You can schedule the live event in YouTube Studio and use OBS Studio with a VLC Video source to control what plays: put the long videos and short playlist in the desired order, then turn on Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. YouTube schedules the event; OBS sends the actual video feed. This is not a setting that rotates videos already uploaded to your channel.
What you need before scheduling
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and meets YouTube’s stated minimum age requirement of 16 for live streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will run the stream. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS documents the media-source requirements and controls.
- Local copies of the longer videos and shorter playlist items, arranged in the playback sequence you intend to broadcast.
- Permission to broadcast every video and its audio. A live broadcast does not remove copyright obligations; YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance also calls attention to rights for media such as trailers.
- A computer, stable internet connection, and power that can remain available for the full time you want to stream. A playlist loop repeats media; it does not keep the encoder or connection alive if either stops.
Build the playback sequence in OBS
- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the live program. Add a source with Sources → + → VLC Video. If VLC Video is not listed, install VLC and restart OBS.
- In the source properties, add the local media files in the order you want them to play. Place the longer videos and the short playlist items directly into one list in the intended sequence—for example, long documentary, short playlist item one, short playlist item two, then the next long documentary.
- Leave shuffle off if the files must play in their configured order. Turn on Loop Playlist when the complete list should start again after its final item. If you instead use a single-file Media Source, use that source’s own Loop option; that repeats one file, not a multi-file rotation.
- Check the scene preview and audio, and make sure the source is visible in the scene. Do a private or unlisted rehearsal to check that files advance in the desired order and audio levels are usable before announcing the schedule.
The VLC playlist is a single ordered sequence. If you need a different pattern—such as the short playlist between every pair of long videos—include each item in that pattern in the list in the exact order it should recur. Loop Playlist repeats the whole list, not a separate playlist between automatically detected long videos.
Schedule the YouTube event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream. Choose to reuse settings or create a new stream, then set the title, privacy, and other event details. YouTube’s scheduled live-stream guidance explains upcoming streams and viewer reminders.
- Open the scheduled stream’s settings in Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the server URL and key from that scheduled event. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send video to your channel.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming video preview in YouTube Live Control Room. When the preview is ready, select Go Live in YouTube to start the scheduled event for viewers.
- When the broadcast should end, stop the event in YouTube and stop the OBS stream. Confirm the event has ended rather than assuming that stopping playlist playback also ends the YouTube broadcast.
The scheduled event provides the planned start and viewer-facing upcoming page; the encoder supplies the live picture and sound. Scheduling alone does not start playback from your channel’s uploaded-video library.
What “24/7” means in practice
OBS can keep repeating the media list, but it cannot by itself guarantee continuous availability. The computer must stay powered on, OBS must keep running, and the network and YouTube ingest must remain connected. If OBS closes or the connection drops, the playlist setting does not restart the encoder or restore the connection. Plan to monitor the stream and have a recovery procedure if interruptions matter.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, YouTube warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable, and you should not assume a complete archive. See YouTube’s DVR guidance and its encoder stream setup and archive guidance. A long-running broadcast is therefore not a substitute for keeping a separate copy of the source videos.
Choose between running OBS locally and using cloud hosting

For a local setup, OBS and VLC provide the documented playlist-loop controls. A cloud service can remove the need to leave a home computer running, but compare the specific service’s capabilities and terms rather than assuming all hosting works the same way.
