What Is Real-Time Communication in Video Streaming?

Real-time video is defined by whether end-to-end delay suits the task. Learn how WebRTC compares with low-latency HLS and DASH.

Real-time communication in video streaming means delivering audio and video with little enough end-to-end delay to support the viewer’s task. For a conversation, that means a quick enough response to talk naturally; for a documentary broadcast, a delay of several seconds may be acceptable if it enables reliable delivery to a large audience. There is no single delay that makes every stream “real-time.”

What does real-time mean in a video stream?

“Real-time” is a practical description, not a universal latency threshold. The relevant measure is usually glass-to-glass latency: the time from an event happening in the real world to the corresponding image and sound appearing on a viewer’s device. It includes the path through capture, encoding, delivery, buffering and playback, rather than just one part of the system.

A delay that is fine for watching a documentary may be frustrating in a live interview where the host expects audience replies, or in a remote lesson where participants need to take turns speaking. Choose a target based on how quickly people must respond to one another, then account for the scale and reliability the broadcast needs.

How do WebRTC and low-latency HLS or DASH differ?

WebRTC is a standards-based family for interactive multimedia exchange. The IETF describes it as “a protocol suite aimed at real-time multimedia exchange between browsers, and between browsers and other entities” in RFC 8835. It is a natural fit when participants need conversational feedback. That does not mean every WebRTC session is a direct peer-to-peer connection: the standards address communication across network intermediaries, including firewalls, relays and NAT devices.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

HLS and DASH are HTTP-based approaches for delivering live video, including to large audiences. Apple describes HLS as using ordinary web servers and CDNs and adapting playback to network conditions. Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) adds mechanisms such as partial media segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads and preload hints to reduce delay while retaining the HLS delivery model. Low-Latency DASH (LL-DASH) can use smaller CMAF chunks so delivery need not wait for a full segment. The IETF’s operational guidance discusses both approaches.

Decision WebRTC / RTP LL-HLS / LL-DASH
Best suited to Interactive communication where quick conversational feedback matters. One-to-many live delivery where lower delay than conventional segmented streaming is useful.
Delivery approach A real-time media system designed to handle communication across network paths and intermediaries. HTTP-based delivery that can use web servers and CDNs; LL-HLS retains HLS’s scalable delivery approach.
Latency expectations Actual glass-to-glass delay depends on the system and network; no universal figure is guaranteed. Apple engineer Roger Pantos described a one-to-two-second LL-HLS design target under reasonable round-trip conditions at WWDC in 2019. This is a historical design target, not a promise for every deployment.
Key trade-off Requires a real-time media system and network path engineered for the interaction required. Low-latency delivery is more sensitive to transient network conditions, and the player and delivery system must support the low-latency extensions.

These are different approaches, not a universal ranking. Select according to how much interaction viewers need, audience scale, player and platform support, and how much delay or disruption is acceptable.

Why might a live stream be behind real time?

The viewer’s delay is end-to-end, so it can accumulate across several stages: capture and encoding, network delivery, player buffering and playback. A stream can therefore be delayed even if one component appears fast. Low-latency modes reduce some waiting, but they do not remove the effects of network conditions or guarantee the same delay for every viewer.

There is a trade-off: reducing buffers can make playback more vulnerable to interruptions when network conditions fluctuate. For a large one-to-many broadcast, a little more delay may be worthwhile if it makes viewing more stable. For a session where people must answer one another, the value of faster feedback may outweigh that risk.

When should you use WebRTC instead of low-latency HLS?

  • Choose WebRTC when interaction is central. Examples include a live conversation or lesson where participants need to respond without a long wait.
  • Consider LL-HLS or LL-DASH when distributing to a large audience. They suit one-to-many live delivery when a short delay is useful but the broadcast does not depend on conversational turn-taking.
  • Check the full playback path. A low-latency protocol only helps when the delivery setup and the viewer’s player support its features.
  • Set expectations by testing the actual use case. Measure glass-to-glass delay under representative network and playback conditions; do not treat a protocol name or design target as a universal result.
