You can send a video file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by copying the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, then publishing to that destination over RTMPS. The basic command below sends one file in real time; making it loop, recovering from failures, and keeping a YouTube event live are separate concerns that require testing and monitoring.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel prepared for live streaming, with a stream selected or created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- An FFmpeg build that includes the input demuxer, selected video and audio encoders, FLV muxer, and RTMPS support needed by your command. Builds differ; check yours with
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -encoders. - A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the bitrate you choose, plus a short test file representative of the material you plan to stream.
- A prerecorded input file or another FFmpeg-readable source. This workflow sends an FFmpeg input; it does not broadcast live camera video by itself.
YouTube says a stream key is like the stream’s password and address: it tells an encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat the key as a credential. Do not put it in a public post, repository, screenshot, or shared script. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Find the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. A custom stream key can be reused. Use the destination exactly as YouTube supplies it; do not guess the host, application path, or key arrangement.
- Where available, copy the RTMPS URL rather than relying on a default RTMP URL. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingest. RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection; if you see a TLS error, first check that the destination really is the RTMPS URL shown by YouTube, then follow YouTube’s current port guidance.
- Store the key in a protected local configuration or environment setting. Avoid typing a real key into examples that may be shared or retained in shell history.
FFmpeg’s RTMP output URL commonly places the server path and key together, but the exact destination format can vary. Use the full URL arrangement provided for your stream and substitute it for the placeholder below.

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmps://HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'
-rereads a file at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as possible.-i input.mp4names the input file. Replace it with your file path or another supported FFmpeg input.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacselect common video and audio encoders. They are examples, not a promise that your FFmpeg build includes them or that they suit every source.-f flvselects the FLV output format used for this RTMP-style publishing workflow.- The quoted final URL is a placeholder. Replace it with the actual RTMPS destination and key information from Live Control Room. Never publish a command containing your real key.
FFmpeg options apply in command order to the relevant following input or output. Keep input options before the input they affect and output options before the output they affect. If FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or protocol, check the local build rather than assuming another build has the same features.
Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in October 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and keyframes every two seconds, with four seconds as the maximum. Encoder compatibility depends on the selected format and your FFmpeg build, so check YouTube’s current encoder requirements before relying on a configuration.

There is no single bitrate that fits every resolution, frame rate, and codec. For example, YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists a minimum of 5 Mbps and a recommended 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps; at 1080p and 60 fps it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended; at 720p and 30 fps it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or source will work. Use the current table at YouTube’s live encoder settings for the combination you plan to send.
Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain continuously, not merely in a brief speed test. Test representative motion and audio, then review stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; for prerecorded ambience or a radio-style program with little audience interaction, favoring stability over minimum delay is a practical trade-off, not a platform guarantee.

Looping a file is not the same as guaranteeing a continuous stream
The basic command sends one input in real time; it does not make that input repeat forever. FFmpeg has options such as -stream_loop -1 for repeating an input, but whether a particular file loops cleanly depends on the FFmpeg version, media, timestamps, encoder behavior, and audio/video synchronization. Test the exact file and build before using it for an unattended stream. Do not assume a playlist or transitions between different files will be seamless.
“Continuous” can mean several different things, and one does not prove the next:

- The FFmpeg process is still running.
- The source is still producing valid packets.
- The network connection is successfully publishing those packets.
- YouTube is still receiving a valid stream and the event remains live and playable to viewers.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP recovery example that can retry after temporary network failures. Recovery can help, but it does not guarantee that viewers will see no interruption or that YouTube will keep an event valid indefinitely. A local process supervisor and monitoring can improve operations, but the right setup depends on your operating system and deployment.
Test and monitor before relying on the stream
- Start with a short, preferably unlisted test using the same source type, encoding settings, and network you intend to use.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview for incoming video and audio. Review stream health and resolve any reported errors before making the event public or depending on it.
- Check a viewer endpoint as well as the FFmpeg process. A process that has not exited does not prove YouTube is receiving playable audio and video.
- During operation, monitor both publishing and playback. If the stream is important, decide in advance who will notice a failure and how the source will be restarted or corrected.
- End the stream deliberately when finished. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer sessions.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Confirm the selected Live Control Room event, exact stream URL, and key. Check that the key has not been reset and that the command uses the current value. Keep the key private. |
| TLS or connection error | Verify that you copied the RTMPS URL, not an RTMP URL, and confirm your FFmpeg build supports the required protocol. Follow YouTube’s current port guidance. |
| “Unknown encoder” or unsupported format | Run ffmpeg -version and inspect ffmpeg -encoders. Use encoders and formats present in that build, and make sure the selected codec is supported by the ingest settings you intend to use. |
| Video or audio is missing or invalid | Check the input streams and chosen codecs, then review Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. Test a short representative file before a longer session. |
| Playback buffers or stream health degrades | Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate and whether settings match the current YouTube guidance for codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consider whether a less aggressive latency setting better suits a prerecorded stream. |
| The file ends and the stream stops | The basic command sends one input only. Configure and test looping for the specific file and FFmpeg build; a single-file loop is not proof of a seamless, indefinitely valid YouTube event. |
| FFmpeg keeps running but viewers see a break | Check the source output, network publishing, and YouTube playback separately. Process survival alone cannot confirm a valid live feed or an uninterrupted event. |
