A live stream follows a simple path: capture and compose the picture and sound, encode them to settings the destination accepts, send the stream to its ingest system, then let the platform prepare playback for viewers. The right workflow depends on your sources, available encoding capacity, connection stability, and destination requirements.
How a live stream gets from source to viewer
- Capture and compose: Bring in the video and audio sources—such as a camera, game, or screen—and arrange them in a broadcast tool. That tool may be software, a console, or dedicated hardware; Twitch documents all three as broadcaster options. Twitch Developers
- Encode: Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe cadence that the destination supports. These settings work together: a higher resolution or frame rate generally calls for more bitrate, and platform recommendations are not interchangeable.
- Connect and send: Configure the destination’s ingest address and authorization details, usually including a stream key. The protocol must match what the destination accepts.
- Platform processing: The service receives the incoming stream and may create alternate versions for viewers with different playback conditions. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams; access to transcoding on other platforms can vary. YouTube Help OBS Project
- Test and monitor: Check stream health while live. Test the actual upload connection with representative motion and sound; a recommended bitrate is not a promise that your connection can sustain it.
Choose an encoding path
Software encoder
A software encoder runs on a computer and gives you a place to combine sources and configure output. Its suitability depends on whether the computer can handle the source and encoding workload while maintaining the chosen settings.
Console or dedicated hardware encoder
A console or dedicated encoder can provide the encoding path without relying on a general-purpose software setup. Dedicated hardware is optional, not a universal requirement: Twitch lists it alongside software encoders and consoles. Select it when it fits your sources and operating needs, not because one particular device is required. Twitch Developers
Match settings to the destination
Start with the destination’s current encoder guidance rather than copying settings from another platform. YouTube Help’s page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP and RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These are YouTube-specific instructions, not universal settings.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube bitrate examples
| Output | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help, accessed 2026 | 17 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help, accessed 2026 |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help, accessed 2026 | 8 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help, accessed 2026 |
For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); its guidance says HLS may be considered when the encoder lacks the needed RTMP capability. Check the current YouTube instructions and your encoder’s supported combinations before configuring an HDR workflow. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Do not transfer bitrate figures across services
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API publishes its own input recommendations and output rendition ladder. For example, its ladder lists H.264 at 1920×1080 and 50/60 fps at 9,000 Kbps. That is a Google Cloud API figure, not a replacement for YouTube’s recommendations. Google Cloud says SRT is preferred over RTMP for its API because it offers additional features, including packet-drop recovery and forward error correction; using it requires a compatible endpoint and encoder. Connect the encoder to the ingest endpoint
Ingest is the platform-side entry point for your outgoing stream. Use the protocol and endpoint details supplied for the specific destination, and keep the stream key private: it authorizes publishing to your channel or event.
- Twitch: Twitch documents RTMP ingest URLs and stream keys. Twitch Developers: Video Broadcast
- YouTube Live: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Follow YouTube’s current setup flow for the stream URL and key. YouTube Help
- Google Cloud Live Stream API: Its documented input protocols include RTMP_PUSH and SRT_PUSH. SRT is not a drop-in choice unless both the encoder and endpoint support it. Google Cloud Documentation
Test the connection and protect stream health
- Run an upload speed test from the connection you will use for the event.
- Choose an output bitrate based on the destination’s guidance and leave enough connection capacity for stable delivery; do not treat the listed recommendation as a guaranteed sustainable rate.
- Send a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using representative content. Include the motion and sound levels expected in the real program.
- Watch the platform’s stream-health indicators and correct problems before the event if possible.
- During the live event, continue monitoring health. If the connection cannot sustain the output, reduce the demands on it—such as resolution, frame rate, or bitrate—using a combination supported by the destination.
YouTube specifically recommends speed testing, testing with representative sound and motion, and monitoring stream health. YouTube Help

Common workflow decisions
- Destination compatibility: Confirm protocol, codecs, bitrate guidance, and keyframe requirements for the service receiving the stream.
- Connection reliability: Select resolution and frame rate with the available upload capacity in mind, then test the real connection.
- Encoding resources: Choose software, console, or dedicated hardware according to your sources and processing capacity; no one path suits every production.
- Transport resilience: RTMP/RTMPS appears in the documented Twitch and YouTube workflows. SRT’s recovery features are relevant to compatible endpoints such as the Google Cloud Live Stream API, not a universal substitute.
- Viewer renditions: YouTube says it transcodes live streams. Do not assume another service offers the same renditions or access conditions.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should keep prerecorded video live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different workflow from a camera-based broadcast: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free day.
