To add a changing label—such as a latest-follower or latest-subscriber label—to a YouTube live stream, set it up with an overlay provider and display it in your streaming software. In OBS Studio, the standard route is to add the provider’s overlay URL as a Browser source in the scene. YouTube Studio manages the broadcast and live chat; it is not where you compose scene labels.
Choose the right kind of label
Static text
If the words never change—for example, a documentary title or a “Subscribe” message—add a text source in your streaming software and position it in the scene. You do not need an event integration for static text.
Dynamic labels
A dynamic label changes in response to an event or account data, such as the latest follower or subscriber. It generally comes from a provider that supports your YouTube account and the specific event you want to display. Check that support before configuring it: a label option intended for another platform may not work for YouTube.
Labels, alerts, and chat are different
A label displays information; an alert announces an event, often with animation or sound. Chat is the audience conversation. YouTube’s live chat controls do not create event labels, and an overlay that displays chat is a separate scene element. YouTube documents live chat separately from broadcast setup: YouTube’s live chat help.

Add a provider overlay to an OBS scene
This is the usual method for provider-hosted labels. OBS’s tutorial explains that a provider configures the overlay and OBS displays it using a Browser source; an OBS plugin is not required for this general route. Providers may call the link an Overlay URL, Widget URL, or Alert URL. See the OBS alerts and chat tutorial.
- Configure the label with its provider. Choose the information to show and set its appearance there. Confirm the provider supports your YouTube account and the desired event.
- Copy the provider’s overlay URL. Keep it private if the provider treats it as an access link; anyone who obtains it may be able to view or use the overlay.
- Select the scene in OBS. In the Scenes list, choose the scene in which viewers should see the label.
- Add a Browser source. In Sources, select the add button, choose Browser, and create the source.
- Enter the URL and dimensions. Paste the overlay link into the Browser source’s URL field. Set its width and height to fit the overlay and the scene, then save.
- Check placement before going live. Inspect the scene preview and confirm the label is legible and not covered by another source. If possible, verify the result in a test or private broadcast before relying on it in a public stream.
The exact provider settings and available label types vary, so use its current instructions for account connection and overlay configuration.

Use Streamlabs Stream Labels inside OBS
Streamlabs documents a plugin route that adds labels through its OBS integration. Its quick-start guide lists Windows and OBS Studio 28.0.0 or later as requirements; check the guide for current compatibility before installing: Streamlabs’ OBS plugin quick-start guide.
- Install the Streamlabs plugin and open Streamlabs from OBS’s top menu.
- Choose Stream Labels, then select Add a Stream Label.
- Pick the label you want. If the workflow offers a scene choice, select the scene where it should appear.
- To change its wording or variables, open the label menu, choose Edit, make the changes, and save.
- Check the scene preview. If another source covers the label, move the label higher in the Sources list so it renders above that source.
The plugin guide notes that some changes, such as adding an overlay, may require restarting OBS. Treat that as specific to this plugin workflow, not a general requirement for Browser sources.

Older StreamLabels text-file workflow
A Streamlabs support article published on December 9, 2021 describes a separate method: the StreamLabels app writes changing values to text files, and a text source in streaming software reads the chosen file. Its example is most_recent_follower.txt. In that documented approach, the app must stay open for real-time file updates. The article also flags its embedded video as outdated, so confirm that the app and operating-system support remain available before following its steps: Streamlabs’ Stream Labels instructions.
This file-based route differs from a provider Browser overlay and from the OBS plugin: it relies on an external app writing a file and a text source reading it.

Troubleshoot a label that is missing or stale
- No label appears: Confirm the Browser or text source is in the scene currently being broadcast. Recheck the URL or file path and make sure the source has usable width and height.
- The label is hidden: Check whether another scene source covers it. In OBS, raise the label in the Sources list when it should sit above gameplay or other visuals.
- The value does not update: Check the provider’s label configuration and its connection to the correct account and platform. For the older StreamLabels file method, confirm the app is running and the text source points to the intended output file.
- The label works for another platform but not YouTube: Verify that the provider supports the specific YouTube account and event type. Do not assume platform-specific labels are interchangeable.
- Plugin options are unavailable: Confirm that your system and OBS version meet the plugin guide’s listed requirements, and consult the guide for current installation or restart guidance.
Keep the broadcast itself separate from the label setup
Labels are part of the scene composed in OBS or other streaming software. YouTube Live Control Room is for broadcast controls and related live features, not for editing the visual label in that scene. YouTube’s live streaming setup help covers starting a broadcast. For chat display in OBS, see the OBS chat FAQ.
Or let it run in the cloud
Stream labels are scene overlays; StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping uploaded video live on YouTube around the clock. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video on YouTube, not camera-based live capture. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
