To send animated video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, encode it as a supported live stream and deliver it to YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key. For a common SDR 1080p30 H.264 stream, a practical starting profile is libx264, 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP, 10 Mbps video, and—if the animation has audio—AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use RTMPS where available, test the feed in YouTube Live Control Room, and monitor stream health.

This is different from making an ordinary YouTube playlist of uploaded videos: an uploaded playlist does not use live ingest or require FFmpeg to send an RTMPS feed. The steps below concern a live encoder feed assembled from local video files.

Choose a profile that fits the animation and your connection

YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives recommended H.264 bitrates by output resolution and frame rate. These are ingest recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality. Pick an output your encoder can sustain and a bitrate your upload connection can carry reliably; intricate line work, movement, noise, and fades affect compression differently, so animation does not automatically require less bitrate.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate When it may fit
720p30 6 Mbps Useful when upload capacity is limited or the source is modest in detail.
1080p30 10 Mbps A balanced starting point for detailed animation when the connection is stable.
1080p60 14 Mbps For animation authored at 60 fps where smoother motion is important and the encoder and connection can sustain the higher rate.

These figures are YouTube’s current recommendations for incoming H.264 live streams, as listed on its live encoder settings page (accessed 2026-10-03). Use the recommendation for the chosen output rather than simply preserving a file’s original bitrate.

Codec and transport

YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS encoder ingest, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The example below uses H.264 via FFmpeg’s libx264 wrapper, a familiar option whose availability depends on how FFmpeg was built. Check the installed build and your account’s ingest options before relying on another codec; codecs are not interchangeable in compatibility or encoding load. FFmpeg documents libx264 and its options in the FFmpeg codecs documentation.

Keyframes and GOP length

YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds,” according to YouTube Help. At a fixed 30 fps, -g 60 sets a maximum GOP size of 60 frames, or about two seconds. At 60 fps, use -g 120 for the same interval. Recalculate if your output frame rate changes.

Picture and audio

YouTube’s advanced SDR recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 color, and 8-bit depth. Keep the source aspect ratio unless you intentionally crop or pad it. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. If the animation is silent, omit audio options rather than creating an unnecessary audio stream; if it has audio, map and encode the intended track.

Encode a single animated video with FFmpeg

This example loops one file and sends an H.264 live feed. It is a starting point, not a tested result; it assumes the input contains audio and that the installed FFmpeg build supports libx264. Replace the placeholders with the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30
  -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$RTMPS_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
  1. Confirm the input and output choices. Substitute the source filename and set the output frame rate, bitrate, and GOP for the selected profile. The example’s 30 fps, 10 Mbps, and 60-frame GOP correspond to the 1080p30 H.264 recommendation.
  2. Set up the ingest destination. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and copy its server URL and stream key. YouTube explains these settings in Manage live stream settings. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs.
  3. Start FFmpeg and check its progress. The -re option reads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible; -stream_loop -1 repeats this single input. Confirm FFmpeg reaches real time and does not fall behind.
  4. Verify the feed before relying on it. Check the preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room. Test representative motion and any audio before starting a long session.

Adjust rate control consistently

YouTube lists CBR as its recommended rate-control mode. In this example, -b:v sets the target video bitrate, while -maxrate and -bufsize constrain the rate behavior around it. The example uses a 10 Mbps target and maximum with a 20 Mbps buffer; validate the resulting feed in the encoder and Live Control Room rather than assuming a command line guarantees the intended ingest behavior.

Adapt the command for silent video or another frame rate

  • Silent source: remove -c:a, -b:a, and -ar if no audio stream is required. If the file has multiple tracks, make an intentional audio mapping choice rather than assuming the desired track is selected.
  • Different frame rate: change -r and set -g to approximately two seconds of frames—for example, 120 at 60 fps. Avoid forcing a frame rate that does not suit the source or intended playback.
  • Different resolution: add an explicit scale or crop/pad operation only when needed, preserve aspect ratio where possible, and select the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation. The example does not resize the input.
  • Different codec: use another YouTube-listed codec only if the FFmpeg build includes a suitable encoder and your ingest setup accepts it. Hardware capability and quality depend on the source, output, and machine; no universal CPU or GPU requirement follows from the profile alone.

Prepare a playlist of multiple files

A live playlist assembled from separate local files is not the same thing as an uploaded YouTube playlist. The command above repeats one input; it does not define file ordering, transitions, gapless handoffs, or a multi-file playlist. Those behaviors depend on the local playlist construction, the media properties, and the FFmpeg build. Do not assume that simply adding several inputs will produce seamless playback.

Before scheduling continuous playback, choose and validate a playlist method that handles your actual file formats, audio tracks, transitions, and end-of-file behavior. Test the handoff between representative files in a private or otherwise appropriate test stream. A continuous feed also needs process supervision and a recovery plan if the encoder process or network connection stops; these are operational choices separate from encoding settings.

Run a preflight and troubleshoot the feed

Preflight checklist

  • Confirm that the selected codec and RTMP/RTMPS destination are supported by the installed FFmpeg build and YouTube stream configuration.
  • Check output resolution, frame rate, pixel format, bitrate, and GOP interval against the intended profile.
  • Play a representative segment containing the most detailed movement, fades, and audio you expect to stream.
  • Verify that the encoder keeps up in real time and that upload capacity remains stable at the chosen rate.
  • Confirm the Live Control Room receives the feed and reports healthy stream status before depending on it.
  • Keep the stream key private and rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed.

Common symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely checks and corrective action
YouTube does not receive a feed Check the RTMPS server URL, stream key, and ingest configuration in Live Control Room. Verify that the key has not been mistyped or exposed and that the FFmpeg build supports the selected output protocol.
Live Control Room reports an unhealthy or unstable stream Compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the output, then check whether upload bandwidth is stable. Lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate together as appropriate rather than keeping an unsustainable target.
FFmpeg falls behind real time Check the encoder workload and preset, input complexity, output resolution, and competing machine load. A slower x264 preset can improve compression efficiency but requires more processing time; use a faster preset or lower output demands if the machine cannot sustain real time.
Keyframes appear too far apart Recalculate GOP size from output frame rate and the two-second target: at 30 fps use 60 frames, at 60 fps use 120. YouTube says not to exceed a four-second keyframe interval.
Audio is missing or unintended Check whether the source actually has audio and whether the intended track is selected. Remove audio encoding options for genuinely silent content, or map and encode the desired track when audio is required.
Playback pauses or jumps between playlist items Inspect the playlist assembly and file compatibility. The single-file loop command does not configure multi-file ordering or gapless transitions; validate the specific playlist method and handoffs separately.

Choose local encoding or a cloud service for continuous operation

A local FFmpeg process gives you control over the encoding and file workflow, but the computer, FFmpeg process, and sufficiently stable upload connection must remain available while the live feed runs. A remote server can keep that work away from a home computer, but you must check that its encoding capacity, bandwidth, storage, and process recovery suit your stream. The necessary resources depend on the animation and chosen output; there is no single hardware specification that fits every workload.
