You can run a prerecorded playlist as a YouTube Live stream from a Google Compute Engine (GCE) Linux VM by connecting three pieces: YouTube Live Control Room, an encoder that reads your authorized media and sends a continuous output, and YouTube’s ingest service, preferably over RTMPS. The VM can stay online without a home computer, but the playlist-reading and looping command depends on your encoder; do not assume a YouTube watch or playlist URL is itself a direct media input.
This guide covers the setup, stream configuration, operational checks, and cost decisions. The exact FFmpeg playlist-loop syntax is not established here, so use the selected encoder’s current documentation to verify that part before starting a production stream.
Before you start
Confirm that the YouTube channel can livestream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. You can use an encoder as the streaming method. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream and keep its stream URL and stream key available.
- A Linux VM in Google Compute Engine with enough CPU capacity for the output you intend to encode.
- Media files that you are authorized to stream, accessible to the VM through local storage or a mounted location.
- An encoder configured to read those files, produce continuous audio and video, and send the stream to YouTube.
- A way to monitor the encoder process, the VM, and YouTube’s incoming stream preview.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not commit it to public source control or show it in screenshots. YouTube’s current encoder instructions and controls are in Live Control Room.

How the GCE playlist stream works
The VM does not send a playlist to YouTube for YouTube to play. Instead, an encoder running on the VM reads media you have made accessible to it, creates the live output, and transmits that output to YouTube’s ingestion URL using the stream key. Live Control Room shows the incoming preview and lets you control the broadcast.
A YouTube playlist page is not necessarily a direct media source for an encoder. Confirm that your chosen software supports your media format, playlist ordering, repeat behavior, audio continuity, and restart behavior using its current primary documentation. Those details vary by encoder and configuration.
Prepare the YouTube live event
- Check eligibility. In YouTube Studio, confirm livestreaming is enabled for the channel and check for restrictions.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to set up the stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s secure configuration.
- Keep the key private. Avoid embedding it in a public script or repository. Restrict access to any configuration or secret storage that contains it.
- Plan the event’s duration. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. Do not assume one complete archive will be available for a continuous stream longer than 12 hours; plan recording and archive needs accordingly.
Create and prepare a Linux VM
Enable Compute Engine in the Google Cloud project, then create a Linux VM from a public image using Google Cloud’s VM creation instructions. Choose the machine size only after deciding your resolution, frame rate, and whether the encoder will perform software encoding. Encoding demand depends on those choices and your selected software, so there is no universally correct VM size.

Startup and repeatability
GCE supports startup scripts provided through VM metadata. They run as root when the VM boots and only run when network access is available. A startup script can automate repeatable installation and launch tasks, but make it safe to run again and protect its contents, especially if it contains credentials. Keep the stream key out of any script or metadata that could be exposed to people who should not have it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor if you need the encoder to restart after a process failure or VM reboot. The appropriate configuration depends on the encoder and operating system; verify the selected supervisor’s documentation rather than treating startup scripts alone as proof that a failed process will restart.
Network access
The encoder sends the stream outward to YouTube. Do not open inbound firewall ports unless you have a specific remote-management or monitoring requirement. GCE firewall rules still apply to VM traffic; configure only the access your administration method actually needs.

Configure the encoder and playlist
- Make the media readable. Put the authorized files on the VM or mount a storage location that remains available while the stream runs. Confirm the encoder’s account can read the files.
- Build the sequence in the encoder. Configure the desired order and repeat behavior using the encoder’s documented playlist or input mechanism. Confirm whether it supports your actual file formats and whether it can continue cleanly from the end of one item to the next.
- Set the YouTube destination. Enter the ingest URL and stream key using the encoder’s documented fields or secure configuration method. Do not substitute a YouTube watch-page or playlist URL for a media input unless the encoder explicitly documents that workflow.
- Set output and reconnection behavior. Choose a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval from YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Configure retries or process supervision according to the encoder’s own documentation.
- Test the whole sequence. Check transitions, audio continuity, and what happens at the playlist’s end. Verify that a reboot or encoder restart does not leave the stream permanently stopped.
No specific FFmpeg playlist command is included because the required input syntax and looping behavior have not been verified against current FFmpeg documentation. Do not copy a command from an unrelated setup without validating its inputs, loop semantics, audio mapping, and RTMPS output options for your files and software version.
Choose stream quality and test before going live
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Select a resolution and frame rate your VM can encode reliably, then use YouTube’s current codec and bitrate table for the exact combination. Avoid choosing a setting solely because the source file supports it: the VM must be able to encode it and the network must sustain the upload.
- Leave upload-bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends 20% above the total stream bitrate.
- Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast.
- Verify that both picture and sound are present and that the expected source is playing.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and test under network and workload conditions similar to the planned run.

During operation, check the items that can stop or degrade the broadcast:

- The encoder process is alive and its output is progressing.
- The VM can reach the network and the media path is still readable.
- The incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room show the expected picture and sound.
- Disk space and any mounted storage remain available for the duration of the run.
- After a VM reboot or process restart, the encoder returns to the intended playlist and YouTube receives a valid stream.
Design restart and alerting behavior for your particular encoder and VM. YouTube’s automatic archive behavior is not a substitute for a recovery plan, especially for a continuous broadcast that runs beyond 12 hours.

A continuous GCE stream consumes VM compute and outbound network capacity for as long as it runs. Google publishes separate Compute Engine VM and networking pricing; the actual cost depends on region, VM family and size, runtime, disk, IP choices, and outbound data. Use the current Google Cloud pricing material for your configuration rather than relying on a single generic monthly estimate.
Spot VMs can be discounted by up to 91% off the on-demand price of standard VMs, according to Google Cloud, but they can be reclaimed at any time and are recommended for fault-tolerant workloads. That interruption risk makes a Spot VM a poor default when viewers need an uninterrupted stream.
