To send an OBS lecture feed to YouTube, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter them in OBS, and start streaming. For a scheduled broadcast, check the preview and click Go live if the event requires it. The key authorizes the encoder feed; it does not keep your computer, lecture source, power, or internet connection running. A genuine 24/7 stream needs a plan for those parts too.
Before you connect OBS: confirm YouTube Live access
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before a scheduled lecture. YouTube’s live-streaming help explains eligibility and activation.
- Decide whether you are broadcasting a live lecture or sending prerecorded material. OBS can send either a camera/microphone scene or a media source, but the source must remain available for the duration you intend to broadcast.
Find the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go Live to enter Live Control Room.
- On the Stream tab, create a stream or select the stream you intend to use. YouTube supports reusable stream settings and custom reusable keys.
- Copy both the stream URL and the stream key. The URL is the encoder’s destination; the key authorizes the encoder feed. Treat the key like a password: do not post it, show it on screen, or send it to an untrusted person. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
If a key is exposed or you suspect someone else has it, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in OBS. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a key.
Enter the key in OBS and start the feed
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. If YouTube is available as a service, select it and connect or enter the key as prompted. If using a custom server, paste YouTube’s stream URL into the server field and the key into the stream-key field. OBS menu labels can differ by version; use the installed version’s fields for service, server, and key.
- Apply the settings, then select Start Streaming in OBS. Keep OBS open with the intended scene or media source active.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Check the video and audio before publication.
- For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Live Control Room if the event workflow requires a separate publication action. Confirm whether auto-start is enabled for that stream rather than assuming that starting OBS publishes the event.
- To finish, stop the encoder and follow the event controls in YouTube Studio to end the published stream cleanly.
YouTube’s encoder workflow and event controls are described in its live streaming with an encoder instructions.
Prepare the lecture scene for a long broadcast
Choose a source that will still be available
For a live lecture, build an OBS scene using the camera, microphone, or screen sources the session needs. For a prerecorded lecture, use a media source or playlist and test what happens when playback ends. A stream can remain connected while its source is black, silent, frozen, or finished; check the scene behavior rather than treating an active stream indicator as proof that the lecture is playing.

Set stream quality deliberately
There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every connection and production. Choose output settings that your upload bandwidth can sustain, test the result in YouTube’s preview, and watch for dropped frames or buffering. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance provides its current recommendations for resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes. Do not copy a bitrate from another creator without matching the output resolution and frame rate.
Test publication and recovery before relying on it
For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Preview the stream, confirm the watch page opens on desktop and mobile, check audio and video, and test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting Ethernet. If recording locally, verify that the archive file is growing. These checks reveal problems; they do not guarantee a continuous broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

What a 24/7 OBS stream needs beyond the key
OBS sends the feed from the machine running it. For uninterrupted operation, the video source, OBS process, computer, power, and network all need to keep working, with someone or something able to respond when they do not. A stream key is only the connection credential; it is not an uptime or recovery service.
- Test the exact scene or playlist through source changes, playback endings, and restarts.
- Check OBS reconnect behavior and test what happens after a brief internet outage or encoder stop.
- Plan for power and network failures, including who can restart the encoder and whether the event needs to be republished.
- Monitor audio and video during the broadcast; do not assume that a connected encoder means viewers are receiving a usable lecture.
YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop controls for streams, but their effect depends on the stream’s settings. Check those controls in Live Control Room before relying on encoder start or stop actions alone.

Plan latency, DVR, and the lecture archive
YouTube offers latency choices and DVR. Lower latency can increase buffering, and YouTube notes it is less important when the streamer is not interacting with the audience. For a lecture, choose based on whether viewers need near-real-time interaction or would benefit more from steady playback. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during the stream.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single broadcast longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete video. For a continuous lecture channel, plan deliberate stream segments or a separate local recording/archive process, and verify current Studio behavior before launch. Details are in YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Wrong server URL or stream key, or the encoder is not streaming. | Compare the OBS server and key fields with the values in Live Control Room. Start streaming in OBS and check that the selected service or custom server is correct. |
| Preview appears, but viewers cannot watch | The scheduled event may still require publication. | Check the event in Live Control Room and select Go live if required; confirm the event’s auto-start setting. |
| The stream stops after a brief interruption | Power, internet, computer, OBS, or source interruption. | Test encoder reconnect behavior and your recovery plan. YouTube recommends failover testing; it does not promise that a local encoder will recover unattended. |
| Viewers see a blank screen or hear silence | Inactive scene source, ended media playback, muted audio, or a source transition. | Inspect the active OBS scene and audio meters, then test the full playback cycle before using the setup unattended. |
| The live stream is missing or incomplete in archives | A broadcast longer than YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive scope. | Split long runs into planned events or keep a separate recording and verify the current Studio archive behavior. |
| The stream key no longer works | The key may have been reset or the wrong key may be pasted into OBS. | Copy the active key from Live Control Room. If it was exposed, reset it and update OBS. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded lectures that should loop continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. It is for uploaded video, not a live camera lecture. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.

Copyright and lecture-content checks
Before leaving a lecture stream unattended, confirm you have the rights to every video, music track, image, and other material in the broadcast. A stream key does not grant content rights or protect a channel from copyright enforcement. Review YouTube’s current rules and your permissions for recorded lectures, third-party clips, and music. The copyright safety checklist can help you review uploaded material.
