OBS Studio is the best free starting point for a nonstop YouTube birdsong stream if you can leave a computer and its internet connection running. It is free, open-source software for Windows, Mac and Linux, and lets you mix audio with a still image or looped visual. It is not a way to keep streaming after you turn off the computer: for that, you need cloud playout, and free cloud allowances may be limited.

For the free local route, download OBS from the OBS Project. For cloud operation, compare the actual continuous-use allowance and price rather than treating a limited free tier as 24/7 service.
Set up a prepared birdsong loop in OBS
- Prepare the media. Have the audio recording and a still image or looped visual ready. Use files you have permission to stream and show. If you are capturing birds live, connect an appropriate microphone; a microphone is not needed for a prepared recording.
- Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use the wizard to establish basic streaming settings for your system and connection. OBS does not provide a universal bitrate that is safe for every connection, so avoid choosing a bitrate your upload connection cannot sustain.
- Create a scene. In the Scenes panel, add a scene for the birdsong stream. Add an audio source for the prepared recording and an image or video source for the visual. Arrange the visual in the preview and check the audio mixer while the file plays. Exact source names and available controls can vary with operating system and OBS version.
- Make the audio loop. Open the recording source’s properties and enable looping if the source offers that control. Play through the end once during setup to confirm it returns to the beginning without an unwanted gap or silence. If you are using a live microphone, check its meter and listen for clipping, wind or handling noise instead of enabling a file loop.
- Connect YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream setup and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key using the available option. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. The precise YouTube eligibility steps and labels can change, so follow the current prompts shown in your account.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start the stream, check that YouTube receives it, confirm the video is visible and the birdsong is audible, and monitor OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators. Do not assume that a successful start guarantees uninterrupted operation.
- Prevent predictable local interruptions. Keep the computer powered, prevent sleep, and plan for power, network and application interruptions. A local OBS stream stops if the computer shuts down or loses its connection; it is not independent of your home setup.
What “nonstop” means with a local computer
OBS can keep sending a prepared scene while it and the computer are running, but it does not remove the computer or internet connection from the chain. The OBS Help Portal explains that dropped frames can result from an unstable connection or a connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard for a starting configuration, then watch the stream indicators under real operating conditions rather than assuming a bitrate based on resolution alone.
- Computer sleeps or restarts: the stream may stop until the machine and OBS are running again.
- Power or internet fails: OBS cannot send the stream while the local equipment or connection is unavailable.
- Connection cannot sustain the bitrate: dropped frames or an unstable stream may result; lower settings or improve the connection if the issue persists.
- Application or platform interruption: monitor the stream and be prepared to restart it. Do not promise a fixed uptime or unattended recovery from a local setup.
Use recordings and visuals you have rights to stream
YouTube says, “Music and sound effects from the YouTube Audio Library are copyright-safe.” That statement applies to the Audio Library, not to every birdsong recording that sounds natural. YouTube says only Audio Library music and effects are known to it as copyright-safe, and it disclaims responsibility for issues involving material described as royalty-free on other channels or libraries. Some Audio Library items require Creative Commons attribution in the video description; check the specific item’s terms.

A recording of birds may still be owned by the person who captured it or subject to a license. Confirm that your permission covers continuous livestreaming, any saved replay, and the image or video used on screen. The Audio Library guidance does not establish that it contains a birdsong recording.

Costs and practical trade-offs
- OBS: the software is free and open source. Your local setup still requires a computer and an internet connection available for the stream; this article does not establish hardware requirements or a hardware cost.
- Streamlabs: its tools include free and paid offerings, but the reviewed source does not verify a free 24/7 prerecorded-loop feature.
- Upstream: the reviewed page lists a free allowance of 24 streaming hours per month and unlimited one-stream use at $30/month. That is not a free nonstop plan, and the commercial offer can change.

Troubleshooting common problems
- YouTube receives no stream: check that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube service and that the stream key is current and entered correctly. If you reset the key in YouTube, update OBS with the replacement.
- Audio is missing: verify the recording source is enabled, its meter moves in OBS, and the correct output/source is selected. Check the stream itself, not only local monitoring.
- The recording stops at the end: confirm looping is enabled for the audio source and test through the file’s end before leaving the stream unattended.
- Dropped frames increase: the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Use the OBS wizard for basic settings, then reduce the bitrate or stream settings if your connection cannot maintain them.
- The local stream stops when unattended: check power, sleep settings, network stability and whether OBS remains open. A cloud playout service is the relevant alternative if the computer cannot stay on.
- A copyright claim or restriction appears: review rights for the recording and visual, and confirm any attribution requirements. The Audio Library assurance does not automatically cover recordings sourced elsewhere.
