For an HTTP audio input, start by enabling FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options, then identify whether the failure is a dropped connection, end-of-file, an HTTP error, or an output/decoder problem. These flags are protocol-specific: they do not automatically fix RTMP, Icecast, RTSP, or output-side failures. Without your full command, error text, input URL, and FFmpeg version, no single setting can be identified as the fix.
Start with this HTTP-input template
If the rain audio comes from an HTTP URL and the log indicates that the input connection is dropping, this is a reasonable starting example based on FFmpeg’s documented HTTP options. It has not been tested against your source or output, and it cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback.
ffmpeg
-reconnect 1
-reconnect_at_eof 1
-reconnect_on_network_error 1
-reconnect_streamed 1
-reconnect_delay_max 30
-i "INPUT_URL"
-vn -c:a copy OUTPUT
Replace INPUT_URL and OUTPUT with your actual endpoints. The reconnect options must apply to the HTTP input, so keep them before -i. -vn ignores video and -c:a copy copies the audio stream without re-encoding; use appropriate audio encoding and container settings if your destination does not accept the source audio format. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation for the HTTP options and syntax.
Match the option to the failure
Connection drops before EOF
-reconnect 1 asks FFmpeg to reconnect when the connection disconnects before reaching EOF. It is disabled by default in the current upstream HTTP implementation, but defaults can differ in the binary you have installed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The input reaches EOF
-reconnect_at_eof 1 treats EOF as an error and reconnects. FFmpeg describes this as useful for live or endless streams. Use it only when EOF should mean “try the source again”—for example, when the HTTP endpoint is expected to keep supplying rain audio. For a finite recording, EOF may simply mean the file ended. Reconnecting does not promise seamless continuation or recovery at the exact previous audio position.
TCP or TLS connection errors
-reconnect_on_network_error 1 enables retries for TCP/TLS errors during connection. It addresses that connection stage, not every error that can arise later in decoding or writing the output.

Streamed or non-seekable input errors
-reconnect_streamed 1 allows reconnects on errors with streamed or non-seekable input. This is separate from the setting for EOF and from retries triggered by TCP/TLS connection errors.
HTTP status responses
For status codes the source may return temporarily, add -reconnect_on_http_error with only the statuses you intend to retry. The documented syntax accepts comma-separated codes or categories, such as 503 or 5xx. For example, if the provider’s documented behavior makes server errors temporary, you could add -reconnect_on_http_error 5xx before -i. Avoid retrying every client error blindly; a persistent request or authorization error is unlikely to be fixed by repeated attempts.

Retry delays and limits
-reconnect_delay_max N caps the retry delay in seconds. It does not by itself specify an unlimited retry policy. You can also use -reconnect_max_retries N to cap attempts and -reconnect_delay_total_max N to cap total reconnect delay. Choose values to fit how long you can tolerate silence and the source’s recovery behavior.
-respect_retry_after 1 honors a server-provided Retry-After value; FFmpeg’s documentation says this is enabled by default and notes its use with HTTP 429 and 503 responses. Current upstream HTTP source declares reconnect_max_retries unset, reconnect_delay_total_max as 256 seconds, and reconnect_delay_max as 120 seconds. These are implementation defaults, not guarantees for every release or custom build; check the binary actually running your stream.

Diagnose the command in order
- Separate input from output. Inspect the complete FFmpeg command and the URL scheme for each leg. The options above concern HTTP input handling. If the failing connection is an output or uses a different protocol, consult that protocol’s documentation rather than applying HTTP flags by assumption.
- Classify the log message. Look for whether the failure is a connection/TCP/TLS error, an HTTP status response, EOF, a demux or decoder error, or a problem writing the output. An HTTP status retry setting cannot fix an output write failure, for example.
- Decide what EOF means for this source. Establish whether the URL serves an endless/live feed or a finite audio file. Enable
-reconnect_at_eof 1only if reaching the end should trigger another request. - Set a recovery budget. Choose the maximum delay, attempt count, and total retry delay deliberately. A server’s
Retry-Afterresponse may also affect timing. A short delay limit may cause retries to end before a source recovers; a longer policy can mean a longer outage before the stream resumes. - Verify the installed FFmpeg options. Run
ffmpeg -versionand inspect local help withffmpeg -h protocol=http. Upstream documentation and source may differ from an older package or a custom build. - Plan for process exits. Protocol-level retries do not guarantee that FFmpeg stays alive through failures outside HTTP reconnect handling. If the process exits on another kind of error, process supervision may be needed; the right supervisor depends on your operating system and how the stream is launched.
What reconnect flags cannot establish
Reconnect settings control attempts to re-open an input connection. They do not prove that the source will become available, that audio resumes without a gap, or that playback returns to the exact prior position. They also do not diagnose a specific error without the command, logs, URL protocol, and installed FFmpeg version. If the issue persists, preserve the complete command and the surrounding error output, redact credentials or tokens in URLs, and classify the failure before changing more flags.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube rain-sounds stream rather than debugging a local FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
