You can also upload a prepared video through YouTube Studio on a computer. A phone is enough to begin.
Choose how to make your first Short

YouTube also offers upload tips and says special equipment is not required to get started.
Record a Short in the YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app and sign in. Tap Create, then Short.
- Record your video. Hold the Capture button to record, or tap it to start and stop recording. The creation flow supports multiple segments and a duration control.
- Review your clips. Remove a previous segment or restore it if needed. Add optional sounds, text, text-to-speech, filters or effects using the tools available in the editor.
- Tap Next. Add a title, select privacy, and designate whether the video is made for kids. YouTube’s Android upload guidance sets a maximum title length of 100 characters.
- Choose Upload Short to publish, or Save draft to return to it later.

Upload a video you already made
From your phone
In the YouTube app, start the Short creation or upload flow and select a square or vertical video saved on your phone. The mobile workflow lets you trim the selected video, add available creative elements, then set its title, privacy and audience before uploading or saving a draft.

From a computer with YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and choose Create → Upload videos.
- Select your video file.
- Complete the video details, including its title, audience designation and visibility, then publish when ready.
YouTube’s computer upload instructions specify a square or vertical video up to three minutes long.
Check the format and length before uploading
For standard channels, YouTube classifies square or vertical videos up to three minutes long as Shorts when uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. The date matters if you are checking an older upload; YouTube’s eligibility guidance describes separate historical timing for Official Artist Channels, so the standard-channel date should not be assumed to cover them.

Choose music and footage you have rights to use
You can select songs available in the Shorts Audio Library. In a three-minute Short, most tracks may be used for up to 90 seconds, while some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds; check the available duration for the specific song in the app. YouTube Audio Library royalty-free music is another option.

Copyright-protected material can lead to a Content ID claim or, if a valid takedown is made, a copyright strike. YouTube’s eligibility page describes a policy transition scheduled to begin September 24, 2026 concerning active Content ID claims on Shorts longer than one minute. Check the live eligibility guidance before relying on a rule for that specific case.
Set privacy and audience deliberately
Before publishing, choose whether the Short should be public, private or unlisted, and answer YouTube’s audience question about whether it is made for kids. The default privacy setting varies by creator age: YouTube says creators aged 13–17 default to private, while creators 18 and older default to public. Do not assume the default is the setting you want; review both fields on each upload.

After you publish
A Short may appear in the Shorts feed, search, the YouTube homepage, channel pages, subscriptions or notifications. Those are possible discovery surfaces, not a promise of views. YouTube recommends trying a test Short and using privacy settings to control who can see it. For a sustainable publishing routine, choose a schedule you can maintain rather than treating any particular posting frequency as a guarantee of discovery.
Since March 31, 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view when the Short starts to play or replay, with no minimum watch-time requirement. The separate “Engaged views” metric remains available for the previous continued-watching measure. Keep that distinction in mind when interpreting analytics.
