How to Set Up an Audio Mixer for YouTube Live Streaming

Connect your microphone and other sources to the mixer, send the mixer’s USB audio—or a supported output through an audio interface—to your computer, then select and test that device in OBS before connecting OBS to YouTube Live. The mixer is optional: it is useful when you need hands-on control or routing for several sources, but a simple stream may not need one.

Understand the signal path

A reliable setup moves audio through each stage in order:

Microphone and other sources → mixer inputs and controls → USB audio or audio interface → computer → OBS → YouTube Live.

A mixer’s headphone output can sound correct even when its USB feed or computer routing is wrong. Check the signal at the mixer, in OBS, and in a test recording or stream preview.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What to check before connecting

  • Inputs: Confirm the mixer accepts the connection type used by each microphone or other source. Follow the manual for input power requirements, such as phantom power where applicable.
  • USB routing: Find out whether the computer receives the mixer’s stereo main mix, individual channels, or selectable channels. The exact behavior depends on the mixer and its driver.
  • Computer support: Check the manufacturer’s manual for operating-system compatibility, required drivers, and USB setup. YouTube lists mixers and multiple microphones among the equipment that may be used for an encoder-based stream (YouTube’s encoder setup guide).
  • Connection path: Use the mixer’s USB audio connection if it provides the channels and routing you need. Otherwise, send a supported mixer output to an audio interface connected to the computer.

If you are choosing equipment, match input types and counts to your sources, check how USB audio is routed, and confirm driver and OBS compatibility for the exact model and generation. Look for direct headphone monitoring and physical controls if those matter to your workflow. An interface can be a simpler alternative when you need a computer input but not mixer-style controls; Focusrite’s OBS guide illustrates that interface-to-software path.

Connect the mixer and configure OBS

  1. Connect and set up your sources. Plug each microphone or other source into a compatible mixer input. Power the mixer as directed by its manual, install any required driver, and connect it to the computer over USB or through the audio interface.
  2. Confirm the computer recognizes the device. Check the operating system’s audio-device list and the mixer’s driver or routing utility, if it has one. Select the actual device and intended channels in OBS rather than assuming the mixer’s local monitor is what the computer receives.
  3. Add the mixer feed in OBS. In a scene, add an Audio Input Capture source and choose the mixer or interface. Alternatively, use a device configured under Settings → Audio. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends selecting devices manually in Settings → Audio if the expected meters do not move or the wrong device is captured.
  4. Prevent duplicate capture. Do not capture the same feed through both a global Mic/Aux device and a separately added Audio Input Capture source unless you deliberately want both paths. Duplicate capture can create a louder or doubled signal; verify the route with a short recording.
  5. Check the meter. Speak into the microphone or play a source and confirm the intended OBS meter responds. If it does not, check device selection, channel routing, mute buttons, power, and drivers before adjusting levels.

For the mixer-to-OBS setup described by OBS, start with levels at the device: adjust each source’s gain, balance sources with their channel controls, then set the master output feeding the computer. Make final software adjustments only after the hardware signal is clean. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.

Set levels, channels, and monitoring

Set gain without clipping

Test at the loudest level you expect during the stream. Raise each source’s gain enough for a clear signal, balance the sources on the mixer, and set its master output. Then watch OBS’s meters and peak history. Red indicates a level close to clipping; digital full scale is 0 dBFS, and audio sent at or above that ceiling can distort. Reduce the source gain or mixer output rather than trying to repair an overloaded signal by turning it down later in OBS. OBS explains this in its mixer guide and audio technical details.

There is no single speech-meter target that suits every microphone, mixer, and show. Leave headroom for louder moments and avoid red or overload indications.

Check mono and stereo routing

A single microphone is usually a mono source. Make sure it is centered or downmixed so the voice reaches both left and right channels; otherwise, viewers may hear it in only one ear. OBS’s output defaults to stereo, and its mixer guide describes how a mono source can end up on one side if channel assignment is wrong. Interface controls vary; for example, Focusrite’s guide covers selecting mono input behavior.

Monitor both stages

First listen through the mixer or interface’s headphone output. Then listen to the audio reaching OBS using its audio-monitoring path. Choose the intended monitoring device and use headphones rather than speakers near the microphone to reduce feedback risk. Monitoring the local mixer alone does not prove that OBS is receiving the right signal. OBS recommends listening early at the device and again when audio reaches the software (Audio Mixer Guide).

Test timing and rehearse the complete show

Compare the voice with game, desktop, music, or guest audio at the levels you will actually use. If sound and picture are out of sync, use the encoder’s audio sync-offset control and test again: the correct offset depends on how the specific computer processes audio and video (Focusrite’s OBS setup guide).

  1. Record a rehearsal in OBS or make an unlisted/private test stream.
  2. Use the planned microphones, other sources, speaking distance, and normal activity.
  3. Listen back on headphones or another device. Check left and right channels, clipping, noise, source balance, and audio/video sync.
  4. Correct the hardware routing or levels that caused a problem, then record another test.

OBS advises recording a normal session and listening back before going live. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the event (OBS Audio Mixer Guide; YouTube encoder settings).

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and configure the stream for encoder software.
  2. Copy the stream key into OBS’s stream settings using YouTube’s encoder instructions. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it on-screen.
  3. Start the encoder and check the YouTube preview for picture and sound before going live. Confirm the intended audio is reaching the stream, not just a local monitor.

Use YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the Live Control Room workflow. Stream keys should remain private.

Choose YouTube’s encoder audio settings

These are settings for the encoded stream—not mixer gain controls. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 kbps for stereo audio. For 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC-only support, and it recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Check the current YouTube encoder settings page and your encoder’s available options before streaming; platform guidance can change.

Troubleshoot common audio problems

  • The OBS meter does not move: Confirm the mixer is powered, the right device and channels are selected, the USB driver is available, and the source is not muted. Check mixer routing and test one source at a time. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and the mixer or interface manual.
  • The meter moves but the stream is silent: Confirm the source is routed to the output or track used by the stream, not only to a local monitor. Make a short recording, check OBS’s stream audio selection, and listen to YouTube’s preview (OBS Audio Mixer Guide; YouTube encoder setup).
  • Voice is only in one ear: Check the input’s mono/stereo assignment and center or downmix the mono source as appropriate (OBS Audio Mixer Guide).
  • Audio distorts: Reduce gain at the source or mixer master and keep digital peaks below 0 dBFS. Check for red or overload indications before changing OBS output levels (OBS technical details).
  • Voice echoes or sounds doubled: Check whether OBS is capturing the same mixer feed twice. Also check whether software monitoring is being returned to the mixer while the source is already audible acoustically. Test with one capture and monitoring path at a time.
  • Audio is early or late: Check a test recording first, then adjust the sync offset in small steps. The required value depends on the setup; do not assume an offset from another computer will work (Focusrite’s OBS guide).
  • Monitoring is silent or feeds back: Verify the selected monitoring device and hardware route. Use headphones and avoid sending monitored audio to speakers near the microphone (OBS Audio Mixer Guide).

  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
