How to Keep a 24/7 YouTube Stream Running When the Video Folder Changes

A running encoder may not notice folder changes. Use a playlist with known refresh behavior, test its reload or restart path, and keep a fallback input ready.

Changing files in a folder does not necessarily update a 24/7 YouTube stream that is already running. The encoder or streaming service reads from its own active media input or playlist; YouTube does not make that input watch your local folder. To get new videos into the broadcast, use a playlist with known refresh behavior, then follow that software’s supported reload or restart procedure. Test it before relying on it, and keep a known-good fallback input ready so a missing or still-uploading file does not leave the stream without media.

Why a folder change may not reach the live stream

A YouTube broadcast and the media source feeding it are separate parts of the workflow. YouTube’s Live Streaming API manages broadcast and stream resources; it does not establish that an encoder is watching a local directory for changes. The running encoder may have loaded a playlist or file list when it started and continue using that selection until you explicitly reload or restart it.

That means adding, deleting, or replacing a video on disk is not proof that the live playlist changed. Folder watching and playlist refresh behavior depend on the specific encoder, player, operating system, and setup. There is no universal folder-watching method established for every combination.

Make playlist updates safely

Check what your encoder actually refreshes

Find out whether your software rescans a directory automatically, reloads a playlist on command, or requires the stream process to restart. Do not assume that updating a playlist file on disk updates the copy already loaded in a running process. Confirm the behavior for the version you have installed; FFmpeg documentation changes over time, so match any instructions to your installed version.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use a controlled update instead of relying on a live folder edit

  1. Keep a known-good playlist or input. Make sure it contains media that can continue playing if a new file is absent, incomplete, or unreadable.
  2. Prepare the replacement video before adding it. Wait for a file copy or upload to finish, then check that the media is playable. Avoid pointing the live process at a file while it is still being written.
  3. Update the playlist through the software’s supported path. If the active process does not rescan, use its documented reload or restart procedure rather than assuming a folder change will be detected.
  4. Test the update before depending on it. Confirm that the new video appears in the intended order and that playback continues through the transition. Test what happens if the file is missing or corrupt.
  5. Keep a fallback ready. A known-good input or slate gives you a recovery path if the changed playlist cannot be read.

FFmpeg’s HLS playlist modes are a separate issue from watching a media folder. In its documentation, an event playlist can only be appended to, while a VOD playlist must not change. Those constraints apply to generating HLS output; they do not create a general directory watcher.

Do not confuse HLS ingestion rules with ordinary playlist updates

If your stream uses YouTube HLS ingestion, follow the HLS-specific requirements: use TS segments, send them with HTTPS POST or PUT, and keep the rolling playlist to no more than five outstanding segments. These are requirements for HLS ingestion, not general instructions for every YouTube stream or a way to make an encoder rescan a folder.

Choose a workflow based on where the media lives

Workflow What to verify Main operational concern
Local folder and encoder Whether the active process rescans, reloads a playlist, or needs a restart Manual updates, file readiness, and recovery if a file cannot be played
Service library or cloud storage How content is selected, whether later edits sync into an active stream, and any plan or duration limits Selection and synchronization behavior may differ; setup instructions alone do not prove live folder synchronization
HLS output That the HLS-specific segment, transport, and rolling-playlist requirements are met HLS formatting rules do not solve media-library refresh behavior

Managed services: selection is not the same as live synchronization

StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping an uploaded-video YouTube stream live: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. The documented workflow does not establish that changing a connected folder automatically updates an already-running broadcast, so treat it as a way to run an uploaded-video stream rather than as a promise of live folder synchronization. See StreamNeo for the service details.

OneStream Live documents setting up a 24-hour stream by selecting videos from a device, OSL Storage, or cloud storage. Its Help Center, updated September 3, 2026, states that 24/7 streaming requires Enterprise and allows a maximum stream duration of 30 days. Those setup details do not establish that changes to the selected source enter a stream already in progress. Check the current plan terms and ask the provider specifically about active-broadcast synchronization before choosing it for that purpose.

Protect the broadcast and its archive

Plan for recording separately from keeping the broadcast live. YouTube says that streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but this is not a guarantee that every such stream will be archived. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup and cautions that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete recording, keep your own local archive rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive.

Troubleshoot playlist changes

  • The new video never appears: Check whether the active encoder reloads the playlist or rescans the folder. If it does not, follow its supported reload or restart path.
  • The stream stalls after an update: Check that the replacement file finished copying or uploading and is playable. Restore the last known-good playlist or fallback input while you investigate.
  • The order is wrong: Confirm the order in the playlist the running process actually uses, not only the files visible in the folder.
  • A hosted stream does not reflect cloud edits: Confirm whether the service synchronizes later source changes during an active broadcast. Selecting content at setup does not by itself establish that it does.
  • An HLS stream is rejected or stops advancing: Check the HLS-specific requirements: TS segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, and no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist.
  • You need a recording of a long broadcast: Keep an independent local archive, especially for a stream that may exceed 12 hours.
