Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →In OBS Studio, add a Media Source, choose your pre-roll file, and enable Loop in the source properties. For a sequence of clips, use a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. These controls repeat local media; they do not start or schedule the broadcast for you.
Loop one pre-roll video in OBS
- In the scene you want viewers to see before the program, select Sources, choose +, then select Media Source. You can create a new source or select an existing one.
- In the source properties, choose the local video file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for source details.
- Turn on Loop, then confirm the properties. The setting repeats the file after playback finishes; OBS documents its default as off.
- Preview the scene and check that the picture and audio play as intended before relying on it during a live event.
Loop a playlist of pre-roll clips
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source; with 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In the pre-roll scene, add a VLC Video source and add the files you want in its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist. OBS describes this as restarting the source after it runs out of media files. Consult the OBS Media Sources documentation for the VLC Video options.
- Preview the playlist to confirm the clips play in the desired order and that the loop continues as expected.
Loop and scene activation are different controls
Loop determines what happens when a file reaches its end. Restart playback when source becomes active determines whether playback restarts when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible. OBS documents the restart setting as on by default. Choose the behavior that suits your handoff: for example, a clip may restart when you return to its scene, while Loop keeps it repeating if the scene remains active.
Connect OBS to the live platform separately
The media loop is an OBS playback setting, not a broadcast scheduling control. For YouTube, configure the encoder with YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key, following its encoder setup instructions. Scheduling and viewer-facing stream controls are handled separately in YouTube; its live stream settings guide describes scheduled streams and trailer options, including eligibility and trailer constraints.
Do not assume a scheduled broadcast will switch from the pre-roll to the live program at the exact moment the file ends. OBS playback and platform broadcast controls are separate. Preview the pre-roll, then manage the scene change and platform controls in the workflow you are using.

Choose the source that matches your media
| Playback setup | Best fit | Repeat control | Dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One video file | Loop | Local media file |
| VLC Video | A playlist of files | Loop Playlist | VLC installed; match 64-bit VLC to 64-bit OBS |
The official OBS documentation describes these different media arrangements and repeat settings, but does not establish a universal performance or quality ranking between them.
Troubleshooting a pre-roll loop
- The video stops after one play: Open the source properties and check that Loop is enabled for a single file, or Loop Playlist for VLC Video.
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well.
- The clip starts over when you switch back to the scene: Check Restart playback when source becomes active. It controls scene activation, not whether the clip repeats at its end.
- The broadcast does not go live when the clip ends: Looping only controls local playback. Check the encoder connection, YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key, and the scene and platform controls for your broadcast.
- The pre-roll picture or sound is wrong: Preview the source and verify the selected file and its audio before the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel playing uploaded videos around the clock rather than run a local pre-roll while preparing a live program, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
