Choose OBS if you want a graphical control room for scenes and hands-on operation; choose FFmpeg if you want a scripted, headless pipeline for looping prepared media. Neither tool is documented as guaranteeing uninterrupted 24/7 uptime. For a nonstop podcast, the choice is about how you operate the encoder; continuous delivery also depends on reliable media input, process supervision, network recovery, and monitoring.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your podcast?
| Decision point | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| How you operate it | A graphical interface with scenes and visible settings, suited to hands-on changes. | Command-line options for configuring inputs, stream mapping, encoding, and output; suited to scripted operation. |
| Prepared-media loop | Build the show from media sources and scenes, then test the actual loop before relying on it. | Works naturally with file-based processing and explicit stream mapping. Loop flags and behavior depend on the input and installed FFmpeg version. |
| Recovering from output interruption | Automatic reconnect is available for supported outputs, with configurable retry count and delay. | The FIFO muxer can be configured to attempt recovery from temporary RTMP output failures; configure and supervise it. |
| Best fit | Creators who want visible controls and scene composition. | Operators comfortable with commands, scripts, and process supervision. |
| Uptime evidence | No official source cited here promises 24/7 uptime or establishes a reliability advantage over FFmpeg. | No official source cited here promises 24/7 uptime or establishes a reliability advantage over OBS. |
This is a workflow distinction, not a head-to-head reliability test. OBS documents its interface and reconnect controls; FFmpeg documents its command-line workflow and output options. Neither removes the need to plan for failures outside the encoder, such as a stopped host, unavailable source file, or network outage.
Set YouTube’s ingest settings before you start
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream, then copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: it is what allows an encoder to connect to the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s live encoder setup instructions for the current interface.
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as the reference for the codec and mode you select. Its guidance includes RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to Google’s servers.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps as its recommended sample rate and bitrate.
- H.264 video bitrate examples: the current YouTube table lists 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. Its corresponding minimums are 5 Mbps and 2 Mbps. These are guidance for those specific modes, not a universal bitrate or a guarantee that your connection can sustain the stream.
The YouTube table varies by codec and resolution, so check the row for your chosen configuration rather than applying a number from another mode. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Configure OBS for a prepared-media broadcast
- Build and inspect the show. Add the podcast video or audio as a media source, or assemble the intended scenes and sources. Confirm the media behaves as intended at the end of the file and when it loops. OBS’s main-screen overview explains its scene-and-source workflow.
- Set output and stream details. In OBS, open Settings and configure the stream service and server/key from YouTube Live Control Room. Set a codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, audio format, and keyframe interval compatible with YouTube’s current recommendations. Check the selected output mode and encoder settings in OBS rather than assuming a preset matches your target.
- Enable reconnect where supported. In the applicable OBS output settings, turn on automatic reconnect and choose a retry count and delay that suit your operation. OBS documents retry intervals that double; reconnect can help after a temporary output interruption but cannot restore a failed computer, missing media, or broken connection. See OBS output reconnect documentation.
- Run a representative test. Test the exact media and scenes, check that sound and picture are present and synchronized, and inspect YouTube’s stream health and messages. If safe, simulate a recoverable interruption to observe what happens before relying on the setup for a public broadcast. OBS advises testing settings and scenes before use.
Configure FFmpeg for a prepared-media broadcast
FFmpeg is a command-line tool, not a single fixed streaming workflow. You specify the input, map the streams you want, configure encoding and output, and send the result to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. The exact looping options depend on the media and installed FFmpeg version. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for the options supported by your build.

- Check your build and media. Confirm the installed FFmpeg version and that it can read the files and codecs in your show. Test the input locally first so file access, decoding, audio, and video are known to work.
- Construct the output deliberately. Specify the input and its loop behavior, map the intended audio and video streams, then set output encoding, rate control, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and the YouTube RTMP or RTMPS destination. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so their position matters; verify the mapping and output options for the command you use.
- Keep the process supervised. For a durable unattended service, arrange supervision outside FFmpeg and retain logs so a stopped process or repeated output failure is visible. This is operational guidance, not a guarantee supplied by the encoder.
- Consider configured output recovery. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents a pattern for attempting recovery after temporary RTMP output failures. It must be configured for the use case and still requires supervision; it does not cover every input, host, or network failure. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.
- Test end to end. Run the exact media and command, confirm synchronized audio and video, and monitor YouTube stream health and messages. If safe, test a recoverable interruption and check the logs and resulting stream before going public.
Plan for two different kinds of continuity
Keeping the encoder sending
A process that keeps running is only one part of a live stream. Your input must remain available, the host and network must stay usable, and output interruptions need an appropriate recovery plan. OBS reconnect and FFmpeg FIFO recovery address some temporary output failures, not every failure mode. Monitor the broadcast rather than treating a reconnect setting as an uptime guarantee.
Keeping a complete YouTube replay
A continuous feed and a complete archive are separate goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete replay. If a full archive matters, record separately or divide the broadcast into shorter sessions, then verify the result in YouTube Studio.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the stream: recheck the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room and the encoder. Confirm the key is current and has not been exposed.
- Video or audio is missing: verify the source file plays, then check OBS sources or FFmpeg input and stream mapping. A valid output connection cannot compensate for a missing input stream.
- Audio and video drift or output is unstable: inspect the chosen frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s recommendations for that codec and resolution. Check whether the connection can sustain the selected output.
- The stream stops after a network interruption: confirm OBS automatic reconnect is enabled for the output, or that FFmpeg’s recovery configuration is in place. Check host connectivity, process status, and logs; recovery features are limited to supported interruption cases.
- The expected replay is missing or incomplete: check whether the broadcast exceeded YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive condition. For a required full-length recording, use separate recording or shorter sessions and verify the archive in Studio.
