How to Schedule OBS to Start a YouTube Loop Stream Automatically

YouTube scheduling does not launch OBS. Set up a repeating source, schedule the broadcast, and choose whether YouTube auto-starts when OBS sends video.

You can schedule a YouTube broadcast and loop a video in OBS, but scheduling the broadcast does not launch OBS for you. At the scheduled time, your computer-side setup must start OBS and send the stream; YouTube’s documented workflow then asks you to click Go live after the preview appears. YouTube’s auto-start setting can remove that final click once video reaches the scheduled broadcast, but it does not open OBS.

What “automatic” means in this setup

There are two separate jobs: YouTube Studio schedules the broadcast, while OBS provides the encoder feed and looping video. Scheduling in Studio creates an upcoming broadcast viewers can find and set reminders for; it does not schedule an OBS process to open or begin streaming.

For a truly unattended start, you need a computer-side launcher to start OBS at the chosen time, as well as a YouTube broadcast configured to start automatically when video arrives. The steps below cover the OBS and YouTube setup. The specific operating-system task-scheduler configuration, unattended-login requirements, and restart behavior depend on your computer and are not covered here.

Set up the video to repeat in OBS

Loop one video with Media Source

  1. In OBS, select the scene you want to use.
  2. In the Sources panel, click + and choose Media Source.
  3. Create or select a source, then browse to the local video file.
  4. Enable Loop in the source properties and confirm. OBS will play the file again when playback completes.

Loop multiple videos with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC on the computer running OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. In the Sources panel, click + and choose VLC Video.
  3. Add the files to the playlist in the source properties.
  4. Leave Loop Playlist enabled so the playlist repeats after its final item.

Use Media Source for a single file and VLC Video for a playlist. OBS’s source documentation describes these as distinct looping options.

Schedule the YouTube broadcast

  1. Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live.
  2. Choose Manage, then Schedule Stream.
  3. Choose to reuse settings or create a new stream, and complete the broadcast details.
  4. Save the schedule. The upcoming broadcast can be promoted, and viewers can set reminders.

Connect OBS and go live at airtime

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the scheduled broadcast and locate its stream URL and stream key.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service if available, or configure the server and stream key using the values from YouTube.
  3. At airtime, start streaming in OBS. YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream workflow is to wait until the encoder preview appears in Live Control Room, then click Go live.
  4. Confirm the live preview and status in Live Control Room. The OBS feed supplies the loop; YouTube controls the broadcast state and audience-facing live session.

Decide whether YouTube should auto-start the broadcast

YouTube’s Live Streaming API defines enableAutoStart as starting a broadcast automatically when video begins arriving on its bound live stream. When this option is enabled for the scheduled broadcast, OBS can send the feed and YouTube can start the broadcast without the separate Go live click. It still does not launch OBS at a scheduled time.

If you rely on this behavior, check the setting for the specific broadcast rather than assuming every scheduled stream starts automatically. YouTube’s documented standard workflow still describes starting the encoder, waiting for preview, and clicking Go live. API behavior and Studio controls are separate from the computer-side task that starts OBS.

How the stream ends and is archived

Stopping the encoder feed and ending the YouTube broadcast are related but separately controlled. YouTube’s API describes auto-stop as occurring around one minute after the owner stops sending video. With auto-stop disabled, the OBS guide says a scheduled broadcast can be ended in Live Control Room; if you end it there, stop OBS as well so it does not keep sending video.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is YouTube’s stated threshold, not a guarantee for every broadcast configuration or a statement about later policy changes.

Common problems and fixes

  • The scheduled time arrives but OBS stays closed: That is expected from YouTube scheduling alone. A separate computer-side launcher must start OBS; scheduling the broadcast does not do it.
  • OBS is streaming but the broadcast is not public: Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and click Go live under the documented workflow. If expecting automatic broadcast start, verify enableAutoStart for that scheduled broadcast.
  • The playlist source is missing or will not load: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  • The video stops after one play: Open the source properties and enable Loop for Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video.
  • The YouTube stream ends but OBS continues: Stop OBS after ending the broadcast in Live Control Room. Check the broadcast’s auto-stop setting if you expect YouTube to end after the encoder feed stops.
  • The automatic start is inconsistent: Verify the scheduled stream’s settings and whether OBS is actually sending video to the bound stream. YouTube’s auto-start applies when video starts arriving; it is not a clock-based OBS launcher.
