Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYes—you can put videos with different audio codecs in one ordinary playlist. The playlist does not convert or normalize them, though: each file must still be supported by the player and device that will play it. Test the files on the actual destination, then convert only the audio streams that fail if the video and container are already compatible.
What a mixed-codec playlist does—and does not do
A playlist is an ordering mechanism: it points to media files and arranges when they play. It does not make an unsupported audio codec decodable, nor does it convert one file to match another. A playlist may therefore play some videos successfully and fail, play silently, or behave differently on others.
Compatibility depends on more than the audio codec name. The target player, its operating system or build, the device, the file container, and stream properties can all matter. There is no single output audio format that can be promised to work on every unspecified television, phone, app, or computer.
Identify the playback target before changing files
Write down where the playlist will be used: the specific player or app, operating system or device model, intended container, and whether playback is local, on a TV, or streamed. Check that destination’s current supported-format documentation. A file that plays on the computer used to prepare it is not proof that it will play on the intended TV or receiving device.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Also note whether you need subtitles, multiple audio languages, or particular channel layouts. These streams may need to be retained when you make a compatible copy.

Check the streams
In VLC, open a file and use Tools → Codec Information to see which codecs it uses. Menu labels can vary by installed release; the cited instructions are for VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0. You can also use FFmpeg stream probing. Record the filename, container, video codec, audio codec, channel layout, and subtitles or alternate audio streams where relevant.

A codec label alone may not reveal every compatibility constraint, so use the inventory to guide testing rather than treating it as a guarantee.
Try representative files on the real destination
- Group the files by audio codec and any other meaningful differences, such as container or channel layout.
- Add representative files from each group to the intended playlist without converting them.
- Play through the files on the actual destination. Check for sound, synchronization, channel handling, subtitles, seeking, and transitions between playlist items.
- Note exactly which files or streams fail. Do not convert files that already work unless there is a separate reason to do so.
Choose the smallest conversion that fixes the problem
| Method | What changes | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stream copy | Copies selected streams without re-encoding them. | The streams already use codecs and properties accepted by the destination, and you only need to remux or select streams. | Fast and avoids re-encoding quality changes, but cannot make an unsupported codec compatible. |
| Convert audio only | Decodes and re-encodes the audio while copying compatible video. | Audio is the incompatibility and the chosen output container and audio format are supported by the destination. | Changes audio and takes processing time; the video can remain untouched when stream copy is supported. |
| Transcode additional streams | Re-encodes video, audio, or other streams that the target cannot handle. | The video codec, container-related characteristics, or other stream properties also fail on the target. | Provides more control over compatibility, but takes encoding time and can change quality. |
FFmpeg defines transcoding as decoding a stream and encoding it again. Its documentation notes that FFmpeg transcodes all audio, video, and subtitle streams unless you specify -c copy for them. Make stream-copy choices explicit so you do not unintentionally re-encode streams that already work. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Before converting, confirm that the destination accepts the chosen audio format and that the output container can hold it. If only audio is incompatible, convert that stream and copy compatible video where possible. Keep the original files so you can retry with different settings without losing the source.
Validate one converted file before batch work
- Choose a representative file from a group that failed.
- Make a test output using the smallest change that addresses the failure: audio conversion if only audio is unsupported, or additional stream conversion only where needed.
- Play the test output on the target. Check that audio is present and synchronized, channel handling is correct, subtitles and alternate audio remain available if required, and seeking works.
- Test the file in its playlist position, including the transition from the previous item to the next.
- Only after those checks pass, apply the confirmed settings to the remaining files in that group.
Conversion results and trade-offs depend on the source streams, output settings, container, and destination. The official documentation does not establish one universal best codec or a guaranteed setting for an unspecified device.

Local playlists and HLS playlists are different
A local playlist file and an HLS multivariant playlist are not interchangeable just because both organize media. HLS clients use the manifest to identify stream variants and their codec requirements. Apple’s guidance describes the CODECS attribute as a comma-separated list of formats present in media segments and says it provides a complete list of codecs necessary to decode a particular stream. In an HLS workflow, make each declaration match the actual segments and variants; do not assume a local M3U-style playlist is valid HLS. See Apple’s Creating a Multivariant Playlist guidance and FFmpeg’s formats documentation.
Troubleshoot common failures
- A file appears in the playlist but has no sound: check whether the target supports that file’s audio codec and stream properties. Test a copy with only the audio converted, keeping compatible video copied.
- It plays on a computer but not on the TV or receiving device: test on the actual destination and consult its supported-format information; playback on another system does not establish compatibility.
- Audio works but the video does not: inspect the video codec and container as well. Audio-only conversion will not fix an unsupported video stream or container characteristic.
- Subtitles or another language track disappear: inspect which streams were included in the output and preserve the required streams. Do not assume a conversion retained every track.
- The converted file still fails or behaves differently in a playlist: verify the output container and all relevant streams, then test seeking and transitions on the target. Change one cause at a time and retain the original.
- An HLS client rejects or cannot decode a variant: check that the manifest’s
CODECSdeclaration accurately describes the media segments and variant.
