To run a 24/7 reggae radio stream on YouTube, prepare a playlist you have the rights to use, configure a live stream in YouTube Studio, and send the playlist’s audio and a visual feed through an encoder. With a self-hosted setup, the computer, power, and internet connection must remain available. You can instead upload your recordings and playlist to StreamNeo, add your YouTube stream key, and let it run from the cloud.

Before you build the stream: check eligibility and music rights

Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube says a creator needs a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to enable live streaming; streamers must be at least 16 years old. Check eligibility in the channel account before planning a launch. YouTube’s live-streaming help gives the current platform guidance.

Clear every track for live use

Do not assume that buying, downloading, or adding a song to a playlist gives you permission to broadcast it. Secure rights for the music and any artwork or other material in your program before going live. YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the video with a placeholder and warn you; if the content remains, it may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream.

A license alone may not prevent a disruption: YouTube says that licensed third-party content can still be interrupted when the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights owner through Content ID. If you plan to use copyright-protected music, YouTube for Artists advises coordinating with your label or distributor. Ask the rights owner about the required Content ID allowlisting process as well as the scope of your license.

Choose how to keep the stream running

Self-host with an encoder

An encoder sends your prepared audio-and-video program to YouTube. This gives you control over the visuals and the source material, but a locally hosted stream depends on the host computer, power, and internet connection staying available. YouTube documents encoder-based streaming as an option for creators who need a prepared program and overlays. The exact steps for making a playlist play continuously depend on your chosen software; YouTube’s general instructions do not establish a particular OBS playlist configuration or automatic-restart setup.

Run the playlist in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on. It is the first option to consider for an always-on stream: it runs from the cloud, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Set up a self-hosted stream with YouTube Studio and OBS

  1. Prepare the playlist and visuals. Assemble audio you are authorized to broadcast. Choose a visual output for the stream, such as artwork or other material you have permission to use. Confirm that your encoder can play the playlist continuously; the playlist-source and looping controls vary by software and are not specified in YouTube’s setup guidance.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube’s general live-stream guidance describes encoder streaming; the exact interface labels can change, so follow the current prompts in Live Control Room.
  3. Choose an ingestion protocol. Use the protocol and stream details shown for the event in Live Control Room. RTMP and HLS are distinct ingestion options. The HLS settings below apply only if you choose HLS; they are not universal settings for every encoder stream.
  4. Enter the stream details in OBS. Use the matching YouTube service/protocol and the stream key and server details supplied by Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. OBS is among the encoders YouTube lists as supporting HLS output.
  5. Configure the program output. Add the playlist audio source and a visual source, then check that both are present in the encoder preview. Test audio levels and confirm the playlist advances as intended. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not prescribe a specific audio-playlist plugin, loop setting, video resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, or automatic restart arrangement for this use case; use settings supported by your chosen encoder and the protocol shown in Live Control Room.
  6. Start the encoder and verify the live preview. Start sending the program from OBS, then check YouTube’s preview and status before sharing the stream. Watch for copyright warnings or interruptions, and confirm that the stream remains live after the first playlist transition.
  7. Keep the local system available. For a self-hosted 24/7 stream, keep the computer, power, network connection, and encoder session running. A restart or outage can stop the feed; the sources here do not establish a proven automatic recovery method for a locally configured OBS playlist.

HLS settings, if you choose HLS ingestion

YouTube’s HLS instructions apply only when HLS is selected in Live Control Room and the encoder supports HLS. YouTube specifies these HLS requirements and recommendations:

  • Use the HTTPS stream URL supplied by Live Control Room and an HLS-capable encoder.
  • Send segments of 1–4 seconds in TS format, with no byte ranges.
  • Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
  • Use HTTPS POST/PUT, with no encryption beyond HTTPS.
  • For stereo audio, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate.

YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Its HLS setup guidance covers creator setup; Google’s HLS ingestion documentation explains the media-playlist and segment sequence for encoder vendors. If your encoder has a YouTube HLS preset, use it rather than trying to implement the protocol manually.

Keep the stream compliant and diagnose interruptions

Content ID warning or placeholder

Likely cause: YouTube detected third-party content in the live program. What to do: Stop or replace the matched material and resolve the rights issue with the owner. If you have a license, ask the rights owner whether the channel must be allowlisted through Content ID; a license does not itself guarantee the stream will avoid interruption.

The stream stops when the computer or connection fails

Likely cause: A self-hosted encoder needs its host computer, power, and network connection. What to do: Restore the host and connection, then restart the encoder and verify the YouTube preview. Do not assume OBS will resume the stream or playlist automatically unless you have confirmed that behavior in your own setup.

HLS output is rejected or delayed

Likely cause: HLS-specific requirements may not be met, or the higher latency of HLS may be mistaken for a failed stream. What to do: Confirm the selected protocol in Live Control Room, use its HTTPS URL, check segment and playlist requirements, and allow for HLS’s higher latency relative to RTMP.

No audio or the playlist does not advance

Likely cause: The encoder’s audio source or playlist behavior is not configured as expected. What to do: Check the OBS preview and audio meters, confirm the intended source is active, and test playlist transitions before relying on a continuous broadcast. Playlist automation depends on the software and configuration; YouTube’s general encoder pages do not specify those controls.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want to avoid maintaining a computer and home connection for a continuous broadcast, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream. Upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service costs $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free first day.

What a self-hosted 24/7 stream will require

A computer is the straightforward hardware choice for a local encoder workflow, but no specific model or minimum specification is established here. Choose equipment based on the encoder and playlist software you intend to run, and test the complete setup before scheduling a long broadcast. The YouTube guidance cited above does not establish an archive-retention policy for continuous streams, so check current Live Control Room options if you need recordings or replay availability.
