To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an Amazon Lightsail instance in Mumbai, run an encoder on the instance, give it the video file and the YouTube ingest URL and stream key, then start the encoder. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room and select Go live. The instance sends the stream to YouTube; viewers watch the YouTube event.
This guide covers the YouTube setup, encoder settings, Lightsail networking and the practical limits of using a cloud instance for video encoding. It does not give a supposedly tested FFmpeg command: the exact end-to-end command and installation steps depend on the instance’s operating system and were not verified.
Before you begin
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Check that live streaming is enabled before preparing the instance.
- A prerecorded video file that the encoder can read from the Lightsail instance. Upload it to the instance or make it accessible to the encoder.
- A Linux/Unix Lightsail instance with an encoder installed, plus enough CPU capacity and stable outbound bandwidth for the settings you choose.
- The ingest server URL and stream key for the YouTube event. Treat the key like a password.
Create the YouTube event and get its stream details
- In YouTube Studio, open Create and select Go Live.
- Create a new stream or select the scheduled event you intend to use. In Live Control Room, find the encoder connection details and copy the ingest server URL and stream key for that event.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in your encoder configuration.
- For a scheduled event, plan to start the encoder first, confirm that the incoming preview appears, and then select Go live in Live Control Room.
YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, logs, or shared configuration files.
Prepare the Lightsail instance
- Connect to the Linux/Unix instance over SSH. Restrict SSH access to the source addresses that need it rather than exposing it broadly; AWS recommends limiting SSH source addresses.
- Install an encoder suitable for the instance’s operating system and release. Lightsail allows software to be installed, but package names and installation commands differ by distribution and version.
- Place the video file where the encoder can read it. Confirm the file path, available disk space, and that the file is readable by the account that will run the encoder.
- Check CPU and outbound network capacity using the actual video and intended settings. Do not assume a particular Lightsail bundle can encode a given resolution or frame rate reliably.
Configure the encoder for YouTube
Use an encoder that can read the video and publish to the YouTube ingest URL with the event’s stream key. FFmpeg supports this general input-to-output workflow, but the exact command depends on the input format, chosen encoding behavior, and installed FFmpeg build; no command here is represented as tested.

| Setting | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| Protocol | Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it. |
| Video codec | H.264, consistent with YouTube’s general encoder recommendations. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3, consistent with YouTube’s general encoder recommendations. |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended by YouTube for encoder delivery. |
| Frame rate | Match the source where sensible; YouTube’s general recommendations support up to 60 fps. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds is recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| Video bitrate | For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 10 Mbps as its recommended video bitrate. Other resolutions and frame rates need settings appropriate to those output parameters. |
Resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and any filters all affect the CPU load. If you encode rather than pass through a compatible source, the instance must sustain that work continuously. Keep the total outgoing stream bitrate below the instance’s stable outbound throughput. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate; this is headroom for the outgoing connection, not a substitute for sufficient CPU capacity.
Start the stream and verify playback
- Start the encoder with the video input, YouTube ingest URL, stream key, and chosen output settings.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check that video is moving and audio is present before starting a scheduled event.
- For a scheduled event, select Go live after the preview is ready. Monitor stream health and playback during the broadcast.
- When finished, stop the encoder and end the event in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams lasting under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Which Lightsail port do you need to open?
For this publishing flow, the instance initiates an outbound connection to YouTube. Lightsail’s instance firewall filters traffic arriving at the instance’s public IP; AWS says it does not control traffic flowing out, and that its firewalls allow all outbound traffic. So you ordinarily do not need to open an inbound RTMP port for the encoder to send a stream to YouTube. Keep only the inbound access you actually need, particularly for SSH. Lightsail’s IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules are independent.

Choose a host that can sustain the encode
A Lightsail plan bundles fixed vCPU, memory, SSD storage, and transfer allowance, but those bundle specifications do not establish that a particular instance can encode your particular video. Workload varies with codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, and whether hardware acceleration is available. AWS specifically recommends EC2 for applications that consistently use high CPU, such as video encoding.
| Option | What it suits | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Lightsail | A simpler fixed-plan instance that can run an installed encoder. | Test the actual file and settings; no Mumbai-specific performance result or suitable bundle size is established here. |
| EC2 | Workloads needing more control over compute resources; AWS identifies it as the recommendation for consistently high-CPU encoding. | The appropriate instance and cost depend on the workload; no price comparison is established here. |
Run a representative test and watch CPU use and YouTube stream health. If the instance cannot sustain the workload, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate where appropriate, remove costly filters, or move the encoding job to a more suitable compute service. Mumbai is the instance location in this setup; it does not by itself guarantee a particular encode performance or transfer cost.

Troubleshooting
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is running, that it uses the ingest URL and key for the correct event, and that the file path is valid. If the key may be compromised or mistyped, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- The preview appears, but the scheduled event is not live: The encoder feed and the scheduled event’s go-live action are distinct. Once the preview is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room.
- The stream buffers or loses quality: Check total outbound bitrate and available stable bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Lower the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the setting.
- The stream drops under load: Check CPU use and stream health with the actual encode. Reduce processing demands or use a host better suited to sustained high-CPU encoding; AWS points to EC2 for that workload category.
- The encoder cannot read the recording: Verify the file exists at the configured path, is accessible to the encoder’s running account, and is in a format supported by the installed encoder build.
- You are considering opening an inbound port: This encoder-to-YouTube publishing connection is outbound, and Lightsail allows outbound traffic by default. Do not expose an inbound publishing port unless a separate service genuinely requires it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain an encoder on a Lightsail instance, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
