For a quick highlight, make a YouTube Clip and share its link. If you need a standalone post on another social platform, download your own recording from YouTube Studio, edit a copy for that destination, and upload it there. The choice depends on whether viewers can stay on YouTube or need a separate video post.
Choose between a YouTube Clip and a separate upload
| Option | Best for | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Clip and link | A short highlight when it is fine for viewers to watch on YouTube. | A Clip is 5–60 seconds and remains associated with its source video. Viewers must be able to access and watch that original video. |
| Download and upload a separate file | A native post on another service, or an excerpt that needs editing or reframing. | YouTube Studio’s download feature is for your own uploaded videos; its help guidance gives 720p or 360p depending on video size. The destination’s requirements vary. |
A Clip is not a standalone file you can upload everywhere. If the source recording is private or deleted, the Clip may no longer be available. For a separate post, work from a downloaded copy and check the destination platform’s current upload guidance before publishing.
Share a highlight as a YouTube Clip
- Open the eligible YouTube recording. For a livestream, wait until the stream has ended and YouTube has uploaded it as a video.
- Select Clip, give the excerpt a title, and choose a section between 5 and 60 seconds.
- Select Share clip. Copy the link, or use a supported sharing destination offered in the interface, such as Facebook or X.
- When sharing the link, make sure the source video’s visibility and access settings will let the intended viewers watch it.
Clips are useful when a short moment is enough and viewers can remain on YouTube. Clipping is not available for streams without DVR or for a point beyond the DVR timeframe.
Download your recording and upload a separate post
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Select the video you uploaded, open its menu, and choose Download.
- Check the downloaded file before editing. YouTube’s help guidance says this download is an MP4 at 720p or 360p depending on the video’s size.
- Make a copy for editing. Trim the section you want and adapt the framing, captions, or other elements to the destination’s current specifications.
- Upload the edited file using the destination platform’s own publishing flow. Check its current rules for video format, duration, size, aspect ratio, and rights before posting; requirements differ and can change.
YouTube points creators to Google Takeout as an option for downloading all of their uploaded videos. You cannot use the Studio download feature to download someone else’s video. If Studio does not offer Download, YouTube lists possible restrictions: the video may have been removed, may have a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, may use a pre-approved audio track, or may already have been downloaded five times in the last 24 hours.

Keep a backup before relying on a livestream replay
YouTube says livestreams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup and advises creators to verify local archive files. If the recording matters, keep the original capture and confirm that it plays before treating the YouTube replay as your only copy. An external drive is one optional way to keep a local copy; YouTube does not require a particular device.
Check rights and access before publishing
- Use recordings and music you have the rights to share on the destination service. A video being available on YouTube does not by itself establish permission to repost it elsewhere.
- For a Clip, consider whether the original video will remain accessible to the people receiving the link.
- For a separate upload, check the destination’s current copyright and publishing rules as well as its technical requirements.
- Keep an untouched backup so edits for one platform do not replace your source recording.
Troubleshoot common problems
The Clip option is missing
Check whether the recording is an eligible video and, for a livestream, whether it has ended and uploaded. Clipping is unavailable for streams without DVR and for content outside the DVR timeframe.

People cannot watch a shared Clip
They need access to the Clip and permission to watch its original video. Check the source video’s visibility and whether it is still available; a private or deleted source can make the Clip unavailable.
You cannot download the video in Studio
Confirm that you are downloading a video you uploaded. Then check the restrictions YouTube lists: removal, a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, a pre-approved audio track, or five downloads of that video in the past 24 hours can prevent another download.

The separate upload is rejected or looks wrong
Recheck the destination’s current upload instructions and export settings. There is no single aspect ratio, duration, or upload limit that applies to every social service.
