To run OBS Studio portably on a dedicated Windows PC, download the OBS ZIP build, extract it to a folder you control, place an empty portable_mode or portable_mode.txt file in the extracted root, and launch bin/64bit/obs64.exe. You can instead start that executable with --portable. Then add your video as a Media Source, enable Loop, configure the stream, and test the full startup path before leaving the PC unattended. Portable mode keeps OBS settings beside the application; it does not carry your video files along when you move the folder.
What OBS portable mode does—and what it does not do
OBS portable mode stores its configuration alongside the application rather than in the usual user configuration location. That can keep a dedicated streaming setup separate from another OBS installation or make the OBS folder easier to relocate. The documented portable-mode workflow is for Windows and the ZIP distribution; OBS says portable mode is not supported on macOS or Linux at this time. OBS Project: Running in Portable Mode
Portable mode does not bundle or relocate files referenced by a scene collection. The OBS Project states: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.” Keep the loop video at a stable location on the dedicated PC. If you move the OBS folder or use it on another computer, update the media paths or ensure the same paths exist there.
Set up OBS portable mode on Windows
- Get the ZIP distribution. Download the Windows ZIP build of OBS Studio from the official portable-mode instructions. Extract it to a folder you control, ideally within a user folder. Do not extract it into
Program Files. - Choose how to enable portable mode. For a persistent setup, create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txtin the extracted OBS root—the same folder that contains thebindirectory. Alternatively, omit the marker and launch OBS with the--portableargument. - Launch the 64-bit executable. Run
bin/64bit/obs64.exe. Confirm that the intended profile and scene collection load. Configuration for this portable instance is kept with the application. - Keep the media path stable. Store the loop file somewhere that will remain available under the same path, such as a dedicated media folder on the PC. A portable OBS folder alone is not a self-contained copy of your scene collection’s media.
Loop one video or play a playlist
Loop a single local video
- In OBS, create or select the scene for the stream.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add a Media Source.
- In the source properties, choose the local video file and enable Loop, then confirm.
- Check the preview and audio meters. Let the file reach its end and verify that it starts again as expected on this PC.
OBS documents the Loop setting; it does not promise gapless playback for every file and computer. Check for a pause or other playback issue during your own test. OBS Project: Media Sources

Loop multiple files
For an ordered playlist, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist in its properties. This requires VLC to be installed. Match the application bitness: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. VLC Video also offers shuffle and visibility behavior, so check those settings if the sequence or display behavior matters to your program. OBS Project: Media Sources
Use a Media Source when the program is one file. Use VLC Video when the program needs a multi-file playlist and you accept VLC as an additional dependency.
Configure the stream before unattended use
OBS does not establish one bitrate that is right for every stream. Choose output settings within both your upload capacity and the streaming service’s limits, and verify the actual result with a test broadcast. Select the intended service, server, and stream key in OBS, and confirm the resolution, frame rate, and audio you intend to send. OBS’s Quick Start guidance recommends checking output settings and running a short test before going live. Its overview notes that bitrate depends on upload speed and service limits, and identifies automatic reconnect as an Advanced setting; the cited guidance does not provide a universal bitrate or an uptime guarantee.
- Confirm the correct OBS profile, scene collection, scene, and media source are active.
- Check that the video and intended audio appear in the preview and that the audio meters respond.
- Set the stream service, server, and stream key, then review output settings against the service’s requirements and your available upload capacity.
- Run a short test and verify playback, sound, and the stream at its destination before relying on the setup.
For a continuous YouTube program, also confirm that you have the rights to the video and audio you broadcast and that the content follows YouTube’s current rules. A looping file does not remove copyright or channel-policy obligations.

Start OBS with a chosen setup or request streaming at launch
OBS documents command-line options for portable mode and for selecting configuration at launch. You can also request streaming startup. A command may follow this pattern, with values adjusted to match your installation and configuration:
"C:pathtoOBSbin64bitobs64.exe" --portable --collection "Collection Name" --profile "Profile Name" --scene "Scene Name" --startstreaming
Use only the options you need. The --portable flag selects portable mode; --collection, --profile, and --scene select the corresponding configuration; --startstreaming requests that OBS begin streaming. The collection, profile, and scene names must match those in your OBS setup. The launch options are documented by OBS at OBS Project: Launch Parameters.

For a Windows shortcut or scheduled launch, OBS’s instructions say to set the working directory—the shortcut’s Start in field—to the folder containing obs64.exe. Test the exact command and working directory on the target PC. These OBS launch controls do not, by themselves, establish a complete unattended-computer setup: auto-login, recovery after a power failure, and a watchdog are separate Windows administration concerns not covered by the cited launch instructions.
Preflight checks for a dedicated loop-stream PC
- Start the portable executable and confirm the intended profile and scene collection load.
- Verify that the media path resolves and that playback returns to the beginning when the file ends.
- For a playlist, confirm VLC is installed in the matching 64-bit or 32-bit version and that the playlist order and loop behavior are correct.
- Check the audio meters and listen to the intended audio at the stream destination.
- Confirm the service, server, stream key, output settings, and available upload capacity.
- Run the exact shortcut or scheduled task you plan to use, including its working directory, before relying on unattended operation.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
OBS opens but does not use portable settings
Check that the marker file is in the extracted root, not inside bin, and that its name is exactly portable_mode or portable_mode.txt. If using the launch flag instead, confirm the command passes --portable to the correct obs64.exe.
The video source is missing or shows an error after moving OBS
The scene collection’s media path is separate from the OBS configuration folder. Restore the file to its prior path or edit the source to point to the file’s current location. Keep the video at a stable path on a dedicated PC.
The playlist source is unavailable
Install VLC and make sure its bitness matches OBS. A 64-bit OBS installation needs 64-bit VLC. Reopen the VLC Video source properties and confirm the playlist files and loop option.

The scheduled launch uses the wrong profile or fails to find files
Check the names supplied to --collection, --profile, and --scene, and set the scheduled task or shortcut’s working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Test that exact launch method interactively before depending on it unattended.
The stream does not start or drops
Recheck the selected service, server, and stream key, then confirm the output settings are compatible with the service and your upload capacity. OBS identifies automatic reconnect as an Advanced setting, but neither that setting nor a launch parameter is a promise of uninterrupted operation. Run a test and monitor the stream at its destination.
