For continuous background music under an OBS video playlist, add the audio as a separate Media Source, enable Loop, and keep that source active while the playlist plays. If you want to hear only the continuous audio bed, mute the playlist source in the OBS mixer. If you mean that each clip’s own soundtrack must transition seamlessly into the next, OBS’s documentation does not guarantee gapless VLC playlist audio; test the boundaries or prepare one continuous audio asset instead.
Set up a looping audio bed
- Add the audio file: In your OBS scene, add a Media Source and select the audio file. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among its supported formats. See the OBS Project Media Sources guide.
- Enable Loop: Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. This repeats the file when playback completes.
- Keep the audio source active: Leave the Media Source in the scene during the video playlist. Adjust its level in the OBS mixer to balance the background audio against other sources.
- Mute the playlist source if needed: If you do not want the clips’ embedded sound playing over the audio bed, mute the VLC Video source in the mixer.
- Test clip changes: Record a short sample containing several playlist items, then listen at each boundary for gaps, overlaps, or silence at the end or start of the audio file.
This approach uses OBS’s separate source controls to keep a looping file playing alongside the playlist. The documentation does not promise gapless transitions from one VLC playlist item to another, so test the scene you intend to use.
Configure the video playlist
OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist. Add or retain that source in the scene and select the video items you want it to play. Its documented options include playlist looping and shuffling, visibility behavior, caching, and audio-track settings. These playlist controls do not establish that clip audio will be sample-continuous between items.
- VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. Match its architecture to OBS: install 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- Keep both the VLC Video source and the separate looping Media Source in the scene for the playlist’s duration.
- Choose whether the audio file should repeat independently or whether you want a finite audio file to end. Test playback in the scene rather than assuming the playlist and audio source will end together.
If you need the clips’ own sound to flow seamlessly
The reviewed OBS documentation explains that VLC Video plays playlists, but does not say that transitions between playlist items are gapless. Changing a playlist setting therefore cannot be relied on to remove every boundary gap. If seamless clip-native sound matters, consider joining or editing the audio into a single continuous track, or preparing a combined media asset in an editor, then test the finished file in OBS. These are practical alternatives, not OBS-specific guarantees.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS also lists the community Media Playlist Source 0.1.3 plugin as an alternative for playlist management. The listing says it uses Media Source internally and supports playlist editing and item selection; it lists OBS 30.0.0 as the minimum version and Windows, macOS, and Linux as supported platforms. Audio-track and subtitle selection are not supported. The listing does not claim gapless audio, so treat it as a playlist-management option, not a fix for audio cutouts.
Choose the setup for your goal
| What you need | Practical approach | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous background music across changing videos | Separate Media Source with Loop enabled | Test in your scene; keep the source active and mute VLC audio if it should not be heard. |
| Each video’s soundtrack to continue seamlessly into the next | Prepare a continuous audio track or edited asset and test it | OBS’s reviewed documentation does not guarantee gapless VLC playlist transitions. |
| More playlist editing and item selection | Consider the Media Playlist Source plugin | Its listing does not establish gapless playback; audio-track and subtitle selection are unsupported. |
