Choose the output resolution and frame rate first, then set FFmpeg’s -b:v to YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for that format. Choose an x264 preset your VPS can sustain in real time: start faster if encoding falls behind, and try slower presets only when the instance has headroom. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest.
Choose resolution and frame rate before bitrate
YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate depends on both the incoming resolution and frame rate. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of required internet upload speed or proof that a particular VPS can encode at that rate. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table when configuring a stream because its guidance can change.

Set FFmpeg’s video bitrate correctly
FFmpeg’s -b:v option takes a video bitrate in bits per second. Thus, a 10 Mbps target is written as -b:v 10000000. This differs from x264’s own bitrate parameter, which uses kilobits per second. FFmpeg documents its options in the FFmpeg documentation and its encoder-specific options in the FFmpeg codecs documentation.

Build and adapt the FFmpeg command
This is a starting template for sending an existing video file to YouTube Live. It is not a tested command or a complete setting for every source, VPS, or stream format.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10000000
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://INGEST_ENDPOINT/STREAM_KEY"- Replace
input.mp4with the actual file path. The-reoption reads the input at its native rate rather than sending the file as fast as possible. - Set the output resolution and frame rate to match your intended stream. Then replace
10000000with the H.264 target for that format from YouTube’s table. In this example, the value corresponds to the recommended target for 1080p30. - Use
-c:v libx264to select x264 encoding, and choose the preset based on whether the VPS can keep up with the input.veryfastis only an illustrative starting point, not a universal optimum. - Replace the placeholder RTMPS endpoint and stream key with the ingest details from YouTube. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a repository, or share an unredacted command or log.
- Run a representative sustained stream and watch FFmpeg’s reported processing speed and any dropped frames. If it cannot keep pace, move to a faster preset or reduce the output workload; only test slower presets while CPU capacity remains available.
YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its settings can detect resolution and frame rate automatically; manual settings are also available through a custom stream key. See the YouTube LiveStreams API documentation for the custom-key behavior.

Choose an x264 preset by observed capacity
The preset is a speed-versus-compression-efficiency choice. Faster presets generally require less encoding work but are less compression-efficient; slower presets require more processing time. The right preset is the one the actual VPS can sustain for the intended content and output format while leaving operating headroom.
- If processing speed falls below real time or frames are dropped, first try a faster preset and confirm the output settings are still appropriate for the content.
- If the VPS consistently keeps pace with spare CPU capacity, test a slower preset and observe whether it continues to sustain real time.
- Repeat the check over a representative sustained run; a brief successful start does not establish long-run capacity.
No universal VPS size or preset-to-resolution mapping follows from these settings alone. Instance CPU model, allocated cores, sustained performance, and content complexity affect the result, so validate on the instance you intend to use rather than assuming a provider tier will be sufficient.
