First identify which program is reading the playlist: FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, an HLS .m3u8 manifest, or a YouTube playlist handled by a downloader such as yt-dlp. They fail at different layers, and no single FFmpeg flag reliably skips every bad entry. -fflags +discardcorrupt can discard damaged packets that FFmpeg has read; it does not repair a missing file, stale URL, malformed manifest, or entry that will not open.
Identify what “playlist” means in your command
Start with the exact command and the first FFmpeg error, then inspect the input supplied after -i. A process exiting does not, by itself, prove that a playlist item is corrupt.
| What the command reads | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
-f concat -i list.txt |
The local concat-demuxer list, its paths or URLs, and the media files it names. |
An .m3u8 URL or file |
The HLS manifest and the referenced segments; identify whether the failing request is for the manifest or a segment. |
| A YouTube playlist URL given to yt-dlp | The downloader’s playlist handling and the particular video or format it is processing. FFmpeg may be involved only in handling or merging downloaded media. |
These are distinct workflows, not interchangeable meanings of “playlist.” The FFmpeg documentation describes the concat demuxer as reading a sequence of files and directives; its FAQ distinguishes the concat demuxer, concat filter, and concat protocol. The yt-dlp FAQ notes that YouTube can provide separate audio and video formats and that FFmpeg can be used to merge them. That context does not establish that yt-dlp is part of your own pipeline.
Capture the first failure and isolate the item
- Keep the complete command and first error. Record the FFmpeg version, the input type, the first error rather than only the final “exiting” message, and any HTTP status or failing path shown. The appropriate remedy depends on those details.
- Check whether the same entry fails again. A repeatable failure points toward inspecting that entry or its source. If different items fail on different runs, a transient condition such as network instability is also plausible. This is a troubleshooting heuristic, not proof of cause; see the FFmpeg-user mailing-list discussion.
- Test the suspicious input alone. Use the same FFmpeg build and, where relevant, the same headers, credentials, and network path. For HLS, inspect the manifest and test the referenced segment independently. For a local concat list, back it up, temporarily remove or comment out the suspect entry, and check whether later valid entries process.
- Restore the list and fix the source of the bad entry. Confirm that the path exists or the URL is current and reachable, and that manifest syntax and segment references are valid. If entries are generated automatically, validate them before adding them to the playlist.
Choose a remedy for the failure layer
| Approach | Targets | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Validate or filter playlist entries | Missing, stale, or invalid paths and URLs | You need to change the playlist generator or add a wrapper step that checks entries. |
-fflags +discardcorrupt |
Corrupted packets that FFmpeg can read | May discard damaged content; does not open or skip a missing or invalid entry. |
| HTTP reconnect options | Selected HTTP connection interruptions, EOF cases, or HTTP errors | Applies to relevant protocol failures; cannot make an invalid playlist reference valid. |
| Re-encode or use the concat filter | Inputs with incompatible stream layouts when concatenation is required | Requires more processing and re-encoding can reduce quality compared with stream copy. |
Damaged packets: try discardcorrupt only when it fits
FFmpeg’s Formats Documentation describes the input flag discardcorrupt as “Discard corrupted packets.” Put the flag before the relevant input:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -fflags +discardcorrupt -i INPUT [output options] OUTPUT
Replace INPUT and the output arguments with those for your pipeline. This is an example of flag placement, not a universal recovery command. The option concerns packets that can be read and identified as corrupt; it does not tell FFmpeg to skip a concat-list line that cannot be opened or repair a broken HLS reference. Discarding packets can also mean losing media content around the damage.
Transport interruptions: use reconnect settings selectively
For FFmpeg’s native HTTP protocol, the Protocols Documentation lists options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, and reconnect_delay_max, along with retry and delay limits. Choose options based on the observed HTTP or connection failure and the protocol in use; do not assume every option applies to every input. Reconnection retries transport requests. It cannot correct a malformed playlist or a stale segment URL.

Concat inputs: check streams and timing
When using the concat demuxer, verify that the files have compatible stream layouts. FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer documentation says the files must have the same streams. Check the listed durations too: incorrect durations can shift later timestamps or create playback artifacts. If the inputs do not have compatible formats or codecs, stream-copy concatenation may not be suitable; consider a re-encode or a concat-filter workflow instead. The FFmpeg FAQ explains when the concat demuxer is useful to avoid re-encoding and distinguishes it from the filter and protocol approaches.
Common symptoms and fixes
- “No such file or directory” or an open failure at one concat item: Check that the path is correct, accessible to the FFmpeg process, and present when the job runs. Remove or replace the unavailable entry in the list producer; packet-discard flags do not address an item FFmpeg cannot open.
- An HTTP error or connection failure: Record the status and identify whether the request is for the manifest, a media segment, or another URL. If the failure is a transient HTTP transport problem, use suitable HTTP reconnect settings. If the reference itself is stale or invalid, update or filter the playlist entry.
- Corrupt packet messages but the input opens: Test
-fflags +discardcorrupton the relevant input and check the output for missing or damaged content. It is a lossy recovery measure, not a repair of the source. - Later output has timestamp jumps or artifacts: For concat-demuxer use, verify each file’s stream layout and declared duration. Incorrect durations can affect timestamps in subsequent files.
- Failures move among entries between runs: Compare the first error and HTTP status for each run, then test the affected source independently. Network instability is one possibility, but varying failures alone do not prove it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your actual goal is keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock from recordings, StreamNeo takes a different approach from repairing a local FFmpeg playlist: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
