You can run an ASMR rain-and-thunder stream from a spare PC by sending a looping scene to YouTube through an encoder such as OBS. First confirm your channel can livestream, use audio and visuals cleared for your intended use, and set the encoder to a bitrate your internet connection can sustain overnight. A home PC and residential connection can reduce reliance on a cloud service, but neither guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 delivery.
Before you start: check channel access and prepare original content
Confirm YouTube livestream access
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and check that livestreaming is available on your channel. YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take time, so verify access before planning a launch date.
Use rights-cleared audio and visuals
Use recordings you made or have permission to use for worldwide livestreaming and any archived replay you intend to keep. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions make the creator responsible for having necessary rights, including applicable music rights, and require live content to follow Community Guidelines. Keep source files, licenses, and permission records. A file described as “free” is not automatically cleared for livestreaming or monetization.
Give the stream a recognizable identity: for example, record your own rain, create an original thunder mix, or build gentle scene changes instead of running an unchanged stock loop indefinitely. This is a creative safeguard, not a monetization guarantee. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreams; repetitive, generic, or mass-produced content can be ineligible even when it is technically possible to stream. YouTube says monetized content should “Be your original creation.”

Create the stream in YouTube Studio and connect the PC
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go live. Create a stream or schedule one, and set its title, audience, visibility, and other event details.
- Open your encoder: Add a scene with the intended rain-and-thunder visual and audio. A still image can be used if that is your artistic choice, but check the result in the preview and avoid unintended silence or clipping.
- Connect to YouTube: Choose YouTube in the encoder if available, or enter the server URL and paste the stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password; reset it if it is exposed.
- Check the preview before going live: Wait for the incoming stream to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the correct scene and sound, then start the public event from the encoder or Studio as appropriate to your setup.
YouTube’s encoder workflow does not set a universal minimum PC specification. An older spare PC may work if it can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate continuously without dropped frames or overheating; test the actual machine rather than relying on a general hardware label.
Choose video and audio settings that your connection can sustain
Start with a manageable resolution and frame rate
For a mostly static ambience scene, 720p30 or 1080p30 is a practical starting point if both the encoder and the sustained upload connection support it. H.264 is a broadly compatible starting codec. YouTube’s current encoder settings recommendations list these H.264 video bitrates:

These are YouTube recommendations, not mandatory minimums or guarantees about Indian ISP performance. YouTube’s recommended settings also include RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Match the encoder to the current Studio instructions and your available options; recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
Test upload at the PC’s actual location and at times similar to when the stream will run. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. For example, a 10 Mbps video bitrate is not a safe choice merely because a quick speed test briefly reports 10 Mbps upload: audio and network variation also need capacity. If running a primary and backup encoder, YouTube says to account for both bitrates plus 20% headroom.

A speed-test peak does not establish that the route will remain stable all night. Watch Live Control Room’s stream health during a trial. If you see dropped frames or instability, lower the bitrate or resolution, retest, and only then leave the stream unattended.
Run a private or unlisted test before the overnight stream
Use the real loop, audio, encoder settings, and home network for a trial before making the event public. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend checking the preview, confirming access from channel and watch pages and mobile devices, testing configured backup-encoder failover, and monitoring audio and video quality.

- Listen for silence, clipping, sudden volume changes, or an unintended abrupt loop seam.
- Check that the image, overlays, and stream title are correct and that the scene behaves as intended.
- Confirm the watch page opens on another device and that the stream health indicator is stable.
- If recording locally, verify that the recording file is growing and can be played back.
- If you configured backup encoding or network failover, test the switch deliberately; do not assume it will work during an outage.
Plan for outages, viewer access, and a complete replay
Know what can interrupt a home stream
A PC crash, power loss, router or modem failure, ISP disruption, encoder fault, or YouTube-side interruption can stop delivery. A UPS or inverter for the PC does not cover a dead router, modem, or ISP path. Size backup power for the measured load and desired runtime, and consider network and power backup as separate failure modes. There is no universal India-wide outage runtime or backup capacity that can be assumed for every home.
Do not treat a long live event as a guaranteed archive
YouTube’s encoder help guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise a complete archive for one event that runs longer than 12 hours. If retaining a replay matters, enable local recording and test it, then consider a deliberate stream-rotation plan. Ending and restarting can interrupt the live session; YouTube’s cited guidance does not guarantee a seamless rollover.

DVR can let viewers pause or rewind when enabled, but check its availability and behavior in the current stream settings. Continuous delivery and a complete, viewable archive are separate goals: plan and verify each one.
