To keep OBS streaming, prevent the computer from entering system sleep; the display can usually turn off separately. On Windows 11, adjust the plugged-in device sleep timeout in Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. On a Mac connected to power, enable Apple’s option to prevent automatic sleep when the display is off. Then test the complete stream setup before relying on it for a lecture.
System sleep and display sleep are different
Display sleep turns off the screen. System sleep suspends the computer and can interrupt OBS’s ability to keep rendering and streaming. For an unattended lecture stream, configure the computer not to sleep while it is plugged in; choose a separate screen timeout based on whether you need to watch the display.
OBS has sleep-inhibition functions in its developer API, including os_inhibit_sleep_create and os_inhibit_sleep_set_active. That establishes that OBS code can request sleep inhibition, but it is not a universal user-facing setting or a guarantee of identical behavior across operating systems and OBS versions. An OBS community discussion describes why OBS may prevent Windows from sleeping while it is open, but treat that as community guidance, not a formal guarantee. Keep a Windows 11 computer awake
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Windows exposes separate screen and device sleep controls. Microsoft: adjust power and sleep settings
- Find the plugged-in setting for when the device goes to sleep and set it so the computer will not sleep during the lecture. The label or available choices may vary with the Windows build and device.
- Set the plugged-in screen-off timeout independently. The screen can turn off without intentionally putting the device to sleep.
- Keep the computer connected to power and verify the settings on the machine that will actually run the stream. If you use a laptop, check how its lid-close behavior is configured; do not assume a screen timeout and a closed lid behave the same way.
Windows can honor system-required requests that prevent automatic sleep. OBS forum users discuss powercfg -requests and request overrides, but these are community suggestions rather than normal first-line Microsoft or OBS instructions. Start with the ordinary timeout controls; a request override changes how sleep requests are handled and should not be applied casually. Microsoft powercfg command-line options

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep a Mac awake while the display is off
- Connect the Mac to its power adapter.
- Open System Settings and check the Lock Screen and Battery options for the installed macOS version.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off, if that option is available. Apple documents this as a way to let the display turn off while the Mac stays awake on adapter power.
- Confirm the Mac remains awake with the display off and OBS continues streaming during a test.
Apple notes that preventing or delaying sleep may increase power use. The settings location and wording can change between macOS versions, so use the current version’s settings if the label differs. Apple: prevent your Mac from sleeping
Linux and other configurations
Linux power controls depend on the distribution and desktop environment. Check the power-management settings for your specific system and verify whether its screen-off and system-sleep controls are separate. There is no single verified menu path that applies to every Linux desktop; OBS’s system requirements page does not explain how to disable sleep. OBS system requirements

Starting OBS automatically is not recovery
OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. It can start streaming when OBS launches as part of a prepared workflow, but it is not a keep-awake switch and does not, by itself, restart OBS after a crash or guarantee recovery from a network interruption, operating-system restart, or power failure. Follow OBS’s launch-parameter instructions for your platform and test the workflow rather than treating automatic startup as uninterrupted broadcasting. OBS launch parameters
Test the complete lecture stream
The OBS Quick Start Guide advises: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.” A few minutes can reveal basic setup problems, but it does not prove day-long reliability. For a 24/7 lecture, run a longer practical check of your own complete setup before relying on it; that longer check is a prudent recommendation, not an OBS-prescribed duration. OBS Quick Start Guide

Also account for the difference between minimum compatibility and usable streaming performance: OBS says meeting its system requirements does not guarantee performance. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect hardware demand. OBS system requirements
Common problems and what to check
- The stream stops when the screen goes dark: Check whether the computer entered system sleep, not just whether the display turned off. Recheck the plugged-in device sleep setting and test again.
- The settings look right, but the computer still sleeps: Confirm you changed the plugged-in timeout on the actual streaming machine. Windows power requests can also affect sleep behavior; avoid request overrides unless you understand their effect.
- A Mac sleeps with its display off: Confirm it is connected to power and check the current macOS Lock Screen and Battery settings for Apple’s prevent-sleep option.
- OBS launches but the broadcast does not resume after a failure:
--startstreamingstarts streaming when OBS is launched; it does not provide crash supervision or guarantee recovery from interruptions. - The machine stays awake, but the stream is unstable: Sleep settings address only one interruption cause. A crash, update or reboot, thermal issue, network or ingest disruption, power failure, or lid-close behavior can still affect an unattended stream. Test and plan for the specific setup rather than assuming sleep prevention guarantees uptime.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps a pre-recorded lecture live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream a live camera feed.
