For a custom website, put a muted, looping <video> inside the homepage hero and position it behind the headline with CSS. In WordPress, start with the Video block and configure its playback settings, then use your theme or CSS for the background layout. In either case, keep the headline and call to action as regular page text, and provide a poster image so the hero still works when video does not play.
Choose the implementation that fits your site

For either route, use a short, compressed clip and a static image fallback. If your site serves larger files or has higher traffic, you may need to consider video delivery separately; a basic implementation can use the site’s media library or an existing media URL.
Add a video background with HTML and CSS
1. Put the video and hero content in the same container
Use a <video> element inside the hero, with the page’s meaningful content in a separate element. The example supplies WebM and MP4 sources, a poster image, and attributes commonly used for a decorative background:

</section>Replace the sample paths with files available to your site. Supplying more than one <source> lets the browser select a supported format. The headline and action remain actual HTML rather than text embedded in the clip.

2. Position and crop the video

}The hero creates the positioning context and clips overflow; the video fills it and object-fit: cover crops the edges as needed. The sample’s 60vh is a starting point, not a required height. Adjust the hero size and crop for your design, and check that text remains readable over every part of the moving image. The isolation setting creates a local stacking context so the negative video layer stays behind the hero content.
3. Test autoplay and the poster fallback
muted playback is more likely to qualify for autoplay than playback with sound, and playsinline requests playback within the element’s area rather than a separate full-screen presentation. Neither guarantees autoplay: browser policies and user settings can prevent playback. Keep the poster image meaningful, and verify the page in the browsers and devices your audience uses. Set up the background in WordPress
- In the block editor, open the homepage and insert a Video block where the hero media belongs.
- Choose Upload, Media Library, or Insert from URL, then select the clip.
- In the block settings, configure autoplay, loop, muted, inline playback, controls, preload, and a poster image as needed. For a typical decorative background, muted, looping playback is the usual starting point.
- Check your theme and page builder for a video-background control. If they do not provide the needed treatment, add an additional CSS class to the block and style the containing hero and its content.
- Preview the published page on desktop and mobile, including with video unavailable, and confirm the poster and text layout remain usable.
WordPress documents the Video block and its settings here: WordPress Video block. A low preload setting is not a guarantee that no file will download early: when autoplay is used, it takes precedence over preload hints.
Keep the homepage fast
Autoplaying media may begin downloading early, including when a video is outside the initial viewport. For a hero visible at page load, balance immediate playback against page loading and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), which measures when the largest content element becomes visible.

- Use a short, compressed clip rather than a long source video.
- Remove an audio track that the page will always mute; unused audio still adds to the file.
- Use a poster image so users see a designed fallback before video data is ready or if playback does not begin.
- Avoid loading several large background videos on the same page.
- If the video is lower on the page, consider deferring its download until it approaches the viewport. web.dev describes using a poster and Intersection Observer for this purpose.

Make the hero accessible and useful without video
A decorative background should not carry information that visitors need. Keep the page title, offer, and essential instructions in HTML text, not only inside the video. If the clip communicates information, provide that information in accessible text and make playback controllable; a continuously looping clip without controls can create an accessibility problem. Meaningful video may also need captions. See web.dev: Video accessibility.

Use aria-hidden="true" only when the video is genuinely decorative and adds no content that needs to be conveyed to assistive technology. A poster and text content should leave the homepage understandable when autoplay is blocked, video is disabled, or the connection is slow.
Troubleshoot common problems
