To schedule a YouTube playlist rotation on Ubuntu, write a script that uses the YouTube Data API to perform the exact change you want, then call that script from the intended user’s crontab. Cron only runs the command on a schedule; it does not manage playlists or decide what “rotation” means.
Decide what “rotation” means before scheduling it
YouTube provides playlist and playlist-item API methods, but no built-in playlist-rotation operation. Your script must define the policy: for example, moving an existing item to another position, cycling items through positions, or removing an item and adding another. These are different operations and can produce different results, especially when a video appears more than once. See Google’s PlaylistItems API reference.
Reorder an existing item
If the goal is to change the position of an item that is already in the playlist, use the API’s update operation and set the desired position. This changes the existing playlist entry rather than deleting it and creating a new one. Define how the script chooses the source and destination positions, and what should happen when the playlist is empty or has fewer entries than expected.
Remove and reinsert an item
If the intended policy is to remove an entry and add a resource, use the delete and insert methods. The insert reference describes its action as: “Adds a resource to a playlist.” This approach is not equivalent to reordering: insertion creates a playlist item, and a video can appear multiple times if the script does not check for duplicates. For deletion, pass the playlist-item ID returned by the API—not the video ID.

Prepare authorized YouTube API access

Use a Google account to create a project in Google Cloud Console and enable the YouTube Data API v3. Google’s YouTube Data API overview describes the project and authorization prerequisites.

Authorize the account that owns or can edit the playlist through OAuth 2.0. Playlist writes require an applicable OAuth scope; a read-only API key does not authorize insert, update, or delete operations. The documented insert scopes include
youtube,youtube.force-ssl, andyoutubepartner. Use the scope appropriate to the operations your script performs. -
Choose a Google-supported client library and follow the current OAuth instructions for the installed version. The exact token storage and refresh lifecycle depends on that library and setup; do not assume a one-time interactive login will be sufficient for unattended runs.

Store credentials so other local users cannot read them. Test that the script can refresh authorization without an interactive prompt, using the same Ubuntu account that will own the crontab.

Build and test the rotation script
Implement the playlist policy in the script before adding a schedule. A safe run should identify the playlist, fetch its current entries, make the decision you specified, and perform only the required write. Use the playlist-item IDs returned by the API for item-specific operations. Avoid a delete-and-insert sequence unless that behavior is actually intended.
Account for API quota
Google’s API references list playlistItems.list at 1 quota unit per call and playlistItems.insert and playlistItems.delete at 50 units each. Google’s overview reports a default combined allocation of 10,000 units per day for most endpoints. These are documented defaults, not a guarantee for every project: allocations and quota policy can differ or change. Check the project’s quota before choosing a frequent schedule, and account for every list page and write call the script may make.

Run it manually first
Run the script from a terminal as the intended crontab user. Confirm that it can access its credentials, identify the expected playlist state, make the intended change, and exit with a useful status. Test cases should include an empty or short playlist, a missing target item, repeated video IDs, and an API or authorization failure. Do not schedule a destructive operation until its behavior for these cases is explicit.
Schedule the script in the intended user’s crontab
Open the crontab for the account that should run the job with crontab -e. Do not use root’s crontab unless the script and credentials are deliberately configured for root. Cron runs a user’s jobs as the owner of that crontab, and it supplies a non-interactive environment. Ubuntu’s Noble cron manual documents the five schedule fields and per-user execution.

/home/ubuntu/logsin advance and ensure the crontab owner can write to it. The redirection captures standard output and errors for later inspection. - Configure required environment: cron is non-interactive. Put needed environment settings in the script or crontab, and do not depend on shell startup files.
- Choose the time zone deliberately: cron time-zone behavior depends on the installed cron package and Ubuntu release. The Noble manual documents
CRON_TZ; the Ubuntu Jammy manual notes thatTZaffects the command environment, not the schedule. Confirm the manual for the installed release before relying on a timezone directive.
The Noble manual also documents defaults such as SHELL, LOGNAME, and HOME. If the script relies on a particular home directory or shell, set that expectation explicitly rather than assuming your interactive environment is reproduced.
Check that the scheduled job ran

Run the command manually as the crontab owner and resolve any credential, path, or permission problems first.

After the scheduled time, inspect the redirected log file for the script’s output and errors.

If the log is not created or cron appears not to have launched the command, check the system cron log or journal for the Ubuntu release in use. Cron output may also be mailed depending on local mail configuration, so a file log is usually easier to retrieve.

Verify the playlist itself in YouTube after a run. A successful process exit alone does not establish that the playlist ended in the intended order.
Troubleshooting common failures

Do not rely on @reboot as proof that networking or OAuth dependencies are ready: startup jobs can run before other services are available. If the script requires those dependencies, build an appropriate readiness check into the job rather than assuming boot order.
