To set up a YouTube channel, sign in to YouTube, create a channel, then use YouTube Studio’s Customization area to add its profile image, banner, name, handle, description and links. Arrange the Home tab so new visitors can find the channel’s videos, publish your changes and check how the branding looks on different screens.
1. Choose the right account and channel type
A Google Account lets you watch, like and subscribe. You need a YouTube channel to upload videos, comment or create playlists. YouTube describes a personal channel as one only its creator can manage. A channel using a business or other name can have multiple managers or owners and may be associated with a Brand Account. Choose the latter if the channel represents a documentary project, publisher or organization and needs a name or management arrangement separate from your personal Google Account. Supervised experiences may not allow channel creation. YouTube’s channel-creation instructions explain the available options.
2. Create the channel
- Sign in to YouTube with the Google Account that should own or manage the channel.
- Open the account’s channel-management settings and choose the option to create a channel.
- Enter a channel name and handle, and add a profile picture if you have one ready.
- Complete the creation flow. Menu names and locations can differ by device; follow the current YouTube Help instructions if your interface does not match.
3. Set up the profile in YouTube Studio
Open YouTube Studio and select Customization. Use Profile to edit the channel’s picture, banner, watermark, name, handle, description and site links. Use Home tab to organize the channel trailer, featured video and content sections. YouTube’s channel customization guide covers these controls.
Choose a recognizable name and handle
Use wording that makes the channel’s subject or creator easy to identify. A handle is the channel’s unique identifier; YouTube says, “A handle is a unique identifier that makes it easier for you to establish and maintain your distinct presence on YouTube.” Names and handles can each be changed twice within a 14-day period. A name change may take a few days to appear across YouTube, and changing a channel name removes its verification badge. Check YouTube’s profile instructions before making a change if either limit or badge status matters to you.

Write a concise description and add useful links
Tell first-time visitors what the channel publishes and who it is for. The profile supports translations for the channel name and description, contact information, and up to 14 links. The first link appears prominently near the Subscribe button; visitors can open the full list to see the others. Add only destinations that are useful to viewers and comply with YouTube’s external links policy. See YouTube’s profile guide for current profile controls.
4. Prepare channel artwork that survives different crops
Profile picture
Use a square or round image that remains recognizable when displayed small. YouTube’s branding instructions specify JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG, no animated GIFs, a maximum file size of 15 MB and an image that renders at 98 × 98 pixels. A simple logo or clear portrait is usually easier to recognize at small sizes than artwork with fine detail. These are platform specifications, not a guarantee of how a particular design will appear. YouTube’s branding instructions list the technical requirements.

Banner
YouTube displays the banner differently on computers, phones and TVs. Keep the channel name, logo and any essential text in the central safe area, then preview the result on more than one screen. YouTube recommends a banner of at least 2560 × 1440 pixels in its banner and profile picture tips. Its detailed branding instructions specify a 2048 × 1152-pixel minimum, a 16:9 aspect ratio, a 1235 × 338-pixel safe area for text and logos at the minimum size, and a 6 MB maximum file size. The recommended larger size and detailed minimum are different figures from two YouTube guidance pages; keeping important elements within the stated safe area helps account for cropping. YouTube also advises consistent visuals. Canva is one optional resource YouTube mentions for making banners; no particular design tool is required.
Optional video watermark
A watermark can appear throughout a video, from a custom start time, or during the last 15 seconds. YouTube specifies a square image of at least 150 × 150 pixels and under 1 MB. Watermarks are unavailable on videos set as Made for Kids; they are not clickable on mobile and do not appear in custom YouTube chromeless players or Adobe Flash. Skip this element if it does not suit the channel. See the branding instructions for its settings and restrictions.

5. Organize the Home tab for a first-time visitor
Use the Home tab to present the channel’s material in a useful order rather than leaving visitors to infer what it offers. You can set a trailer for people who have not subscribed, choose a featured video and add sections so different video formats are easier to browse. For a documentary channel, sections could separate films, episodes or subject areas if those categories reflect the videos you actually publish. These are presentation and navigation choices; YouTube’s guidance does not promise that a particular layout will increase views or subscribers. 6. Publish and review the channel
- In YouTube Studio’s Customization area, save or publish the profile and Home tab changes.
- Open the public channel page and check that the name, handle, description and links are correct.
- Review the banner on more than one device or screen size. Make sure key text and logos remain visible in the crop.
- Check that the profile image is recognizable at small size and that the Home tab makes the channel’s content easy to browse.
