You can broadcast a playlist of local video files from an old laptop by using OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, then connecting OBS to a YouTube Live stream. First check that your channel is eligible and the laptop can handle a test; start with modest output settings and adjust based on stream health. The setup procedure is not India-specific, but check live access on your own channel. Use only videos you are authorized to stream.
How do I set up a YouTube Live video playlist on an old laptop?
There are two different things people mean by a “YouTube playlist.” A YouTube playlist is a watchlist of videos on the site. To broadcast local files as one live program, make a playlist inside OBS and send its output to YouTube with an encoder.
1. Check YouTube Live access before preparing the stream
In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live. YouTube’s stated eligibility requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and being at least 16 years old. For a first live stream, activation can take up to 24 hours, so check access well before your planned start. Eligibility and access are account-specific; opening Live Control Room is the practical way to confirm yours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
2. Check the laptop and run a test
Identify the laptop’s operating system and graphics hardware before building the stream. OBS currently lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements. Those are basic requirements, not a promise that a particular laptop can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate smoothly. CPU load also depends on the encoder and scene complexity. 3. Create the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as well.
- Open OBS and select or create the scene that will carry the video.
- In the Sources box, add a VLC Video source.
- In the source properties, add the local video files in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart after its last file. If you only need to repeat one file, use OBS’s Media Source and its separate Loop option instead.
- Check the preview and audio levels. Test the complete playlist behavior, including what happens between files, before broadcasting.
The VLC Video source supports multiple media files as a playlist; VLC must be installed for the source to be available. OBS distinguishes it from Media Source, which is intended for an individual media file. See OBS Media Sources documentation.
4. Choose a stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live. Start an immediate stream or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling creates an upcoming watch page you can share in advance.
- In OBS, select YouTube as the service if it is available in your connection settings. Otherwise, enter YouTube’s stream URL as the server and paste the stream key into the encoder settings.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not show or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room and check the picture and sound. For a scheduled stream, click Go Live in Live Control Room when you are ready to begin.

What settings and upload speed should I use?
For an older computer or uncertain connection, begin with a conservative resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s published reference video bitrates include:

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a given laptop or connection will sustain the stream. Run an upload speed test and leave about 20% headroom beyond the total outgoing bitrate. The total includes audio as well as video; do not plan to use all the measured upload capacity for the video bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend headroom, while its encoder settings and bitrate table provides the resolution figures above.

Test representative material, including the most demanding motion and loudest audio in your playlist. Watch OBS for encoder overload and YouTube Live Control Room for stream health. If frames drop or the encoder struggles, lower resolution or frame rate and simplify the scene, then test again.
How do I loop videos on YouTube Live?
For a list of different local videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. For a single video that should repeat, use Media Source with Loop enabled. A YouTube watchlist does not itself turn recorded videos into a live broadcast: OBS is the part that plays the local files and sends the encoded output to YouTube.

Copyright, archives, and ending the stream
Only stream videos and audio you have permission to rebroadcast. The setup steps do not determine whether a particular recording, music track, documentary, or clip is licensed for live use; check the rights for every item in the playlist.
When finished, end the broadcast in Live Control Room and stop sending from OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; check your channel’s Live tab to verify the saved stream. Longer streams are not covered by that automatic-archive statement, so do not rely on an archive for them. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Troubleshooting an old-laptop stream
- VLC Video is missing from OBS: install VLC, restart or check OBS, and match the architecture. A 64-bit OBS build needs 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after the final video: open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Video stutters, frames drop, or OBS reports encoder overload: reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and test again with representative files. Check upload capacity and retain the recommended headroom; a lower video bitrate alone will not fix a laptop that cannot encode smoothly.
- YouTube does not show an incoming feed: confirm OBS is sending to the correct YouTube service or stream URL and that the current stream key is entered correctly. Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview before trying to start the broadcast.
- Live streaming is unavailable: check channel verification and restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
