Whose perspective does Val present?
Val is a portrait shaped around Kilmer’s life and archive, not an exhaustive or neutral account of every family member’s experience. Mercedes told the Los Angeles Times that the film presented events faithfully from her father’s perspective and lovingly. Her description is her assessment of the film’s point of view.
In the same 2021 interview, Mercedes said of her father, “He’s very private.” Kilmer, in an email quoted by the Times about revisiting his life for the documentary, wrote: “It has been a joyous experience. It makes me happy to see the richness of the life I’ve had.”

What happened to Val Kilmer?
The Associated Press reported that Kilmer died on April 1, 2025, at age 65; his daughter Mercedes identified pneumonia as the cause. The AP also reported that he had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and underwent treatment. That later-life context informs the documentary’s account of his final years, but the family and archival material in Val spans much more than his illness.
For Kilmer’s own written perspective, the AP identifies his 2020 memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry. It is a memoir rather than a book specifically about Mercedes and Jack.
