For a portrait YouTube Short, use a vertical 9:16 canvas. YouTube also accepts square video, and its current guidance does not require a specific pixel resolution. The player adapts to the video’s dimensions and may add padding around vertical video in some desktop views, so don’t bake black bars or padding into the file.
What aspect ratio should a YouTube Short use?
For a conventional portrait composition, 9:16 is the practical choice: it uses the vertical frame familiar to mobile viewers. Square video is also eligible under YouTube’s current upload guidance, so 9:16 is a recommendation for portrait presentation, not the only accepted shape. What pixel dimensions are required?
The cited YouTube Shorts upload guidance does not specify a required pixel width or height. In particular, it does not establish 1080 Ă— 1920 as a platform-mandated size. Choose a vertical or square canvas that suits your footage and editing workflow, and treat any particular pixel dimensions as an export choice rather than a Shorts eligibility rule unless YouTube publishes a requirement.
How will a Short appear on different screens?
YouTube’s player adapts to a video’s dimensions. Depending on the device and viewing context, it may add padding around a vertical video—for example, in computer browsers. YouTube recommends not adding padding or black bars directly to the video file, because the player may size the video dynamically. How long can a YouTube Short be?
Current YouTube upload instructions allow qualifying square or vertical videos up to three minutes long to be Shorts. Classification also depends on upload date: YouTube’s eligibility page gives October 15, 2024 as the relevant date for standard channels and separately gives December 8, 2025 for Official Artist Channels. Those dates are part of YouTube’s stated eligibility rules, not a pixel-dimension requirement. Because the eligibility guidance was updated effective September 24, 2026, check the current page if your channel type or an older upload is in question.
Choose the canvas for the footage

Whichever shape you choose, avoid adding black bars or padding to force the video into a different frame. YouTube’s player can adapt to the file’s dimensions, and baked-in bars become part of the image rather than flexible player space.
