Use OBS Studio to play a local video or playlist and send it to YouTube Live at 1280×720. For H.264 live ingest, YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as recommended for both 720p30 and 720p60, with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Start with 30 fps if your PC or connection is constrained, then test the exact files, audio and settings you plan to use. Those figures are YouTube’s global recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular budget PC or Indian internet connection can sustain the stream.
What you need before setting up
- A PC that can run OBS Studio, your video files stored locally, and a stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to its stream key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- For a multi-file playlist in OBS, VLC media player installed. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for its VLC Video source.
OBS’s baseline system requirements describe compatibility, not a promise that a given computer can encode and stream your specific workload. Its demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. See OBS system requirements.
Prepare the 720p video files
Use a consistent frame size and frame rate
For standard-definition (SDR) 720p, prepare files at 1280×720 with progressive scan. If practical, keep the frame rate consistent with the original recording and across playlist items. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4 with H.264 video and matching the recorded frame rate. It recommends 5 Mbps for 720p SDR uploads at 24, 25 or 30 fps, and 7.5 Mbps at 48, 50 or 60 fps. These are file-upload recommendations, not live-stream bitrate settings. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Check the audio and file transitions
Play each file locally before adding it to OBS. Confirm that the picture displays correctly, the audio is present at a usable level, and clips start and end where expected. If the files have different frame rates, resolutions or audio levels, test their transitions in OBS rather than assuming they will look and sound identical in a continuous broadcast.

Build a playlist in OBS
For a single video
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene you will use for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source, browse to the video file, and confirm the source settings.
- Use the source’s loop option if you want that file to restart automatically when it ends. Check the preview and audio meters.
OBS Media Source supports common local video formats. Its settings and supported formats are documented in the OBS Media Sources guide.
For several videos in sequence
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In the OBS Sources panel, select +, then VLC Video. If the source is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Create or select the source, then add the local files in the order you want them to play.
- Choose whether the playlist should retain that order or shuffle, and whether it should stop at the end or loop. Confirm the chosen behavior in the OBS preview.
Use Media Source for one file and VLC Video for a multi-file playlist. VLC Video provides playlist order, shuffle and loop controls; details are in the OBS guide.
Set OBS output for a 720p YouTube Live stream
Choose resolution and frame rate
Set the stream output to 1280×720. Choose 30 fps or 60 fps according to the source material and what your PC can sustain. For a constrained machine, 30 fps is a sensible first test; 60 fps may suit smoother-motion footage, but it increases the work the system must handle. OBS’s system guidance does not establish a universal budget-PC specification that guarantees either setting.
Set live encoder options
YouTube’s current H.264 live guidance lists the following 720p ingest settings at both 30 and 60 fps:
| Setting | YouTube guidance for 720p30 | YouTube guidance for 720p60 |
|---|---|---|
| Live ingest bitrate | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| Rate control | CBR | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
These figures describe YouTube live ingest, not the bitrate to use when exporting or uploading a video file. YouTube lists them in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

In OBS, configure the output encoder for H.264, rate control for CBR, the selected bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Select YouTube RTMPS as the streaming service when configuring the broadcast. Labels and available encoder choices may differ by OBS version and hardware.
Choose software or hardware encoding
If OBS offers a compatible hardware encoder, it can offload encoding work from the CPU. Availability depends on the PC and its graphics hardware; hardware encoding is not automatically faster or better for every configuration. OBS notes that performance and quality vary. See OBS hardware encoding.
Connect OBS to YouTube and start the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or select the live stream, and copy its stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and paste the stream key. Do not share or publish the key.
- In OBS, confirm your scene, playlist source, 1280×720 output, frame rate, encoder, bitrate, CBR and keyframe interval.
- Select Start Streaming in OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
- When finishing, stop the stream in OBS and confirm the broadcast has ended in YouTube Studio.
Exact YouTube Studio labels can vary as its interface changes. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the required ingest settings and recommends testing and monitoring stream health.

YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast and monitoring stream health. A static opening frame or brief test with no sound may not expose problems that occur during normal playback.
- Let the playlist play through representative sections, including transitions between files.
- Watch the OBS preview and audio meters; listen for missing, distorted or unexpectedly quiet audio.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators while the test runs.
- Look for dropped frames or interruptions, and reduce the frame rate or bitrate if the PC or connection cannot sustain the selected settings. Retest after changes.
The bitrate recommendation is not a measurement of your internet service. Judge reliability by a sustained real-world test and YouTube’s stream-health feedback, not by the PC’s price or its location in India.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only include videos and audio you have the rights or permission to stream. A playlist that runs continuously does not change copyright obligations. Review YouTube’s notices in Studio and address any claims or restrictions that appear before relying on a broadcast. Copyright permission and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate questions; permission to use material does not by itself guarantee monetization, and repeated or reused material may be assessed under YouTube’s channel policies. Check the current requirements that apply to your channel and content in YouTube Studio.

The VLC Video source is missing
Install VLC and restart OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, make sure VLC is also 64-bit. If you only need one file, use Media Source instead.
The stream stutters or OBS reports dropped frames
First determine whether the issue is encoding performance or network delivery: check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health during a representative test. If encoding is struggling, try 30 fps, simplify the scene, or use an available compatible hardware encoder. If the connection cannot sustain the bitrate, lower it and test again; YouTube’s 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended values are guidance, not a guarantee that your connection can deliver them steadily.
The preview is blank or a playlist item does not play
Confirm the file plays locally, that the correct files are selected in VLC Video, and that the source is visible in the current OBS scene. Remove and re-add a problematic item if necessary, then test playback in the preview before going live.
The video plays but there is no sound
Check that the file itself has an audio track, that OBS’s audio meters move during playback, and that the correct audio device and track settings are selected. Listen to the YouTube preview during a test; local playback alone does not verify that audio reaches the stream.

YouTube does not receive the OBS stream
Check that the stream key was copied from the intended YouTube broadcast and pasted correctly in OBS, and that the stream has been started in OBS. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key.
DIY costs and an always-on alternative
OBS’s local-file workflow does not require a dedicated streaming appliance. It does require your PC and internet connection to remain available while the broadcast runs. An external drive may provide more room for a video library, but it does not improve encoding or stream stability.
Or let it run in the cloud
