How to Make an FFmpeg Bhajan Stream Reconnect After an Internet Drop

FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options do not automatically restore an RTMP publishing output. Identify the failing side, then test restart behavior and playback continuity.

First find out which connection failed. FFmpeg’s documented HTTP reconnect options apply when it is reading an HTTP source; they do not establish automatic recovery for an RTMP publishing output. If an RTMP-publishing FFmpeg process exits after an internet drop, an external supervisor can restart it—but that does not guarantee gapless playback or resumption at the right point.

First identify what FFmpeg is connecting to

Check the command’s input and output separately. A bhajan stream might read an HTTP audio feed, publish a local recording to an RTMP destination, or do both. The recovery method depends on which side dropped.

  • HTTP input: FFmpeg is reading a URL over HTTP. The FFmpeg project documents reconnect options for this protocol.
  • RTMP output: FFmpeg is publishing audio or video to a streaming server. The FFmpeg protocol documentation shows RTMP publishing syntax, but does not document the HTTP reconnect flags as a way to resume a failed RTMP output.

Do not add HTTP reconnect flags to an RTMP output on the assumption that they will fix it. The option names and behavior are protocol-specific. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

If FFmpeg is reading an HTTP source

The documented HTTP options can retry certain interrupted reads. Their availability and exact behavior should be checked against the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • reconnect reconnects automatically after disconnection before end-of-file.
  • reconnect_at_eof treats end-of-file as an error and attempts reconnection; the FFmpeg documentation describes this as useful for live or endless streams.
  • reconnect_on_network_error retries TCP or TLS errors during connection establishment.
  • reconnect_on_http_error can select HTTP status codes or classes, such as 4xx or 5xx.
  • reconnect_streamed allows reconnects for streamed, non-seekable resources.
  • reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max let you bound retry delays or attempts.

These controls address an HTTP input. They do not relaunch FFmpeg, repair a failed RTMP publishing session, or ensure an audio source can resume at the desired position.

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream

It demonstrates the RTMP output shape, not a retry mechanism. If the publishing connection fails and FFmpeg exits, use a process supervisor or restart loop to launch the command again. The exact supervisor configuration depends on your operating system, service manager, command, and destination, so there is no one-size-fits-all restart command that can be stated reliably here.

A restart is not the same as a seamless resume. If the input is a finite bhajan recording, a newly launched command may begin playing from the start. If it is a live or endless source, whether playback continues appropriately depends on that source and how the command is started. The receiving service must also accept a new connection; its behavior is destination-specific.

Check the installed FFmpeg build and timeout behavior

  1. Record the command and protocols. Identify the input URL and protocol and the output URL and protocol. This distinguishes an HTTP read failure from an RTMP publishing failure.
  2. Inspect the local build. Run ffmpeg -protocols to list protocols supported by the installed tools. Protocol availability depends on how FFmpeg was built. Consult the installed version’s documentation before relying on an option.
  3. Understand rw_timeout. FFmpeg defines this as the maximum time to wait for network read or write operations, in microseconds. It can limit waiting, but it is a timeout—not a reconnect policy, process restart, or guarantee that a destination session can resume. See the FFmpeg documentation on timeouts and protocol support.
  4. Capture logs during a controlled test. Note whether the failure is a DNS or connection error, a timeout, an authentication rejection, or a destination-side session rejection. The logs can help distinguish these cases, but the streaming provider’s response must be checked with that provider.

Test continuity before relying on a restart

Simulate a short network interruption in a controlled test, then verify both ends: whether the FFmpeg process exits or remains running, and whether the destination accepts the new connection. Check what the bhajan source plays after restart—its beginning, a later position, or a continuing live feed—and listen for any gap or repeated passage. Do not describe the setup as gapless unless it has been tested with the same input, FFmpeg build, supervisor, and destination used for the real stream.
