, port, mount point, and any DJ credentials. A reverse proxy may block broadcaster ports; AzuraCast’s guidance recommends the direct server address for broadcaster connections in that situation.
- YouTube receives audio but no picture: Confirm the still image is being looped into a continuous video input and that the output uses a video codec supported by YouTube. Check the encoder log for image-read, scaling, or video-encoder errors.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health: Reduce the video bitrate or resolution, check available outbound capacity, and test again while watching YouTube Studio’s health notices. Avoid setting a bitrate that consumes the full practical capacity of the connection.
- The displayed track information does not change: The JSON endpoint is only metadata. Check that your separate overlay code is fetching it and rendering updated values into the video frames.
- The stream stops when a connection drops: Determine whether the encoder reconnects to the AzuraCast input and YouTube ingest automatically. Test that behavior before a public, long-running broadcast; recovery depends on the encoder and network setup you chose.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain an always-on encoder for this setup, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. It is not an AzuraCast audio-forwarding encoder: it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera or an external station audio URL. For a suitable pre-recorded video, you upload it, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud.
