To rotate prerecorded videos without ending a YouTube Live broadcast, keep one encoder or hosted playout service sending a continuous feed to the same live stream while its playlist advances from one video to the next. Configure rotation in the encoder or playout service—not in a YouTube watch-page playlist—and do not stop the encoder or select End stream between videos.
What stays live when the video changes?
YouTube Live receives an encoded feed from an encoder. The encoder or hosted playout service controls which media appears in that feed. For an uninterrupted broadcast, the outgoing feed must remain active while the playout source changes. YouTube’s encoder setup explains how to connect and start a feed, but does not provide one universal playlist-rotation control; the exact queue or playlist steps depend on your chosen software or service (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
A YouTube watch-page playlist is not, by itself, a live playout queue. Put the videos in the encoder’s media playlist or in a hosted service that explicitly supports continuous playlist playback. The YouTube Live Streaming API describes a 24/7 broadcast that can remain live while separate broadcast resources are started and completed, but that API example is not a playlist setup walkthrough (Google for Developers: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams).
Set up rotation without interrupting the broadcast
- Choose where playout runs. Use a local encoder that can advance through media files, or a hosted playout service whose current capabilities explicitly include continuous playlist playback. A local setup gives you direct control, but the computer, encoder, and network must remain available. A hosted setup can run remotely; check the provider’s current playlist controls, recovery behavior, archive management, data handling, and cost rather than assuming those are included.
- Prepare your videos and playlist. Arrange the files in the desired order and configure the playlist or rotation in the encoder or playout service. Confirm that you have the rights to stream every video. Do not assume that putting videos in a YouTube playlist makes them rotate in the live feed.
- Connect the encoder in YouTube Studio. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send content to your stream. YouTube’s setup guide documents the encoder connection and start process (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- Start the encoder and check the feed. Confirm that the preview shows the intended video and that the stream status indicates a healthy connection before relying on rotation. Keep the encoder sending content as the playlist advances.
- Let the media change, not the broadcast. Avoid stopping the encoder, stopping its content output, or selecting End stream when you only want the next video to begin. YouTube says that stopping content from the encoder ends the stream. If you use a scheduled broadcast, review its automatic start and stop behavior before going live; broadcast settings can affect its lifecycle (Google for Developers: Life of a Broadcast).
- Plan the archive separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be saved as one complete archive; plan recording or archiving separately if you need a full copy (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
Choose local or hosted playout
| Approach | What it means | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | Your computer runs the encoder and advances through the media files. YouTube documents the connection process. | Playlist controls in your encoder, and whether the computer, encoder, and network can remain available for the whole broadcast. |
| Hosted playout | A service runs the playout remotely. A vendor describes continuous playlist looping and rotation of completed broadcasts, but that is a vendor claim, not independent validation (LiveGoLive: 24/7 YouTube Streaming Without OBS). | Current playlist and recovery features, operating limits, archive management, data handling, and total cost. The cited sources do not establish an independent feature or reliability comparison. |
For either approach, the key operational question is whether the encoder keeps sending the feed while the source changes. Compare playlist-order control, what happens after a disconnect, dependence on local equipment, archive handling, and ongoing cost before choosing.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Common interruptions and how to avoid them
- The live broadcast ends when one video finishes: The encoder may be stopping its output instead of advancing to the next playlist item. Configure the media source or queue to continue playback and test the transition while monitoring the live preview.
- The encoder reconnects but the scheduled broadcast cannot continue: Check the scheduled stream’s Auto-stop setting and current interface labels. An OBS Project community guide warns that scheduled-stream Auto-stop can prevent reconnecting later to continue the same broadcast; treat that guidance as community documentation and check the current OBS and YouTube settings (OBS Project Forums: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio).
- The video does not rotate: Verify that the playlist is configured in the encoder or hosted playout service and that its playback mode advances as intended. YouTube does not supply a universal playlist scheduler for this workflow.
- The stream appears offline: Check that the encoder is still sending content and that it is using the server URL and stream key for the intended live stream. Recheck preview and status in the Live Control Room before changing broadcast settings.
- A long broadcast is missing from the archive: A stream longer than 12 hours is not covered by YouTube’s stated automatic-archive assurance for streams under 12 hours. Use a separate recording or archiving plan if you need the complete long-form program.
Copyright and live-stream eligibility
Rotation does not change the rules for the content being broadcast. Use videos you have the rights to stream, and make sure the channel and stream comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube says it may restrict access to live streaming (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming). A continuous feed is a technical setup, not an exemption from content policies.
